Uti misery

I have just found this forum and hope you lovely ladies can advise please. I am 59 and saw the consultant this week for cystoscopy. This followed 3 vicious uti's over a 6 week period. In fact I am back in bed today with another attack. It seems I have a mild anterior pro!apse and cystitis cystica. The recommendation is long term antibiotics and short term topical oestragen. Has anyone else gone this treatment route, and has it helped? My life feels pretty miserable with these constant painful infections.

Hello. Is the oestrogen for your UTI's or to help with your prolapse? I presume the antibiotics will be for a UTI so you may get more response on the forum for urine infection. If the oestrogen is to help with your prolapse this treatment is being used more and more to help thicken the vaginal wall however it is mainly progesterone that is used.

Hi Matron. I understand that the oestragen is for the prolapse and that a prolapse is a factor in causing uti.

I didn't think a prolapse would cause a UTI, did they give a reason for this? As we get older our vaginal wall starts to atrophy (usually around the menopause) and by building up the vaginal wall it helps the prolapse and it's particularly useful following surgery because it gives the repair a better chance of being successful. I was prescribed progesterone pessaries prior to surgery and I still occasionally use them.

There's no reason why they shouldn't both be ok

There have been concerns about natural progesterone. I would suggest you ask this question on the menopause forum because I don't know enough about it.

I have just started a new treatment for constant uti's and kidney infections which I have endured for years. It's a new vaccine you take for 3 months alongside a short course of antibiotics. It was developed in Spain and is not available on the NHS yet.

The results they have achieved are supposed to be marvellous and the urologists and urogynae consultants are very excited about this. My consultant put me forward for the treatment and I have to be monitored whilst taking it but after 3 months could be infection free forever! It is a vaccine treatment used every day and your immune system is triggered into fighting the bacteria that cause uti's.

I am also recovering from recent surgery for vault prolapse and anterior repair amongst other things. The surgery was complex and recovery has been difficult but I am well on the way to improvement and to get rid of the infections would be life changing.

      Hi terri,

That new vaccine treatment sounds great, good to know that women's problems are being researched.

I hope it continues to be successful.

      Phyl x☺

I think it will be years before it's available on the NHS unfortunately.

I suppose it takes such a long time to get through all the red tape for licensing. I have had to pay for it but I don't feel I have any other options now as I'm running out of antibiotics that will do the job. Some of them have been so strong that I have developed other problems and if I develop a uti will need iv antibiotics urgently as my left kidney has become so scarred. I am the eternal optimist so I'm sure this will have a positive effect.

It is so debilitating I know. Do you think because of your prolapse you aren't emptying your bladder completely and that's causing the infections?

I have been told that my bladder is not emptying due to the prolapse, thus causing frequent uti's. This is why doc is recommending oestragen in conjunction with long term antibiotics.

That sounds about right, suppose their just being careful.

As soon as I feel even a little nippy or uncomfortable while urinating I drink lots of cranberry followed by lots of water. Had problems on and off with cystitiis over the years.

      X☺

I think that's probably the best treatment until a decision is made as to whether to repair the prolapse
