UTI WON'T GO AWAY

Posted , 37 users are following.

So this is my first time writing on this forum...I never thought I'd be in this serious situation . I'm 20 years old and had a uti for about 1.5 months now....I've been on cipro (3 days), bactrim (7 days), nitrofurantoin (7 days), and nitrofurantoin again (10 days). It's been three days since I've finished my last batch of antibiotics and I STILL feel worst than ever. I even tried taking 100% pure D-MANNOSE which helped only a little. My gyn initially thought I had a yeast infection and put me on a one day pill...still nothing. Then on my second visit she was out of ideas referred me to a urologist. This is my second time visiting my urologist (today), and she was also out of ideas and referred me to a sonogram , because she suspects I have a kidney stone....I don't believe I have one since the urine cultures (al three of them showed no powder or crystals). I still feel the BURNIng in my urethra only ...which is weird . I talked to my doctor about IC but she says it's not possible because my urine culture always comes back with high levels of ecoli . I live in NYC and I feel hopeless!!!!!!! What do you guys think I should do?

I'm sorry to hear that Mari sad There is hope . I'm like 99% better right now after taking extremely low doses of gabapentin (100mg a day). My uro gyn found out that I have pelvic floor dysfunction which was caused by my Uti. My pelvic floors learned to guard itself, so the tightness of my muscles cause burning, which you are experiencing. You might want to see a urogynecologist because most regular gynecologist won't know your condition (in my experience). Also, it sounds like you might have my problem. As far as the period stopping, I'm not sure if it's related to this problem or something else. But I sure do know that stress and pain from EVERYTHING you've gone through can delay periods . Feel free to ask me any questions. I'll be happy to help smile

Oh my. I'm sorry you are going through this Jen. I am reading

      your story and everything you

      have described is exactly what

I am going through. I too have

been on all this crazy meds ...

      Bactrim and now

      Nitrofurontoin. Im seeing I

specialist as she is convinced I have pelvic floor syndrome as well. I have done therapy for it in the past (they teach you how to relax and even massage you) sounds crazy but it help.

But now here I am back to the

      crazy burning UTI's, smelly pee

and discomfort. I am trying to

stay positive along with taking probiotics, rather than killing

all good and bad bacteria in my body. But I just feel like some-

thing is dying in me. I do not

      drink or do drugs.

      You're not alone here.

Hi Mari, I'm sorry that you're going through that. It's horrible, I know. :'(

You could try phage therapy. There's also a test that you could look into getting that shows lower levels of bacteria called the quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) test. If you can't access it perhaps you could ask a pathology or phage clinic from somewhere to send the kit and instructions for a local pathology to do the test prior to phages. If you can't access it you should probably still do the phages as you need to avoid sepsis. xoxo

      Hey Jen

I myself am from the NYC area and I think its time for me to get myself into the city. I have been battling a uti for a month now. 3 different medications sulfa macrobid and keflex, can't do the cipro, and nothing worked. I'm really nervous that this won't get fixed. I am taking D mannose which I feel is the reason my culture is coming back negative. Of I don't take it I'm in alot of pain, my pain is not when I urinate, my pain is on my side and back. I thought it was a stone bit they ruled that out. I want to get the scan from radiologist and hopefully have a urologist see it, mayne they are missing something. I have been living on Advil and it's something I have to stop because my stomach can't handle that.

What else can be causing these uti?

Caterina, if you do not have pain during urination and the cultures are coming back negative, what makes you think you have a UTI?  How did the doctor know which antibiotics to prescribe if there was no  bacteria identified in the culture?

I think if we look at all the threads in this forum, we can see that chronic uti's are common.  So many similar situations.  I think the answer for some might be to stay on a prophalytic antibiotic for a while.  That is what I did, and it did wipe out the e-coli which hasn't returned in 4+ months.  Sadly though, a new bacteria developed but thankfully I am asymptomatic with it, so not having to take antibiotics.

I have had more UTI's and been on more antibiotics longer than anyone I've read on this forum.  It's been physically and mentally debilitating.  I feel for all of you.

I have come to the conclusion that the protocol is the same everywhere.  People see their family doctor, get prescribed an antibiotic a few times that doesn't work, get sent to a Urologist that does an ultrasound and/or cysto, and they all show no problem.  Thus, back to square one.

I do want to reiterate something Jen wrote early on.  That is, if the urine is very diluted, the culture will come back negative or with less bacteria.  I have seen this happen when testing myself with a dipstick.  One void, the urine will show positive, and the next it wouldn't.

I tried to check out that phage therapy.   I can't find a resource here in the USA.

Hey Catarina, I understand how you feel-it's frustrating . It sounds like the doctors you've been to don't quite know what's going on which is why I highly recommend you see my urogyn specialist. If you're coming to NYC , schedule for an appointment with Dr. Tanaka Dune at Presbertarian Hospital near 70st. Her appointments may be a long time but I HIGHLY recommend her because she deals with these specific problems you're talking about.

I have the same problem. I got a uti a little more than a month ago. I went to the emergency room because I had blood in my urine. I went on an antibiotic and it didn't work. I've been on 2 more and my urologist said it got most of the bacteria away but I still had more. I went on macrobid and it made me sick. I'm on ampicillin and I don't think it's working. I'm in so much pain and I'm so nervous and tired of this feeling. I think I've developed a yeast infection from all the antibiptocs I've been on as well. I just had a test at the gyno. I have an uncomfortable feeling down there, foul smelling urine, and lots of pain where my bladder is. I'm so tired of this and I don't know what to do anymore I'm so scared. The pain is awful I can't sleep sometimes.

I'm sorry to hear that sad. Coincidently I'm having a uti at this moment. It's been a year since I had uti and it sucks. As I speak it's 4am in the morning and I'm waiting to see a doctor. This happened after having sex and not taking cleaning precautions sad Have you sought a urogynecologist or pt? It will help you

The only thing that helped me was d-mannose. I also took a little raw garlic with some salsa 3 times a day for 2 days. This cured my bladder infection. I had blood in urine, stomach and lower back pain, low grade fever and chills. I went from not being able to walk to everything back to normal except for some burning in my urethra. I never had any antibiotics. I still take d-mannose and will continue it for a month. If anyone wants to try this you have to act fast. You dont want the infection to reach your kidneys. There are specific symptims to watch for kidney infections

what if i dont like garlic?  what are the signs its gotten to your kidneys?

first off, good luck finding a good doctor- and when you find one he will at least tell you after several , unsuccessful attempts of antibiotics along will not work well - he needs to check your acidic urine if it is below 6.5 - you need to make it alkaline otherwise the infection will come back-   you need to change all your diet for a while and stay away from anything acidic including cranberry and anything acidic and sugary - and unfortunately you may need to check the antibiotics used in europe like fosfomycin and other ones- most doctors blow- whatever they read they think it is and nothing else- some stupid doctors will tell you if your ph is 5.5 is ok- no, it is not ok - you need 7.0 ph level to have a healthy environment in your urine and if not the bio films will reproduce quickly  and become full-fledged  bacteria- and also be careful of vitamins and most supplements and estrogen or hormones will make your ph acidic and your infection will not go away  and so vitamin D for some people like me will make things worse- or acidic . story short, stay away from doctors who are useless who throw at you antibiotics right away for a long period of time without looking for the cause of the problems- tons of them

d mannose only works if you have E-coli but if you have acidosis or metabolic acidosis, colovesical fistula- or overactive or sensitive bladder  etc... it will make it  worse because d- mannose cause bloating and kidney problems- be careful and it does mimic uti symptoms

Hi, i'm the primary care-giver for my Mom, who is in her 104th yr, and suffering recurrent UTI's. After a recent string of 5 UTIs in the last 7 months, I finally went with her Dr's advice and now trying Mom on a prophylactic daily dose of amoxicillin which she started 3 weeks ago. It seems to be working, however over the last few days I see the warning signals of another UTI; so running a lab test Monday.

I'm at my wit's-end in this battle. I was struck by your post and immediately did some research into the PH factor. I found one meaningful article by By Julia Evangelou Strait on research, at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, that would seem to agree with your comments. I joined this form today, principally to reply to your post. I'm wondering how you came to your conclusions? Did you find any research science backing this idea? Is it based on your experience? The conventional view is that acidic urine is best for preventing UTI, yet the article I mentioned above points to PH near to 7 (which is neutral, not alkaline) due to activity of the protein siderocalin.

This is a very complex issue and I'm hoping you will reply with whatever info you have on the subject. Also, if you are managing your own urine PH, how are you managing that? Any info would be helpful.  The bacterium species usually present when Mom gets the UTI is Enterococcus. Her Dr figures that she is NOT being contaminated from any exterior transmission source (i.e. PSW, or fecal matter), but rather its naturally occurring.   Thanks for any help you may provide!

hi Donald- how are you -- give me few hours and i will reply-- I'm cooking right now.

Hi Donad- can you give me or tell me about the results of your Mom-- Negative results including blood test, pH, medical history, bilirubin  etc...

Hi there, Mom's urology test came back today negative for a UTI, so no need to pursue the discussion now I think. Seems like the daily dose of 250mg amoxicillin is in fact working.

      Thanks for your reply!
