Urolift cost

Hey all,

I'm 32 years old and have been diagnosed with BPH. I'm currently on Cialis to help with the symptoms.  I've been on it for almost a week and haven't noticed a huge change in symptoms, except last night I was able to sleep through the night.

I had been taking benedryl to help me sleep at night for about 2 years, but found out that this was aggrevating the problem. I was also on Paxil for about 5 years and was told that this could have contributed as well.

I was told that I was a good candidate for Urolift but my insurance doesn't cover it.  My urologist's office told me that they would charge about $500 for his fee, but we would need to do it at a surgical center (I haven't contacted them for an estimate yet).  I then found a urologist that does it in house and asked how much it would cost for him to do it.  His office told me that it would be between $4-7k based on how many implants I would need.

I read on here that some folks were able to get estimates as low as $2500.  Should I branch out and try to find someone that will do it that cheaply or is the $4-7k number pretty standard?

Thanks in advance.

I know that cost is always a consideration, but like all surgery, this can be botched up. Be sure to check that the doctor who does it has done a lot of them, has had many successful ones, and has a very low complication rate, and the Surgical Center has a low infection rate. You need more than cheap.

Daniel.  BPH not unusual. In was diagnosed after having a high PSA in the mid-40's.(My highest PSA was almost 30) My urologist prescribed Avodart and it was the only medication that helped me. Note that all of these prostate related medications do not work quickly, and it may take up to a month before you notice any actual relief.  For sleep, ask your physician for something like Ambien, which won't aggrevate the symptoms. Last week I finally went and had a TERP as my prostate was the size of your fist. Allow the Cialis or the Avodart more time to kick in.

    Hope this helps you out.

Thanks for the advice. I was on Flomax for over a month and didn't see any improvement.  However, the Cialis has removed the 'urgency,' which has been nice.

I tried Flomax as well. Did not work for me either. May have well been taking a PEZ. I was on Avodart for about 2 years which helped me. I did try Cialis as well, and while the side effects kept the wife happy, Avodart was my best bet. I do know that it took about a month before I finally went "I think this is working". Truth is, none of these meds take away all the symptoms. If your BPH is simply due to an enlarged prostate and not an infection, at some point you'll probably need to have some sort of surgery to fix it. Eight years ago, I had a surgeon/urologist convince me to try a "green laser" surgical prostate treatment which, for me, was a mistake. It simply didn't work, and I was back to square one. I finally sucked it up and had the TERP. It's only been a week, so we'll see. Urine flow is dramatically better, and pain while urination is getting better (slowwwly).

Hi Folks, My urologist has advised that I am good candidate for a Urolift procedure. I have been suffering from BPH for the last 3 years and on the usual meds (Flomax, Cialis, Finesteride). The doc says that the procedure may or may not work since my prostate is about 35 gms and the problem is my bladder which does not contract enough to push everything out. I pee when the bladder is around the 600-700 ml mark and pee around 200 and leave the rest behind. This is the result from a urodynamic study done yesterday.

So the doc thinks that Urolift may or may not improve things. But it certainly cannot do any harm. I am thinking that if I continue with my 4-5x CIC per day, I could (hopefully) regain some of my bladder contractions back. I am 59 years old and dont want to get stuck with stents which will be useless in the body. Any advise? Is there anyone on the forum who went thru the same dilemma? Thanks.
