Vaginal hysterectomy due to prolapse, what to expect?

Posted , 5 users are following.

Hello, I am new to the forum.  I have just been told I need a vaginal hysterectomy later this year due to prolapse of womb, bladder and bowel.  At the moment I am on a 6 month intensive course to strengthen my pelvic floor (it's none existant apparently).  I am really scared about having a cathetar fitted, just don't like the thought.  Do you always have one fitted after the op?  Also does anyone who has been through the same thing know how long I am likely to be signed off work for?  I work in a school but no heavy lifting.  Many Thanks in advance.

Hi the catheter is inserted after your anesthetic so you don't even feel it. I was up and about 24 hours later. But slow on my feet for a week or so.

Hi, I had catheter after my hysterectomy, you really can't feel it and like Mel says they insert it while you are under anaesthetic, also when it's taken out it doesn't hurt it's just the usual feeling of exposing yourself to yet another person briefly, lol.😃

Thank you, I do feel slightly better about it now.  How long were you signed off for?

6 weeks is the norm I think, I didn't have prolapse like you and am retired but usually they say 6 weeks, you get really tired, yes I know I'm possibly a lot older than you but you will get very tired and it can come on very suddenly, I didn't quite fall asleep in my lunch but almost, 😊, I am 5 weeks post op and just starting to feel like me again.

Thank you for your help.  The letter says I will be having the other prolapses sewn back into position.  Can't wait!  Glad you are feeling better.

Hi I to am fairly new and have been reading everything on all the discussions ..i am 12 days in my hysterectomy. And can honestly. Say so far so good ..i had a large fibroid and bulky uterus. Although I had a marina to reduce the periods to none ..so was apprehensive as to have the op ..as I didn't feel as bad as some of the. Women desperately waiting so wasn't sure if I was going to go at all with the op ..up till going in I was having mega wobbles etc ..i was petrified so much that my vein disappeared ..so on to the right ..i was geared up for a bikini line cut etc etc ..praying they could do the keyhole..within. A second I was gone woke up in recovery 2 hours later with no pain no sick etc ..just cold .a he's blanket. Was put on me then I went back to I said have you done it ..yep he said all done by keyhole ..and That was it till I woke up in my own room ..i was sooo lucky to have it done in a private hospital. On the NHS ...they knew I was worried. With pain etc ..and kept me topped up with meds ..although I have to say the pain was minimal ..bad period cramps is all I can say ..i had a catheter. And packing inside but you don't feel a thing ..next day all removed out bed washed and walking ..i nearly cried when the surgeon. Came I was so grateful. He managed to do op lapro ..top surgeon. !!!. The catheter. And packing were uncomfortable. For a second ..but all was followed by needles. Out hand the lots ..i had first class treatment and looked after fabulously..i still had very little pain ..only wind ..but was in my own room so wasn't going to suffer ..i drank gallons water and thought. Not getting an infection. And ate everything. Farty ..lots of eggs type food ..i was in the shower second day walking around and walked to the physio room ..i have been home 9 days and feel brill..only using paracetamol. And Nurofen..ive been shopping cinema. And for dinner ..i was dreading the whole thing but am glad its over and told the nurses id be there worst nightmare. As I was petrified..not the case ...i have no nasty fibroid now and no marine inside me and can only feel I a weeks time will be back to me ..whether my recovery. Was a fluke or I was expecting. So much worse ....go with it if you think the positives are going to be better ..so sort for rattling. On but I only have good reviews now ..and hopefully wont change xx

Ah that's brilliant, thanks so much for sharing your experience.  I had the merina coil too, but had it taken out as it got dislodged with the prolapse.

    Hi  Caroline

Welcome, the ladies on this site are wonderful, they have lots and lots of information and help.  I am waiting at the moment to have a vaginal hysterectomy, like you I have a prolapse of womb, bladder and bowel, even though my pelvic muscles are as strong as an ox!  I have always done my kegels all my life.  They think it was the menopause that made a mess of everything, I'm 64.  I was about to have my op but because of all the sickness around, all the surgical beds have been taken so I am a bit in limbo at the moment.

I had my pre-op assessment last Thursday and they said walk, walk and more walking, but no keep fit for at least 3 months after the op,  I was gutted.  So I don't know how long you will be off work, it seems to depend on how quickly you recover and everyone seems to be very different.

I had a cathetar fitted when I was given a bladder test, and two on the bowel and it was completely painless so am hoping it will be the same for this op.  My Care Nurse did say that a cathetar is not always fitted so again everyone is different.    Keep us posted on how your pelvic floor exercises are going.  Have you got a pelvic floor physiotherapist?  Mine is absolutely brilliant, (especially when she said my pelvic floor was really really strong!) very helpful.  She also told me to put my feet up half way through the day for about an hour to take the pressure off the bladder, as my cystocele is pressing right on it!  It certainly helps a lot.

    Take care

I have just had my appointment through for a physiotherapist.  Interested to know how they can test your pelvic floor?  The specialist I saw who diagnosed etc told me he wanted me to be able to crack a walnut, he said at the moment you couldn't crack a marshmellow, lol.

      Hi Caroline

You have to sign a consent form before they test you, but you can still change your mind at the last minute.  Some ladies just do not want it done, but I just wanted to know, after years of working at my kegels I could not believe that it was all to no avail!  You get yourself into the same position as for a smear test, and then the physiotherapist inserts two fingers into your vagina and tells you when to do your kegels, fast and slow, and then she assesses from the squeeze how strong your pelvic floor is.   I did have a Kegel 8 machine but it was just too sore on my prolapses and I find it is much better to do it manually.

Angela who is my 'cheer leader' as I call her was very very nice, and spent a lot of time getting to know me before doing the deed.  She was interested because I tried the self help route before deciding on the op.  I used to go to the toilet every 20 mins and have got it down to once every 3 hours by giving up wheat and sugar and some fruits (which cause leaks!) you usually have a chaperone and they give you a sheet to put over yourself, to try and keep your dignity (don't know about you, but I don't have any left at all after all the poking about and tests, I have gone past caring who sees what!)

Sorry but you did make me laugh about 'couldn't crack a marshmallow!' but I have the answer, if you go onto YouTube and type in Michelle Kenway, she has lots of videos on how to progress from basic kegels to advanced ones that will really strengthen up your pelvic floor.  I do five sessions a day and usually two are done watching her advanced video, she just seems to make me pull up and grip just that bit extra.  Anyway have a look at the site and see what you think.  I have emailed Michelle with a few questions as she is a qualifed Hysterectomy & Physiotherapy nurse and she always comes back with very helpful advice.

      Hope this helps.

      Warmest Wishes

I can't believe how helpful everyone is.  Thank you so much for the advice. I will have a look.  I thought they might use some horrible medievil contraption to test the pelvic floor.  So thats ok now.  Lol.

Caroline just another thought.  I had to have a catheter fitted after I had an accident and had major orthopaedic surgery whilst on holiday abroad.  There was no privacy or curtains in my three bedded room and I couldn't pee whatever they tried.  They fitted a catheter which was completely painless and the biggest relief I have ever had in my whole life.  It stayed in for a couple of days and it was painless when removed.  Just a bit of a quick sting as it came out.  Claire
