Vaginal hysterectomy due to prolapse, what to expect?
Posted , 5 users are following.
Hello, I am new to the forum. I have just been told I need a vaginal hysterectomy later this year due to prolapse of womb, bladder and bowel. At the moment I am on a 6 month intensive course to strengthen my pelvic floor (it's none existant apparently). I am really scared about having a cathetar fitted, just don't like the thought. Do you always have one fitted after the op? Also does anyone who has been through the same thing know how long I am likely to be signed off work for? I work in a school but no heavy lifting. Many Thanks in advance.

Welcome, the ladies on this site are wonderful, they have lots and lots of information and help. I am waiting at the moment to have a vaginal hysterectomy, like you I have a prolapse of womb, bladder and bowel, even though my pelvic muscles are as strong as an ox! I have always done my kegels all my life. They think it was the menopause that made a mess of everything, I'm 64. I was about to have my op but because of all the sickness around, all the surgical beds have been taken so I am a bit in limbo at the moment.
I had my pre-op assessment last Thursday and they said walk, walk and more walking, but no keep fit for at least 3 months after the op, I was gutted. So I don't know how long you will be off work, it seems to depend on how quickly you recover and everyone seems to be very different.
I had a cathetar fitted when I was given a bladder test, and two on the bowel and it was completely painless so am hoping it will be the same for this op. My Care Nurse did say that a cathetar is not always fitted so again everyone is different. Keep us posted on how your pelvic floor exercises are going. Have you got a pelvic floor physiotherapist? Mine is absolutely brilliant, (especially when she said my pelvic floor was really really strong!) very helpful. She also told me to put my feet up half way through the day for about an hour to take the pressure off the bladder, as my cystocele is pressing right on it! It certainly helps a lot.
Take care

You have to sign a consent form before they test you, but you can still change your mind at the last minute. Some ladies just do not want it done, but I just wanted to know, after years of working at my kegels I could not believe that it was all to no avail! You get yourself into the same position as for a smear test, and then the physiotherapist inserts two fingers into your vagina and tells you when to do your kegels, fast and slow, and then she assesses from the squeeze how strong your pelvic floor is. I did have a Kegel 8 machine but it was just too sore on my prolapses and I find it is much better to do it manually.
Angela who is my 'cheer leader' as I call her was very very nice, and spent a lot of time getting to know me before doing the deed. She was interested because I tried the self help route before deciding on the op. I used to go to the toilet every 20 mins and have got it down to once every 3 hours by giving up wheat and sugar and some fruits (which cause leaks!) you usually have a chaperone and they give you a sheet to put over yourself, to try and keep your dignity (don't know about you, but I don't have any left at all after all the poking about and tests, I have gone past caring who sees what!)
Sorry but you did make me laugh about 'couldn't crack a marshmallow!' but I have the answer, if you go onto YouTube and type in Michelle Kenway, she has lots of videos on how to progress from basic kegels to advanced ones that will really strengthen up your pelvic floor. I do five sessions a day and usually two are done watching her advanced video, she just seems to make me pull up and grip just that bit extra. Anyway have a look at the site and see what you think. I have emailed Michelle with a few questions as she is a qualifed Hysterectomy & Physiotherapy nurse and she always comes back with very helpful advice.
Hope this helps.
Warmest Wishes
Jacqui
