UTI WON'T GO AWAY

So this is my first time writing on this forum...I never thought I'd be in this serious situation . I'm 20 years old and had a uti for about 1.5 months now....I've been on cipro (3 days), bactrim (7 days), nitrofurantoin (7 days), and nitrofurantoin again (10 days). It's been three days since I've finished my last batch of antibiotics and I STILL feel worst than ever. I even tried taking 100% pure D-MANNOSE which helped only a little. My gyn initially thought I had a yeast infection and put me on a one day pill...still nothing. Then on my second visit she was out of ideas referred me to a urologist. This is my second time visiting my urologist (today), and she was also out of ideas and referred me to a sonogram , because she suspects I have a kidney stone....I don't believe I have one since the urine cultures (al three of them showed no powder or crystals). I still feel the BURNIng in my urethra only ...which is weird . I talked to my doctor about IC but she says it's not possible because my urine culture always comes back with high levels of ecoli . I live in NYC and I feel hopeless!!!!!!! What do you guys think I should do?

I'm in the same spot. I've had 4 Utis since February I've gone Twice to the emergency room because the pain was so unbearable I thought there something horrible going on inside and the only thing they found was a Uti. I'm on Bactrim now but I don't think it's helping because I started getting pain again. The one thing my gynecologist said was it could be that my estrogen is low. But she want to try the Bactrim first.  And I am at the premenopausal stage so I guess we will see. It's so frustrating because not only do I have pain but it makes me horrible to.

I have all the same symptoms, persistently for weeks.  I’m so upset, been on 3 antibiotics and I get up all night because I have to pee which ends in a burning horrible pain, and have been to er for it.  I guess they are referring me to a urologist and doing an ultrasound.  I’m so frustrated and feel I’ll from the antibiotics.  Same as yours except now I’m on Doxycycline.  I’m so worried.  I am thinking though it can be also related to estrogen loss because I’m 52 going though menopause.  How are you feeling now?

I’m replying to your last post this month Jen.  You’re back at the Dr with a uti?  How are you feeling now?  I’m wondering if I might   be experiencing what you were diagnosed with finally the dysfunction down there. I was  wondering what the exercises were that you were doing.   I’m going to see urologist in a couple weeks so I’ll have to mention it to him thank you for all the information

Also apple cider vinegar contains malic acid that targets ecoli. If you drink a tablespoon a day or even a few times a day it should help. <3

Hey Audrey, sorry for the late reply I didn't get the notification. I've gone back to 98% better now . It's been about 2-3 weeks that I've gotten better, I don't have burn or frequent urination anymore. It's almost as if I never had this to begin with. I've gone through this painful journey and realized that your body WILL go back to how it was no matter what you're going through right now. So be patient and stay calm bc pelvic floor dysfunction gets triggered by stress. I stopped taking my gabapentin too and did more stretches. I found one thing that helped me the most which was really WEird. I sleep with my legs WIDE apart and the next morning I don't have anymore burn (weird huh?). In physical therapy I learned to do a butterfly stretch with my legs (you can look it up online) and doing the baby yoga pose helps too.

Sorry for the slow reply!!! It doesn't but you can mix it with water, diluted quite a bit as it's not good to ingest undiluted and you can add sweetener or something to change the taste if you like. Please only drink it through a straw otherwise it can damage your teeth.

Hi Jen, If you have antibiotic resistance you can do phages/phage therapy in a clinic in America. They can get the right ones to target the bacteria. I can't remember what the clinic was called but it'll be on an online search. I have the same problem so I'm looking at doing them in a hospital over here in Australia.

The doctors and urologist probably haven't mentioned it to you because it's alternative medicine but it can save lives.

my Dr employs a DO i her office.. what do i need to ask when I go to see her... i have ecoli in UTI and it is apparently antibiotic resistant..

You can ask for a qpcr test, it shows lower levels of bacteria (that's if it's not showing up). https://www.sciencealert.com/a-standard-uti-test-is-leaving-many-women-without-appropriate-treatment-claims-new-study

Also, I recommend Solaray Yeast Cleanse, eating a low gi diet and taking Kirkman Biofilm Defence. My ecoli kidney infection is 90% better from these whilst avoiding spicy and acidic foods together with sleeping on time to heal but I'm going to start taking Probio 7 as well because I heard that's really good. What's a DO please? I'm not familiar with that terminology. xx

Hi Frankie, I'm sorry to hear that. I wrote this post originally to share what I was going through and how many doctors refused to treat me/denied my illness. I went to a lot of specialists and gyn like your daughter and have gotten the same response from them- given a lot of antibiotic cocktails which only made things worst- my immune system was down, the antibiotics made my urethra burn and damage my bladder. What you described sounds like your daughter has myofasical pain of her pelvic muscles due to a UTI. I know it's weird how it came to this but my doctor who diagnosed me (finally), told me that after UTI some people react sensitively to an infection and start to mimic symptoms of UTI even after the ecoli/infection is gone (negative culture). This is called the guarding effect. Some people are more predisposed to this than others after suffering a really bad UTI. But anyways, im 21 and know how crippling this is- especially if your daughter has school. You should take her to a uro-gynecologist because they might know what myofasical muscle pain after UTi means- she might have minor pelvic floor dysfunction like me due to a year of myofasical pain. The incontinence , frequent urination and burning are all symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction. If treated early, her problems may go away in half a year-year depending on physical therapy and management. I don't suggest continuing with the antibiotics or pain killers...my pelvic floor dysfunction cured normally with physical therapy and relaxation at home with stretches .

Frankie, consider starting a new topic with your specific problem.  Titled something like: ESBL Ecolic UTI.

This is the first time on this site that I've read from someone that has had the ESBL Ecoli.   You don't say if the urine cultures are now clear of bacteria.   It sounds like they are not.

What other tests has she had done besides a urine culture?  Has she had ultra-sound, CT scan, Cystoscopy, voiding cystourethrogram?

Marliee as of right now every culture comes back positive for bacteria unless shes on IV antibiotics yesterday the dr. Called and said ecoli again but didnt specify if its esbl and so far shes had 2biopsy,VCUG, several ultra sounds, cat scan with and witout contrast, 2cystostopy, botox injections and the only answer is her bladder is severely inflamed

If she still has the e-coli, then it likely still is the ESBL which from what I understand is very difficult to treat.   It seems you and the doctors have done everything they could.  That said, I had to go through 5 different doctors before I was able to cure my UTI that lasted 7 months.   My answer was 3-4 months of lose dose antibiotic.  I didn't have esbl though.   My doctor's thinking was that my bladder was inflamed (just like your daughter's) and that the long term antibiotic gave it a chance to quiet down.  If the UTI returns right after going off antibiotic, then the antibiotic failed and left some bacteria behind to grow.

Probably if I were in your situation, I'd search for some top notch Infectious Disease doctor, even if it meant significant travel.   Also, please consider putting your daughter on some good probiotics because all those antibiotics wreck havoc on the system.
