Upsetting toxic smell from me! Help!

Posted , 23 users are following.

Hi. I am just joined this group in desperation to find some genuine answers to relieve the symptoms of Atrophic Vaginitus. Im 53 was diagosed with this a year ago, 2 years after my period stopped. The vagifem pessaries prescribed make me really sore so I have stopped using them. I am using nothing at the moment but very sore and very depressed. I seem to be producing an almost toxic smell from down there a bit like amonia, it can be smelt with my clothes on, I work in a busy office and I see peoples faces often grimace or start coughing when around me.  I go home and cry often, please can anyone else let me know if they suffer from this and what actually helps. Any suggestions would be really welcome. Thanks.

I was horrified when I finally realized there was "that" odor. Dirty looks and disgust from people finally made me figure it out. My husband could not smell anything. I tried water douches which were supposed to be safe even daily, one Dr. scripted vaginal hormone cream. That, at least for me was the worst thing possible. That exacerbated the odor.  What finally worked (Note: I am 62 post menopausal).  A good mild soap for bathing like Kirks Castile, Baby soap etc. Don't use douche as even just water can thrown off your ph balance and make it worse. I use a vaginal otc gel every 3 days. It is perfectly safe (ran that by Gyn.)and keeps moisturized thus less infection.  The frustrating thing for me was why didn't any of the doctors suggest this?!  Most Gyn will  automatically treat with infection and if PH is off (whether because of menopause etc)your problem will be right back.  I have seen postings from high school girls who were being taunted because they smelled. They go to the Dr and no infection is noted and no smell at that time so they are just told all is ok.  All is not ok when you are dealing with an embarassing foul odor which some people think you have poor hygiene .  I also changed diet to avoid dairy, soy, gluten, caffeine and cut way back on sugar.  Note that I also take a product (oral otc med) called Nullo which is an internal deodorant.  It is a chlorophyllin copper product, and also take magnesium oxide.  I'm also considering going back on HRT .  Good luck. Thankful we have these boards as I have learned far more on certain medical conditions from these as compared to some of the Doctors.  While the doctors are great, several have told me they will not recommend otc meds or dietary supplemets because they deal only with meds that have been clinically tested and proven.

Hi everybody I happened across this group discussion up late tonite stressing over these same issues and am very thankful that I am not alone. I have just in the last few years started experiencing these same symptoms....I had a hyst.in 06 and lost ovaries in 2010 and 2011 and boy was I in for a rude awakening....I aged 10 yrs in 1 my lady parts dried up and my body has fallen apart lol!! I have handled most things but the vaginal issues have become a crippling depressing and isolating problem....I have read every article I could possibly find and I have found a few solutions that have kept things at bay for me...never gone but tolerable....I have lupus and diabetes so those r double whammys against me as well....I have tried everything possible but what worked best for me was the old remedy of boric acid capsules...you can make your own with supplies sold on eBay or u can have a pharmacy compound them which is a better alternative, if you check around and find one that will do. They DO work I promise and are less invasive and very inexpensive vs the oral meds or messy creams. It is a powder in a gelatin capsule and I use overnite as I would a yeast med and just use pads to catch the drainage which isn't much when you first wake up. They can be used several days in a row until prob clears then maybe weekly and etc. Your gyn can guide you on the best way for u to administer. I know a lot of you don't like hrt but after trying premarin cream for the first time in last two weeks it has poss eliminated my problem.... I am in utter amazement and hope it continues to work, the gyn is right the absence of hormones does effect pH level and if you can work with the hormone cream and or boric acid capsules you will find it is s great combo to rid the dreaded odor, bv and yeast. I had thought I was stuck like this for the rest of my life and I was determined to keep trying and reading till I found a solution. I surely hope this may help yall as well for I searched wayyy too long bf I found this miracle. Please keep me posted for anyone who tries and thank you all for the great ideas, if we as females (with this... widespread...very serious....aggravating...overlooked..very real health struggle) don't push for a possible cure we will never get it the attention it deserves....good luck to u all and never give up 😊

Hi Bee how awful for you it is bad enough smelling it yourself without someone else making you feel worse.  I was having this problem before I started with other severe VA symptoms and kept thinking it was urine smell - well I think it was some of this but also a combination.

Mine has gone completely since taking Vagifem.  I take it twice a week on day 4 and day 3 but if I try leaving a longer time then the smell comes back very quick.

I have recently started to use a vaginal wash that Yes company sell - it is a foam that supposedly is rose fragranced but personally I cannot smell it at all.  Quite expensive but it lasts a long time.  Not sure if that would help you it is specific for vaginal use.

I worry a little about the whole Vagifem scenario but could not bear to go back to the dreadful pain and symptoms.

Just want to post this to help anyone whose been struggling with abnormal discharge/itching and irritation...been struggling with symptoms for over a year and recently bought RePhresh Gel(purple box) at Walmart and it worked like MAGIC! Made all symptoms go away within a day and kept them away. Also started taking a vitamin b-complex with folic acid which has helped a lot. Good luck ladies hopes this helps

Not heard of this so had a look at their website.  It seems to be targeting young women rather than post menopausal women with VA.  Same with folic acid isnt that for women who want or are pregnant>

I haven't bothered to read all of the other answers, but after just a few, it's kind of frustrating seeing "It's probably BV" over and over. BV is just what people and doctors say when they don't know what it is. Fortunately for you, I think I do. Lol... that rhymed. There's a very good chance your gut is infected with h. pylori (heliobacter pylori). Many people are and don't know it. One of the symptoms is the smell of ammonia in sweat. Go ahead, Google it. Get to the doctor, get tested for h. pylori, and if you are infected, it's treatable with antibiotics.

This is my story, i hope i can help a lot of woman with the similar problem. 9 months ago I donated my eggs, if only I had known then what the consequences would be… I had to inject myself with hormones during 10 days.  My body responded very well to the hormonal treatment and produced a lot of eggs. The eggs were taken away from my body and that was that.

About 10 days after the procedure I started noticing this HORRIBLE smell coming from between my legs. I have had bacterial vaginosis (gardnerella) before but this was definitely NOT the same smell. It smelled like ammonia or something very chemical.  Sometimes I thought the smell was even similar to cat pee! I could smell it through my pants and it would stain my underwear.

I went to my obgyn, ofcourse she gave me medication for bv, that obviously did not work. Long story short,  I went to 3 different gynaecologists and 2 other doctors, nobody could help me. I even went back to the fertility specialist who did my donation, he prescribed me a very high dose of antibioticum wich ofcourse didn’t help. I had swap after swap, smear after smear, they found NOTHING, I was completely “healty”.  I also had loads of disgusting thick, white discharge (in the beginning it was very watery).

6 months after the horrible smell started I got really desperate and contacted a doctor that specialized in vaginal infection (because I still thought that it would be something of that kind).  I never met such an understanding doctor in my life. Finally somebody that really listened to me and that didn’t just sent me home with a comment like “oh,nothings wrong, come back next year” or “girl, I think it’s all in your head”!! What he found was cervical ectropion or cervical erosion. A change in the cells of the cervix that causes watery or thick white discharge, bleeding after intercourse and in between periods, however he could  not explain the smell. He said that with a simple procedure called “ cauterization” he could probably fix my problem. I had the procedure done 4 weeks ago and had a checkup 3 days ago, the wound is healing nicely, I developed a small infection but this is taken care of and to this day I haven’t smelled a thing…

The doctor could not explain the smell, I didn’t have an infection, he put my smear under the microscope immediately and could indeed confirm that there was no infection present. But I am 100% sure that the smell was a symptom of the erosion. He told me that erosion develops when there is a change in hormones (mainly estrogen).  In my case it was caused by the hormonal stimulation I had been given for the donation. He put me on a minipill, (a progesterone only pill) to keep my estrogen levels as low as possible.

I read topics on fora from pregnant woman, girls in puberty, woman who have had a mirena placed or girls/woman who have been taking birthcontrolpills (combinationpills, both estrogen and progesterone)  for a long time, all have the same symptoms but no explanation from any doctor.  In all of these cases there is a high change in hormones, either sudden or for over a longer period of time. Especially in pregnant woman, cervical erosion is common.

Go to your doctor, demand that they examine you and check for erosion, sometimes, because it can only be a small area, it is harder to see. Do not settle for no, demand answers.

I hope I can help some woman with my story, it has been a long and frustrating road for me and I hope that this is the end of it. Excuse me if I made some language related mistakes.

My friends, I know what it is. For whatever reason, you and I and many other women are getting a reaction from all things associated with chicken and cow. Not only the meat, but milk, cheese, all things dairy, and eggs. (All the fabulous stuff). :-(

Go off of these products for a bit, and I PROMISE you the smell will go away. This is what's causing it. Fish is okay, though.

When I eliminated these products, the smell and the burning went away. I don't know why we're affected, but we are.

I have had the same problem.  I started using Chiro Klenz tea I get from my chiropractor.  Then I started the 17 day diet book/plan.  I am drinking 4-6 glasses of green tea a day along with a lot of water and following the diet plan.  I started both a week ago and my smell is gone.  I am so thrilled!

Reduce your sugar intake to no more than 42 grams a day. That innocent glass of fruit juice in the morning is a BIG trigger. Your body is reacting to too much sugar ...
