Urolift Experiences

Greetings All, I am starting this discussion as a means of informing other men out there what they can expect from this relatively new procedure. I would ask that your experiences and comments be in reference to Urolift only.

I am scheduled to have this procedure two days from now.  My urologist says I am the perfect candidate. I am 65 years old with an enlarged prostate. I don't smoke or drink. I exercise regularly, including a 2-mile run three times a week. My primary symptoms are bladder retention (250 - 500cc) and a weak stream. I get up to urinate once each night and go maybe six times during the day.  I have been on meds for 8 years--Fanasteride (Proscar - stopped 4 years ago) and Doxazosin (Flomax - still taking.) No erectile disfunction. My expectations of this procedure are that my symptoms will remain the same and that I will be able to stop the Doxazosin. Beyond this, my hope is that my symptoms will actually improve. I will provide updates as I go through the process.

If you have experienced Urolift, please  join me in providing helpful information to others who are considering this procedure.

Week 5 - No significant change. I continue to be very pleased with the outcome. Had my first follow-up appointment with the Doc. He seemed pleased with the results. I have been cleared to resume intercourse, but he wants me to wait one more week before resuming serious physical exercise (running, situps, pushups, weight lifting, etc.) My next update will be at 8 weeks (3 weeks from now.)

As someone who is seriously thinking about having this procedure done I just want you to know how much I appreciate you taking the time to do these updates. They are very helpful for me. Thanks so much and continued good health to you.

Week 8 - I continue to be very pleased with the outcome of this procedure. Drove 1,300 miles to visit family without any issues. This type of thing usually causes a few days of urine flow problems, but not in this case--either on the outbound or return trip. I have resumed a full exercise regimen, including sit-ups, push-ups, weight lifting and brisk walking. I will soon return to running. I have received the go-ahead to stop taking Doxizosin (Cardura 4mg). I will back off over the next week or two, though the Doc says I can go cold turkey if I wish. I will post again in two weeks with the results.

Bill glad to hear it.  I had mine done in April had no problem went off all pills.  As you know there are some procedures that they have that does not work for all men.  We just have to take one day at a time. Ken

At the urging of my honey I thought I'd share my experience of having the Urolift procedure with the hope that others my benefit.

The procedure was performed at the Doc's office. I took some Valium before to take the edge off, (not nearly enough).  First thing Doc did was to insert a catheter with some numbing agents, (no where near enough...see a theme here).

After some time, he commenced inserting the Urolift, ended up w six implants total. When he says this might hurt a little, realize he is absolutely clueless, unless of course he has also had the procedure. I felt a strong pinch, followed by something being pulled. The anticipation of the next implant was almost as bad as the actual process.

Before you you leave they want you to urinate; oh my gosh, talk about painful. Expect to only pee blood. Evidently, if you are unable to pee they will need to insert another catheter, thus high motivation to expel.

For me, I had a strong urge to pee all the way home. Unfortunately, this urge produced very little discharge.

Since getting home last night, I have been on the toilet consistently every 60-90 minutes. Each attempt to urinate starts with pain. Once I relax, I have been rewarded with dribble, and then the process repeats; pain, dribble and so on.

The blood in my urine is dissipating, but I still am able to empty my bladder, (this is 20 hours after the procedure).

Bottom line for anyone considering this procedure; expect pain and discomfort, and don't plan on going to work the next day.  And most valuable advice form my experience; ask for sedation.

Sorry to hear that you had such a difficult and painful experience. As I mentioned earlier, I only had two implants, with full sedation and a catheter for a few days. Never experienced any pain with the implants. The catheter was painful, though it protected me from urination pain. Once it was removed, urine flow was excellent and continues to be so. I am most impressed with the outcome and would recommend this procedure to anyone who meets the requirements. I sincerely hope your symptoms improve, and that, in the end, you will be happy with the results.

I had mine done in April of last year.  Was out....I had a catheter put in for 2 days.  I have a problem peeing on demand.  After it came out had no trouble peeing it did burn for 24 hour but all was fine.  Having the catheter is up to the dr and you.  Best thing to do is the catheter.  You don't have to worry to pee it just goes in the bag   Ken

Kenneth1955, I actually ended up putting the catheter in myself yesterday afternoon; pain just got to be too much. Never in a million years would I have guessed I could do such a thing, but the relief that came from an empty bladder was immediate!  Since, I have used the catheter three more times, and it clearly is the way to go.

Sure wish i would have read some of the experiences in this forum ahead of time; probably would have saved me from considerable pain and discomfort.

      thank you

No problem  Glad it helped.  Most of the time they don't use a catheter.  My urologist said it was up to the doctor.  I felt it was in need.  Had alot of blood the first day and urine was clear in 24 hours  Take care  Ken

    Bill,

thank you you for the words of encouragement. I am actually quite optimistic that this procedure will provide positive results. My objective for sharing my experience is not intended to deter others, but rather to encourage the sedation. I didn't intend for my comments to sway others away from this option; just enlighten.

    thank you

Week 10 - All continues to go well. Over the past week and a half, I have steadily reduced my dosage of Doxazosin (Cardura), reaching zero two days ago. I can't say I have noted any change in symptoms, i.e. urine flow, retention, frequency, etc. My initial hope for the Urolift procedure was that, when all was said and done, I would experience symptoms no worse than before the procedure but be able to come off the medication. At this point, it is safe to say that I have exceeded that hope and am very thankful for the outcome.

Again, as I and others have stressed, have them put you under anesthesia and request a catheter for at least two day. The cath is a pain, but going without is worse.

I had Urolift over 5 months ago and first 2 months showed improvement reducing nighttime visits to 2 to 2, down from 2 to 4. I have provided update to my Surgeon and diluting next visit hope to get input and options if required.

I notice my condition has regressed progressively last 2 months and I have symptoms I did not have before surgery.

    - Need to urinate at night is back to 2 to 4

    - I often experience hesitation to start urination which I never had before.

    - Urination is often slow and lasts longer, symptoms I did not have before.

    - Sometimes after a pause Urination restarts once or twice to finish emptying the bladder, symptoms I did not have before.

I wonder if number and positioning of Urolift devices can be cause of my symptoms or if additional Urolift(s) is an option?

Hey Mike   I had the uro-lift done april of 2015   All has been good with me.  I do have hesitation when I urinate and it is slower then it was but that is not all the time.  I just saw my urologist today and had a scope done because I was worried but all is fine.  The 4 implants are still where he put them and the opening is still good.  And to his surprise my prostate got smaller.  He told me that I need to drink more because I am not holding alot.  I should drink more.  I only drink a couple of bottles a day  I don't have the problem getting up at night.  So I'm not going to worry about it.   I think it will get better for you.  We all heal diffrent.  Take care  Ken

You may need more.  I know Chuck on here had it done and they only put in 4 the first time.   He had to have another 4 put in.  Now he goes like a race horse..  Ken

I live in the USA and searching for post operative input I only found positive comments. Your input is very interesting. I was in the post surgery haze so did not hear how many Urolifts I had but my wife tells me I had 3 Urolifts. Do perhaps time & another couple of Urolifts will help. I noted comment on Chucks race horse performance after 8 Urolifts. This is a fabulous site. Thanks all of you for reporting.
