Vaginal hysterectomy due to prolapse, what to expect?

Posted , 5 users are following.

Hello, I am new to the forum.  I have just been told I need a vaginal hysterectomy later this year due to prolapse of womb, bladder and bowel.  At the moment I am on a 6 month intensive course to strengthen my pelvic floor (it's none existant apparently).  I am really scared about having a cathetar fitted, just don't like the thought.  Do you always have one fitted after the op?  Also does anyone who has been through the same thing know how long I am likely to be signed off work for?  I work in a school but no heavy lifting.  Many Thanks in advance.

Hi Caroline, are you a teacher like me? A colleague who is a TA had a vaginal hysterectomy and was off 6 weeks. All depends on the type of op you have but it would say for your procedure 6 weeks would be the minimum. I had a TAH due to massive fibroid with bikini incision. A difficult op so I'm gonna be off for a quite a bit longer especially as teaching is an on your feet all day type of job. I'm having a phased return to work also. The catheter, as others have said, is absolutely fine. Don't worry about that. Good luck with everything.

Hi Sally, I am a Learning Support Assistant in a secondary school.  I was sort of thinking it would be about 6 weeks to be honest.  Just need to get an idea of time frame so I can prepare things.  I work as a dyslexia tutor more than LSA and will have to make arrangements for the pupils I see daily.

    I Caroline

Sounds like were having the same operation. I'm having a vaginal hysterectomy and bladder and bowel repair due to prolapse. My pre op is on Wednesday and my op on the 11th. I also work in a school and have told them I'll initially be of for 6 weeks. I'm getting nervous now but for me I know it's the right thing to do. Tried pessaries but they didn't work. I'll let you know how I get on. Good luck.

      Hi Fugaz and Caroline

Sounds like we all have the same problem.  Bet you both cannot wait to be fixed, it gets very uncomfortable doesn't it?  I had my pre-op but all operations in my area (Kings Lynn) are cancelled because of the nasty sickness bugs, the surgical wards are full to the brim with these poor sick people.  So I wait, and I wait!  Trouble is I was geared to go, no nerves, just bring it on.  Now I know what will happen I will be a complete cowardly custard hiding in the corner!  Oh well at least I can Zumba until I get the call.  Hang on in there ladies.

      Thanks very much.

I will keep everything crossed for you for Wednesday, and that you don't get a delay!  Hopefully all the sick will be getting better and we can all have our surgical wards back.

Don't forget to put your picture on your profile page.  I keep persuading people to put their pictures on, it is lovely to see everyone, especially if you are having a bad time, cheers you up seeing the rest of the sisters.lol

      Hi Tracey

Just wanted to wish you good luck for tomorrow.  Remember the calmer you are, the better the recovery.  That is what my consultant keeps saying to me, and he seems to know what he is talking about!   Just think before you know it you will be in recovery mode and giving us lots of helpful information.  razz

Hope it all goes well for you and you are soon up and about.  Let us know how it all goes.

      Hi Caroline

Thanks I'm just making a list of questions I want to ask. I was diagnosed as anaemic at Christmas and have been taking iron tablets since. I'm hoping my bloods come back ok.

      Hi Tracey

I expect your emotions will be on a big dipper ride for the next few days.  If you need to chat, rant or rave about it all we are always here for you.  Let's hope you are first on the list.  Much better than sitting around, doesn't give you time to dwell on it.  Remember calm all the way it helps the healing process.  Take care

      Love Jacqui lol
