Vertigo on and off for years!

I just wondered if anyone else found being on a computer for a long period of time made them worse. I had some sort of inner ear virus for the second time at Christmas saw a specialist etc balance tests came back normal so did vrt, slowly helped and felt bit better so decided to go back to work but I work in a office on a computer for 5 hours a day also there's quite bright lights which I don't think help, anyway seems to of come on again so thinking could be the computers certainly don't think they are gonna help seeing as my therapist said the more active you are the quicker the recover.

Most definitely it makes it worse for me, also reading printed word in books, newspapers (in fact gave up reading books 4 years ago).  Although the screen, bright lights etc do have an adverse effect, i feel (and this is just my own theory) that it is more to do with focussing on one point for too long.  I noticed recently whe i was doing some hand sewing and looking at the same area on the material, i felt the 'head thing' worse - also if later in the day or night when tired i get nausea feelings if i go on computer too long!!  You might want to read DizzyDarren's recent blogs about the 'eye connection'

As for your therapist's remark about recovering quicker if you are more active, i am afraid to disagree. In fact i make myself more active as i have so much to do in the garden, the house whatever (also going to a gym over last few months to do 'gentle'ish exercise), actually exaserbates it.  Not necessarily at the time, mostly later on,and even the next day, i feel awful, and i know exactly why, because i have been 'more active'!!!  You might want to mention this to her next time you talk.

Thanks for your reply Gillian. I've also noticed I get the funny feeling at the back of my head after staring at the screen to long, I think it's because the eyes pay a big part in the balance! I think what she meant is to not sit about if possible but I guess not to over do it because I agree with you about it making you feel bad the next day. Do you do any vrt exercises that's what got me better the first time I got it about ten years or so ago it did however take just under a year before I was almost back to normal although it would pop up with colds and when I was pregnant. I think mines triggered by stress do you wear glasses? The ent I saw said my right eye wasn't aligned like it should be or something so need to get eyes checked. Do you take any medication I found it did nothing..

If you love reading, have you tried using a Kindle. Kindles work on e-ink technology so you don't get the glare or light issues you would get with say a smart phone and tablet. You can also adjust the font size for easier reading !!

Firstly, no, i don't take any meds - they either ddn't work or made it worse!  If your right eye isn't alighed right, then definitely see an optician as they can do things for that.  Look on website NORA that mentions that kind of thing.  I also get the thing in back of head, kind of low down, so probaby top of spine part that goes into skull area - never really known what that is apart from tension!!

I wear glasses for computer and bi focals for reading and tv, but no other time.  Stress will make anything worse, ie headaches, guts ache, so i don't attritbute that as the cause.  None of the vrt worked for me am sorry to say as a lot of people have found too.  if you are on Facebook, got to VEDA - American - all about our problems

I hate taking medication, and apparently it slows down recovery and can imagine they are hard to come off of. Yeh I get tension in neck and shoulders. Do you get full feeling ears? And pressure in your head like it's gona explode. I think sometimes you can over do it think got to do it gradually you sound like you have lots to do like me I only have the one child thank god because I don't think I could cope lol have you had any periods when you've felt a lot better? I think I might have to look into a new career because sat at a computer is definitely not working for this kind of condition. You'll be surprised how many people have had some sort of vertigo it's weird the way it never fully goes tho.

yes also get that head exploding feeling - and gp's ent's never seem able to explain it do they!  I am actually retired and dn't work - thank god, because i honestly don't think i could manage to now, not just 'cos of the vertigo, but the tiredness (to put it mildly!) is just as big a problem.  I don't have kids or husband, just a dog \9that needs walking of course), but as i have to 'spread' my jobs out and can only manage one room at a time (an not necessarily days in a row!), and in the summer too many hedges \and lawns to do, i spend my summer's 'knocked out'!  I wish i had a hubby or partner to share the load, as i know some friends and family just do not 'get it' as they don't have to do everything - ie the hubby does the gardening (well in my street some do!) and the bins and dirty jobs etc. and wifey does the cooking and tidying up - keep telling the dog he needs to pull his weight, but he just goes to bed and ignores me!!!

Oh that's good to know it's not just me that gets all these bizarre things. Trying to explain them to other people is hard because they feel normal. Try not to let it get me down stay positive! Having to walk the dog is prob a good thing though gets you out think when you don't feel so bad need to make most of it because it's so up and down. I went on a bloody roll coaster last year a fast one felt slightly dizzy but it can improve because I'd never of done it otherwise. Do you get popping ears to? And I strongly get bloodshot eyes when it all starts off again.

Yes, long spells on the computer don’t help me either. Probably because they are bright and maybe because the screen flickers and if you’re in an office lit with fluorescent lights, they flicker too. When you have an inner ear issue your eyes become over sensitive. I also don’t think it helps to be stuck in the same position for hours on end fixating your gaze on monitor.

You say your balance tests came back normal. Have you tried reducing the brightness on your monitor and have you had your eyes tested recently?

I'm on a computer for 5 hours a day in the same position so think it's definitely straining my eyes. I also sit under a bright light, I haven't had my eyes tested for a few years so will definitely do so. Yeh basically I first got all this when I was 18 saw specialists back then who said I'd had an inner ear infection that got undiagnosed so it left damage of some kind so I saw a physio and I'm not sure if it was that or the fact I started doing more, but over time improved. Was ok for about ten years well not hundred percent but as normal as could be it came back when I was I'll etc. but then last December it came back on like when I first got it so saw ent privately who referred me to see a balance expert who did all these tests to check my balance and inner ear were working and it was all normal but she said that's not unusual and a lot of her patients do so she sent me for vrt not sure if it has helped much was abit better so went back to work but last few days got full ears again pressure in head and feel off balance and things moving etc does this sound familiar to you? Mine seems to be triggered by stress. Sorry for essay smile

yyes, can relate to the full ears/pressure thing, have had for last few days, and not coincidentally i was doing a lot last week and Sat.  also weather can affect things too - barometic pressure etc.  There's quite a bt of info on Menier's disease websites of this.  I think that once you have the damage there's not a lot that can be done.

It's weird mine went for awhile and it's come back my hearings ok though I was tested for Ménière's and bpv. I know it's so rubbish just when you think it's improving aswel something triggers it off. I don't think I get enough sleep all these things don't help matters. Have you had tests done by anyone Gillian going back to the doctors is pointless for me because nothing shoes up.

yes have had 'tests' - for hearing etc., balance etc., but apart from small things, nothing that helps and i just hate going to follow up appointments as i know i will be disappointed.  And like you i don't go to drs (ie gp) as cannot bear the look on their faces (ie vacant).  Have done twp rounds of ~VRT at two different hospitals, no good.!

Yes I know exactly what you mean, head/ ear pressure, off balance although I don’t see things moving. What I can feel is me moving/ swaying, I don’t feel sturdy on my feet and I have commented here before that I don’t like to be standing around and I don’t like standing in queues and I don’t like standing at a counter where the person on the other side is either lower or higher than me….Weird !!

Like you stress can aggravate my symptoms so I have moved away from the stereotypical grumpy old git of a bloke in his 40’s. Getting wound up by things I can’t control, just isn’t worth it and I if I can help it, I won’t put myself in stressful situations anymore. The irony is that before this all kicked off, I thrived on stressful situations, targets, deadlines and so on. I was always the person people would go to for help and advice because I took everything in my stride.

Like Gill, I’ve gone through the VRT process and it didn’t work for me either. I’ve had this since 2009 and I my argument is just living and going about my business has probably exposed me to enough VRT anyway. I also haven’t taken any medicine for about a year.

How do you feel when you are in a busy environment like Asda and/ or PC World?

On paper I get at least 8 hours a night but I am still shattered and yawning the next day so I must ask the doctor for a sleep study. Good quality sleep is so important and I know these days I never wake up feeling refreshed….sounds like you don’t either?

Have you improved atall since then? It's weird because when I first got it ten years ago I hadn't done any walking where I was so unsteady and dizzy then I went to my hospital appointment which was the otherside of the hospital and the next day I felt bit better so I do believe moving around will slowly compensate. When I'm not so bad I don't mind going not when I feel bad usually do online shopping. I don't drive and don't know how people with these type of things do. I agree stress is the key factor to so many illnesses maybe all that stress took it's toll and it was your body's way of telling you to slow down. I had just started a full time office job last November just before got ill again and being a single mum I think was to much for me.

Have things improved? That’s a difficult one to answer because these days I score myself as percentage of my old self. On a good day, I’m about 95% and on a bad day I can be at about 75% and it all depends on what I am doing at the time, the environment I am exposed to, the stress I am under and quite often the weather. (I know it’s going to rain before it actually does).

What is quite clear for me is that my virus killed my balance cells in my ear and they ain't coming back and now that I have now accepted this I have been adjusting my life accordingly.

When I reflect over the last 5 years, yes I have got better, or maybe I’ve just got better at understanding me. I don’t avoid things like I used to but I do thoroughly plan the things I have to do.

I think I will get close to 100% but it might take me another 5 years. It’s a very slow recovery !!

Hiya Darren Gill ,Deni and you to Charlene.Same symptom thread again, got to be a connection to all this balance ,some with tinnitus others without, some can trace it origins to a virus and ear infections, head and ongoing neck aches fullness of the ears and then there's the stress issue, which affects all of us with having this.We all seem to be able to cope daily, prior to getting these problems. How can it leave a person for X years then hey presto it comes backLike you Darren I sleep well even with this tinnitus, but 8 hours good sleep,I feel shattered after a few hours of being up.ive done the exercising bit ,made no difference whatsoever I'm with Gill on that one.

So no remedy cure from me today, but got to be answer out there.every day seems more are finding this site.so how big a problem is it.?I ask myself and been doing that for past  3 yrs..Still got old specs on Darren ? XX

Tried it couple times ,made not a scrap of difference.i don't think it does for many who have tried it.hit and miss therapy, but would never say not to give it a go.,some with this get sick feeling,I'm one of the lucky ones ,who've not had this. I'm fine to drive, some not, weird ( my most used word since I got this  ) if you've read past post ,we all have one missing symptom, affecting this balance I find,Me and Gill both have a sinus problem others not , whatever the cause it's from the neck up.thats a definate.maybe neurologist need to look bit closer ,get there heads together, trouble with med people they don't conflab, maybe if they got their heads together we'd be closer to getting answers.thats my opinion to it all
