Vertigo

Posted , 6 users are following.

I have had vertigo for nearly two weeks. It is not as bad as it was the first few days but it is very limiting! I have purchased a Rollator to help me get around. I do not seem to be okay travelling in the car as I feel dizziier afterwards. I want to go to the pool but not sure if this is okay or not! I would like to hear from other people with this condition. I am worse at night and when I lay down and get up. Anxious to talk to others!

hi have you been diagnosed with vertigo or have you self- diagnosed?

I have been diagnosed by a doctor and paramedics. My heart and lungs were checked. I had an ecg and questions to come to a diagnosis. We had just returned from a driving holiday and one section was very bendy. I am in Australia. Pretty scary and debilitating!

i cant see how they can come to that conclusion just on questions id get a second opinion just to rule out vestibular disease and labrynthitis which have the same symptoms there are exercises that you can do depending on what exactly is wrong

They examined me as well. I see my gp in two weeks and she will do a follow up. What is your diagnosis and treatment?

i am not qualified to diagnose you by any means only i had labrynthitis last year i was diagnosed by the QMC which are the leading ENT dept in these kind of things read up on the internet vestibular and labrynthitis compare them to your symptoms then have a look at the diffrent exorcises for those conditions i was first told it may last a month or 2 or could be for life so i read up on these and did the exorcises anyway and believe it or not i had it for about 10 days where i couldnt walk properly it was as though i was drunk and drew alot of funny stares and comments from others but saying that i still now and again have a dizzy spell just come out of the blue

You do not need to diagnose me. I am just asking for your experiences. I have done all that research too. When I see my gp I will find out more as she is very thorough. Mine was so bad I could not get up because I just flopped on the bed when I tried. I have had a course of stemetil since then and am improved. I am 70 and it affected my confidence so I bought a Rollator to help me get around. There were several months where I was dizzy before this but this was acute and far more debilitating.

Ok Fudgeybear, I see my GP in two weeks. I need a diagnosis first. It could be Menieres amongst other things. My lovely GP will probably refer me for a diagnosis.

I hope you get some answers the exercises are not a total cure they just ease the vertigo feeling, they are just simple head movements.Good luck x

Hi Kathleen, I hav had this problem for four years now and have learned that actually the term Vertigo just means the symptoms, not the cause.  so you could for example have vertigo symptoms because you have  BVVP , or Meniere,s Disease, or Vestibular neuritis, and so on. there are many conditions that cause Vertigo symptoms.  A regular GP or Paramedic, unless they have done the the extensive training reuired  in the Vestibular System, can only hazard a guess.  The specialist you  need to see is called a Neuro Otologist They actually have to train another 4 years more than an ENT specialist, so,they know their stuff!  I am only passing this info on as I,have wasted/lost 4 precious years of being pushed around various ENT bods who have absolutelyy no idea!  Maybe when you see your gp,ask for a referral.  I am also a pensioner so I understand how debilitating  this is along with all our other problems and the need for speedy treatment.  all the pills mAde  no difference to me unfortunately and I am still under investigation with a second MRI to come this week at a new, specialist Neuro hospital,in London.

Thanks Gillian that was helpful! Are you able to get around okay or do you use an aid to help you? I will see if we have such a specialist here and get my gp to refer me. Have your symptoms eased or halted for a while or are you consistently dizzy?

Hi Kathleen, you won,t believe it but I just typed a whole long post in reply and this damned page wiped it,and reloaded the page, so,I,ve lost everything I Said!  This has happened before and it is really annoying (ADmin please note!!!). i'll  have to,do a shorter one for now and. MOre tomorrow as it is late here in UK. I can get around okay, but in the beginning it was hard and I spent a lot,of time in bed, feeling exhausted physically as well as the vertigo.  Mine isn,t spinning it is more a swaying feeling, and was holding onto the wall  in the early days. !  have  always been better outside though, strange eH?  But imhave also adjusted to it to a degree I guess. ,I thought i might have had a thyroid problem at one point and saw a private Holisitc dr. Who said I had a slight problem and advised me to,take certain supplements as i was finding the exhaustion as much of a problem as the vertigo stuff and I do think that has helped, to a degree.  I also find that if I do lot one day,,the next day will be bad and I cannot plan to,do anything the next day, so have to,space my jobs, travel, shopping etc out through the week as this thing seems to have a knock on effect the day, or,days after a busy one!   You say you are not good when you lay down and get up,,that is quite common, but do you continue to feel ,dizzy when you are laying down, ie when you turn over??  do you have a spinning, or swaying feeling when standing, do you feel likemyou are rocking  slightly  when sitting??  did this come on suddenly. Mine did,,overnight!   Your GP should know about Neuro,Otologists, bitjifmhen he Doesn,t go,on line and Google Neuro Otologists in.......Whatever area you are in in Australia.  What statem are you in.  I am Familiar with Aussie  as I have lived there and have family There, too. i,lived and worked in Sydney, but was also in Melbourne for a short time and have been to Adelaide where I still, have a friend. find the hospital, these guys work in (or women), print it,out a d take it with you to,yourmGP.  I find that the, best way and if he or she asks you why jaunt asay a friend in UK had the same  problem and only got good treatment when they saw this particular consultant and that they wasted a lot,of time on ENT.  Oh and don,t,get fobbed off seeing an audiologist. That was another big waste of my time that took,up nearly a year!!  If you need an audiologist the Neuro one will tell you and you can bypass all that if you don,t.  my friend in Adelaide said that Audiologists abound in Aussie, but they are of little use unless you have, soley,,a hearing  problem.  so,digest, all this and do some homework on the Neuro, otologists in the hospitals where you are.  they will be there don.t worry!!

I am near Melbourne on the Mornington Peninsula. I think there is somewhere in Frankston. Otherwise, Melbourne is an hour away. When I turn in bed especially if soon after I get into bed I feel it. I noticed after being in the car I was swaying. I think a road trip started it off especially one part that contained extremely windy roads. The first time it happened I was getting up to go to the toilet at five am but kept dropping backwards onto the bed. I thought I had improved but still could sway sideways. Months before I had dizziness and this seemed to follow surgery on my shoulder with an awake intubation which caused some bleeding and I wondered if they nicked something! I decided to get a Rollator to make me more mobile and build up my confidence which was severely kicked. I would like to connect to you Gillian as I feel I can relate to you. I wonder how we can do that safely. Maybe the moderator can help us?

Thanks for the feedback and help which is much appreciated.
