upper thigh muscle cramps

Last night at 11:00 I got really severe muscle cramps in both my upper thighs. They came and went for over an hour. I was totally in the worst pain ever. My husband tried to help me take a warm bath besides drinking 2 bottles of water The pain would come approx. every 5 seconds It went up into my vagina area and then would stop only to start again. My husband took me to the emergency room. They started an IV giving me valium and electrolytes with potassium. My muscle cramps were getting worse. After 5 hours of them I just wanted to die. The doctor finally came back in and they gave me morphine. The muscle spasms stopped right after. They sent me home with a prescription for muscle relaxants. I hadn't done anything strenuous and I drink plenty of water. It was the worst experience I've ever had. What could have caused this and what can I do to prevent it from happening again?

Hello Roberta.  Thanks for your question - it caused many enlightening responses.  I too have suffered with these sickening thigh muscle cramps for about 2 years now.  For a numer of years I've had the cramping/pain in the calves and feet.   My doctor told me to hydrate as much as possible, which helps somewhat, at times.  When i had the first attack in the thighs, I cried in pain.  I also had cold sweats.  Aftewards my body trembled.  It took several hours for everything to calm down.  The pain in the calves was never as unbearable as those in the thighs shooting up to the pelvis.  When the second one occurred, I had my husband bring several bottles of water to me alon with 2 Tylenol extra strength pills.  It helped but only after what seemed like a hour of excruciating pain.  My thought is these thigh spasms could be related to stenosis, which is currently developing in my spine.  I will consult with my Rheumatologist.   I have read the various suggestions and will also try these.  Thanks again for opening up this discussion.  May God keep all of us painfree !

I have had the severe upper thigh cramps for 4 years.   Nearly always at night - intense, painful, and restricts movement completely.    In this discussion group about 2 years ago - after multi questions for visited doctors - I came across somebody who said:   MAGNESIUM !    so each evening I take a 150mg tablet.   It's been very successful, thank heavens.  The first time it appeared, it felt like a giant object was around my whole thigh and hip area (had I not known where my heart was smile I would have thought it was a full blown heart attack  starting in my thighs.   Absolutely screaming awful !!!  Hubby was frantic, as he, also, had never witnessed such a thing before.   It is terrifying and total.   If you haven't had it - you won't understand any of it either.

I bought some mini Magnesium for during the night, and if I get a whiff of anything, I down about 2-3 or them, and that appears to help keep it at bay.   However, dare I say that in the last week, a few heavier ones have given me a "wake up" shock, but taking the little tablets keeps it under control ... and so I'm revamping my attempts to not revert to the major horror of one charging into the midst of my sleep.   I do sleep soundly, and probably some of the medical data is good re legs being relaxed and  pulled up slightlly ... but, hells bells, once it's upon you .... you are off into an unknown world.    And yes, I wouldn't be at all surprised to find (I don't know how) that the shock would be enough to bowl you over and out.

Roberta: I am glad the magnesium works for You. I have used Calcium Magnesium Tablets for years and usually only take 1 tablet every couple of weeks unless I have been doing some strenuouswork using my legs.

i read that a well known football coach has his players drink pickle juice regularly to prevent leg cramps so that is another possible remedy1

Thanks for the feedback. The more people that know about how to handle these horrific cramps the better

Hello, I too have these severe muscle spasms in my calves and sometimes my thighs too I don't know which is worst , but they're awful, I just want to kill myself When I get them I even start sweating sometimes too like I'm gonna pass out, I use a massager to help it and my son applies pressure to the area with his hands while using the massager , and I also use this stuff called stop pain it's a Rollon and its like bengay, but not as strong, I'm going to try the magnesium pills to see if it helps

I recently experienced severe spasm in my upper legs, specifically quadriceps and inner thigh muscles.  Both legs were involved. This attack followed a day of strenuous physically activity involving pulling and dragging tree limbs for land clearing.  It occurred a few hours after I had showered, eaten, and rested in my chair.  My response was to rush to the commode and bear down and push to get movement in my colon.  Although I wasn't able to force elimination, any movement in my colon seemed to reduce the intensity of the spasms, and they slowly abated with repeated effort. I do suffer from low gut motility as I take tylenol with codeine #3 for lower back pain and muscle weakness in my legs. Therefore, I take metamucil and colace to increase it.  But I am at a loss to understand why constipation would cause muscle spasm and extreme pain in my upper legs.  For now, I am going to occasionally take senna to stimulate my colon further.  One person did mention spinal stenosis, and nerve compression could be the culprit due to the physical activity that day.  I welcome any comments and hope this is helpful.

Hi Roberta! I am awake at 4 in the morning with no sleep. I have had the terrible upper inner thigh cramps now off and on for almost two years! I must say that the pain is worse than all my pain from many surgeries. During the night I started getting a bad one and could not even get out of bed! It was scary and the feeling of helplessness is bad also. I do take magnesium everyday and still get them. At least it is not an everyday occurrence so Incan be thankful for that. Mine can come day time or night. Makes no difference. I feel your pain!
