Vagifem for vaginal atrophy

Posted , 7 users are following.

The GP thinks ongoing vaginal pain is caused by dryness/atrophy (I'm 20 years past the menopause!).

We are trying vagifem while waiting for an ultrasound to make sure there is nothing else going on.

Has anyone used this and how did it go?

As an alternative she says full on HRT is still a possibility even at 62 (maybe another discussion there)

    That's interesting, Sus28.

I'll make a note of that & take a look next time I'm in Boots.

I've not tried the coconut oil yet as I want to get rid of the itch first then concentrate on moisurising.

    Thanks

    Hi Sus28

I was itch-free all day Monday & Tuesday.

Last night I used Gynest (I'm just moving onto the once per week phase) and the damn itch (external) is BACK!!

    Thanks for asking.

I wonder if I'm intolerant (my OH would say I am! LOL) of any of the ingredients.

I know you said you became sensitive to it.

Also, I'm feeling so down - and I don't think it's just the itch.

One of the side-effects seems to be depression and I just can't seem to see the positive side to anything at all and just can't get motivated to do anything.

    I'm not ME!

    Did you any similar feelings?

I feel it is very debilitating at this time of our lives. Go to the doctor. Go with knowledge. Ask for help. Ask to go to the specialist. I BECAME TEARFUL AT THE DOCTORS. Yes I became sensitive to gynest. It's not the best way for you to get oestrogen.

    Hi Sus28

Sorry for the delay in replying.

I seem to be OK for a couple of days then back to square one.

I've started keeping a note of how I'm doing for when I go back to docs:

Fri 12/9 used Gynest (at night)

Sat 13/9 & Sun 14/9 very itchy externally

    Mon 15/9 & Tues 16/9 OK

Tues 16/9 used Gynest (at night)

    Wed 17/9 very itchy externally

Thurs 18/9 itchy and a very bad discharge

    Fri 19/9 itchy

Sat 20/9 better but slightly itchy & discharge again

This morning I'm not feeling too bad.

The discharge looks like all the cream that's gone up is coming down - IYSWIM - and it's yellow. eek

I've finished my anti-biotics and will take a urine sample to docs either tomorrow or Tues.

I'm due to use Gynest again on Tuesday - this is the first of my 'once a week' sessions.

I'm going to persevere with it for another couple of weeks and then if it's clearly making the itch worse, I'll go back to docs and ask for Vagifem.

On a brighter note, I've started using the coconut oil.

Not sure if it's done any good but I've also put some on my lips (well, on both sets of lips really cheesygrin) and my face so I smell like I've just climbed out of a vat of Malibu.

I could not use Gynest because of side effects but the Vagifem seems to be better. My gynae said it takes about 3 months before I will see a difference. Have not tried coconut oil I seem to be allergic to a lot of stuff.

Yes it seems to be that we become allergic to things. We are so sensitive

    Hi guys

Just an update on my 'itch diary' from me:

Sunday I was OK-ish, just a tad itchy

    Monday I was fine

    Tursday I was fine

Tuesday night - I used the Gynest

I've been itch free Wedneday, Thursday and feel OK this morning - Yippee!

So maybe I'm not intolerent to the Gynest.

Will use it again next Tuesday then drop to once per fortnight to maintain lubrication - according to my GP.

I also seem to be feeling much better in temperament so things are looking up (I hope).

Am pretty pleased with the coconut oil as far as moisturising is concerned.

But, I'm not getting any staining to speak of.

Maybe I'm not using enough of it?

I've noticed that if I am about to develop thrush the gynest makes me itch which is why I use multigyn on the days I do not use gynest, as a preventive. The multigyn stings initially for a few mins but they say thats normal. I have experimented with the gynest for 3 years now and find if I use it less than 3 times a week sex is impossible.

As a P.S the coconut oil sounds like a win win idea, as well as soothing and moisturising it apparently kills the yeast that cause thrush. Be really interested to hear how people get on with that one.

I got some from sainsburys. Some stores charge the earth but sainsburys seem a good quality brand for quite a good price.
