Went back for a TVU scan and the access as halved in size but my uterus is the size of a 4month pregnancy. I have been started on Zoladex implants for 3 months to help shrink this and possibly have surgery to remone one ovary, fallopian tube and my uterus, not had any side effects as of yet, just wnanted to know if there is anybody out there who has had similar and will i gat ant side effects.

Hi Nicola, I'm 49, 2 teenage kids and a belly full of fibroids! So have only just started Zoladex after unsuccessfully awaiting menopause, hoping they would shrink on their own. Have only been on it for a week and had felt really well until my period started and it's so,so heavy it lead me to the internet!

It sounds like you've already been in a lot of pain with your abscess, so you probably are fairly pain tolerant! You don't say your age? How long have you been on zoladex? Hope I can help?

Hi Debbie thanks for replying, I am into the 3rd week of my first implant and I seem to be fine. I am 45 yrs old and had no children, Im not sure if i will get a period while on zoladex. The reason the doctor put me on it is because they are quiet large and because im at least 5-7 years away from menopause they wont shrink on their own. I have read that you can only be on zoladex for a maximum of 3 months and when you stop the fibroids just grow back, so i am expecting to have surgery early next year. I am back at the hospital mid december to find out.

I started my injections on Jan12th for 3 months and i am having my op on April 7th.The fibroids will grow straight back so don't wait too long afterwards.Next year sounds too far away.

Hi Nicola, hope you're still feeling well? I have been plagued with migraines no doubt a side effect of Zoladex throwing the full force of menopause at me! I'm also booked for hysterectomy early January. Love to keep in touch with our similar paths!

Hi Debbie, Hope you are well, Im just into the second week of my 2nd zoladex implant and the side effects are now now showing. Night sweats with headaches, very easily irritable and although the bleeding has stopped im still "spotting" blood. Just to let you know the nurse who gave me my last implant happend to tell me that they are @ £300 a time and are not used vey often only in special cases.

    Hi Nicola,

Sorry it's been a while getting back. I hope you're hanging in there with your treatment . I have had my second implant two weeks ago but had no more bleeds although headaches have been very frequent (2 or 3 per week). My hair seemed to malt like after I finished breast feeding! Like you the sweats are awful! Poor menopausal women! I feel like someone is lighting me up with a blow torch!! On a positive, my large uterus and fibroid have shrunk quicker than a pair of budgie smugglers in the cold ocean! I seemed to be a bit more stable, mood wise. I hope your bleeding has stopped? Do you think you'll have a myomectomy? You're still so young. My op has been forwarded to 1/12 so I will have lots of time to chat. My Dr wanted to do a myomectomy but I insisted due to my age, history of endometriosis, ect. I will go on hormone replacement after. Let me know how you're going?

      Hi Debbie

Great to hear from you, Im at the exact same stage as you with my treatment and my side effects apart from the hair loss, I have noticed a gain in my weight !!!

I have got my ultrasound on the 15th Dec and I am certain my Fibroid has shrunk from about the size of an advocado to a satsuma then I am back on the 17th Dec to see my consultant. Because of the  problem with my ovary and fallopian tube on the left he wants to remove them and to be honest I would prefer a hysterectomy rather than a myomectomy as i really don't plan to have children now at the age of 45. I am hoping I will have my op early January as I cannot see them doing it before christmas, will let you know. Good luck with your op on the 1st will be thinking of you. Please let me know how you get on. I must admit part of me thinks (hopes) that if they shrink and dissapear i might not need an op or am i just wishfull thinking.

Take care and look forward to you hearing from you.

Hi Nicola & Debbie, I am in a similar situation to you both. I have huge fibroids which are pressing on my bladder and making me look like I am four months pregnant. I have been on esmya for 2 months to try and shrink them but am now debating the zolodex implant to see if it more effective. I'm booked for a hysterectomy in January but would like them to shrink to prevent really difficult surgery... I'm just worried about the side effects, I would be grateful for any advice.....

      Hi Nicola

Great to meet you, As you can see from mine and Debbie's conversations there are many side effects with Zolex which we are both encontering, but as it is  with any mediation side effects can differ from person to person. Personally I am having lots of hot flushes and night sweats which to be honest are not pleasent, also enlarged breasts and weight gain, however on the plus side it is working as my fibroid has shrunk. I am having 3 implants ( 1 every 28 days) before hopefully having surgery in January. I found a lot information on the internet. Hope this is of some help. Let me know how you get on.

Hi new Nicola, just replied to original Nicola, just wanted to say hi to you also! My op all went well so I am here for you if you have to walk that path! The zoladex does work well but is just like having been thrown into a nasty menopause and like nicola says, can be different for everyone? Depending on your age, ect, it would be great to avoid surgery! Luckily these drugs they use to shrink fibroids are hormonal, so their unpleasant side effects are reversible later on. I noticed after the 2nd zoladex that my bladder and bowel were feeling normal for the first time in years! Let me know how you're travelling? Will be watching over my 2 Nicola's😃👭

Hi Nicola and new Nicola! I'm home and on the mend now. I think I have lots of tips for recovery! Even after my last ultrasound picked up that my fibroid had shrunk, it was a nearly 3 hour op to remove the grapefruit sized thing! I'm very lucky my Gyni and assisting Dr are friends of mine and they did everything to avoid big abdominal cut. All I have is 4 little stab wounds! Let me know how you go on the 17th with the specialist. If that naughty fibroid has shrunk so well maybe least invasive approach is for you. I'm on hormone patches already. In hospital I just wanted to cry at anything and I already feel happier now! How are your moods on Zoladex? My poor family had to put up with a lot of crankiness prior to op! Hope you're going along well but make sure you take a list of questions for your next appointment. Talk again soon x

      Hi Debbie

Just to let you know went back to the consultant on Weds and will be having a abdominal hysterectomy in the new year, the zoladex did not make much of a difference and got to have onr more while waiting for surgery. Will let you know when i get a date for the op. Hope you are doing well and have a merry christmas x smile

      Hi Nicola,

Sorry to take this long getting back. Definitely let me know when you have a date. If it helps, I'm feeling so,so, much better than pre op. My tummy has no pain now and just have to remind myself that I've had my bits removed. Hang in there with the moods, it's not nice when you're normally happy to be hit with zoladex induced crankiness! The great thing is, Zoladex is also working on shrinking the blood vessels, the uterus as well as the fibroids, making op time a lot safer. The uterus measured 30cm at my first ultrasound! Try to relax and have a wonderful Christmas! Thinking of you, will talk again soon. Xmas hugs x🎅
