I joined this forum on behalf of my wife as she is not able to understand after stroke. I would like to knowif any female patient has experienced incontinence from using this medication. She has been on 1500 mg a day for approx one month and suddenly is having OCCASIONALY incontinence. If so I would like to remove this medication by tapering off.

I believe a study was done and 0.2% of people taking gabapentin had urinary incontinence. Females around the age of 55-60 were most prone.

Hi Just did an internet search and found a reliable reference. Tried topost it but for some reason it has gone for moderation yet it is a link to the Journal Of Neurology and side effects of Gabapentin!!

I suggest you do an internet search or two for unusual gabapentin side effects since I experienced odd and serious side effects whilst using it and could not get off the stuff soon enough.

two instances of incontinence while standing. Never a problem until the Gabapenten was prescribed. Now taking 1500 mg per day. She is post stroke 13 yrs.  From what I have read this medication can very damaging, especially when trying to weane off it. Even though it works, it's not worth the complications that come with it. I read many forums

It caused lumps on my gum which had to be surgicaly removed and caused me to cough blood from the lungs (still continuing). The stuff is effective in its off label uses but these uncommon side effects are horrific.

      hi

That  is terrible. With reference to the coughing up of blood was this an embolism?

How long ago  was it since you were put on this drug? When did the coughing up of blood start? what tests have been done ? Did you report this to the MHRA?

I was coughing up blood as well when I was on it.

I truly dont know the precise causes of my problems which were difficult for me to pin on to Gabapentin (liquid form). I was taking only a small/moderate dose 3 times/day but doctors assured me that this was the cause, I made no further reports of these known problems and was just happy to get off the stuff about 4 months after starting its use 3/4 yrs ago but have found there is an ongoing legacy of its use through the return of the haemoptysis which may now be being caused by disease associated with the original side effect.

I have been on 1500mg of Gabapentine a day for almost 3 months now and have not had any problems. I hope you can figure out what is causing the lose of bladder for your wife. Good luck.

Hello Kevin I am 55 and I have been taking 3 300mg 3 times a day for  about 8 years for back pain (between you and me I don't think it works much). I do not suffer from any incontinence issues. I would go back to Gp ask what could be causing it.

     Good luck

I have NEVER experienced incontinence until I started taking Gabapentin. Now it has become a regular thing and I have to wear pads every night. I hate this side effect. It is embarrassing and demoralizing to have to worry about having to occasionally wake in the middle of the night to shower and change my pajamas. It makes me feel so old. I will be talking to my doctor about an alternative medicine as it also causing ringing in the ears. Just for informational reasons I am being prescribed this med for nightmares and panic attacks, not pain.

Hi Kevin I have been on Gabapentin for a year slowly increased the dosage. In the past 4 months I have awoken to my bottom pants wet & my bed soaked. I take this medication for anxiety. It freaks me out to wake up from a deep sleep not knowing I needed to urinate. I'm 62 & have suffered for many years with a weak bladder & need to wear a pad during the day for uncontrollable leakage. I was wondering if Gabapentin was causing this embarrassing situation? Anyone else have an issue from this medicine or is it time to see urologist

I have been on gabapentin for neuropathic pain for nearly 5 years  I am 35 year old female and have had urinary incontinence during the night , at the beginning it was more of a odd occasion but now is becoming more and more frequent occurrence which is so upsetting and embarrassing , I thought it might be urinary tract infection, I have been given antibiotics for have been checked for a prolapse and now I have just found this discussion and everyone who has experienced incontinence during the night has reported exactly the same things that I am going through, not waking up in time or if I am lucky enough to do not being able to make it to the toilet in time,  have decided to try and come off the gabapentin with the hope that this may help, I'm sorry that your wife is having similar problems I hope she gets better soon
