Vestibular issues caused by memory foam mattress?

I was wondering if anyone else has started experiencing these vestibular issues since buying a memory foam mattress? Seems coincidental that weeks after my mom purchased this type of mattress, her vertigo started. I purchased same mattress and then shortly after, I began to experience migraines & dizzyness. I am hoping this is not the case, but certainly has me concerned.

Hi!
I have just linked my ill feelings to my mattress that I bought a year ago too! Can you tell me if you are starting to feel any better? I am sleeping a different room now and wondering if your symptoms are slowly getting better? Ours costed $3500 too! a Stearns and Foster. My husband is going to try to talk to the store to see if they will exchange. My eyes swelled with eczema starting last fall and it just didnt' get better. I have been really dizzy the last few months and last fall I developed a cough that took over 2 months to go away! My husbands eye are super flaky too. He just hasn't had all the other side effects I have been having. Just hoping there is hope in feeling better!

Hello. I just started sleeping on a memory foam mattress five days ago and I have experienced dizziness while laying down or sleeping in my mother's guestroom. I'm thinking it's the mattress because it's quite significant as soon as I climb into bed and especially when I change positions. I'm also dizzy for about 15-20 minutes when I initially get up and I've had to be really careful because I walk as if I've had a lot to drink; diagonally and forward - really unsteady.

I was looking for a recommendation for a mattress for my vertigo and happened on this site. I've had chronic severe vertigo for almost 5 years with no relief in sight. Just a new normal...sometimes. as Gillian stated, it's different every day or sometimes from morning to afternoon. Awoke unable to hear out of my left ear and terrible vertigo set in about 8 hours later. Had my foam rubber mattress 5-6 years before onset of vertigo. No virus or injury. So, in my case, don't think it was the mattress but wouldn't discount it if the mattress was new at onset of the vertigo. I have found a vestibular organization that has been helpful but nearly every single case is different. Well, anyway, have to sleep with my head slghtly elevated and on my right side (hearing side) since sleeping on the left (non-hearing) sends my vertigo sky high, immediate nausea and awakens me. I'm starting to have neck and shoulder pain (like a pinched nerve) and pretty sure it's from always sleeping on my right side and my neck in an odd angle. So, any suggestions are appreciated.

Hi I thought I was the only one which is why I began searching to see if anyone else experienced this. The very morning after having my new memory foam mattress topper I had really bad vertigo, I ended up in the washroom about 7 minutes after being up, had no idea what happened, I've never had that before. I have had this for 1 week now, I have an amazing sleep but every morning since I wake up dizzy!! I am convinced it's my topper but I dont know and I dont know what would cause it?? Doe this sensation go away, or am I doomed lol? Thank you every one.

Hi Ashley,
My neurologist told me that I have BPPV, bening ear problem, went away after a month and a half. However my wife and I had some neurological problems after.
I have the feelings that toxins in foam mattresses are the cause so I returned mine to Costco. Good luck to you,

Hi Ashley,
I am sorry to read that you went through this too. Yes, I am absolutely convinced my vertigo episode was due to this, in addition to my mother's episode. It occurred immediately after we both received the same type of mattress, months apart. We live in separate homes. I almost lost my mother due to her vertigo episodes. She had to be hospitalized and developed pneumonia while there. All of that could have been avoided. I contacted Sleep Country Canada who sold us the mattress, by phone and email. Via phone, they fluffed me off and they never replied to my email. Both mom and I still have our mattresses, we are saving up to buy new mattresses. Our vertigo issues have cleared up for the most part, but dizziness is still an issue for us both. Yes, sleep is amazing for the first 6 months, but u sweat like a pig on this foam and the weight of ur body (and I weigh 130 lbs) leaves a dip in the mattress so when u want to roll to another side, u just get pulled back. I am wondering how many more are out there that have suffered needlessly due to these foam mattresses.

On June 6 2020 I bought a new memory foam mattress for my wife's birthday. We followed the instructions and aired it out. After 4 days my wife experienced vertigo. We thought she had an attack of labrinthtitus that she suffered from decades ago. But this didn't seem to go away for weeks. Also, she started to realize it was effecting her in memory, concentration, and always seemed to get worse when she lied down and tried to go to sleep. As the months progressed she begin to feel a dead sensation in arms and legs, especially getting worse in the legs. The dizziness kept lingering. The doctor thought it was BPPV and prescribed excercises for the crystals involving neck motion. After 7 months she mentioned wondering if it was the mattress and googling it came up with your comment and further research led me to believe she was suffering from offgass poisoning. That day I removed the mattress and repaced it with my son's old spring mattress for her to sleep in. I wrapped the foam mattress and returned to Costco, they gave me a full refund. Meanwhile I found a used natural latex innerspring mattress and bought it. As each day progresses for the past 2 weeks she no longer has the dead feeling in her leg and arm. Dizziness is receding, and no vertigo. She is very chemically sensitive. She now sleeps soundly and restfully, we are convinced that the toxins in either the fire retartdant or the poly itself is responsible. She almost quit her job and considered long term disability. I notice that Costco is not selling these mattresses in a box and wonder if they've gotten too many returns. We also changed her memory foam pillow for a natural latex one and that's been better too. Thanks for your original posting.

I purchased a foam mattress about 3 or 4 months ago from Costco but I just started to get the exact symptoms as your wife 3-4 weeks ago.
I had vertigo 2 weeks ago, on and off about a week but the dizziness and brain fog are still lingering. Tonight I started to get dizzy again (but worse than some other nights) as soon as I got on my bed. I cant just ignore so I searched and found that there are people experiencing the same problem.
I am suspecting the problem is from the foam mattress is bouncing or vibrating while we sleep on it. It is just not that much that we can tell but our sensitive body, nerve and ear can sense it. It could also from the foam chemical as well.
Since I purchased the mattress a few months ago, not dure if I can still return it.
Jollysam, was your mattress Casper?

Marie, thank you for posting about this article. Now that we know that we are not alone suffering from foam mattress. There must be a lot of people out there being sick from sleeping on foam mattress and not knowing the root cause.

I think sleep and lack of it causes these symptoms. You need to do what is best, its important to get yourself a good mattress that suits your specific sleeping habits and positions.

YES! 6yrs ago I woke up hungover on a friend's memory foam mattress for the 1st time. I rolled over quick and it hit me. Had to go to the ER and was diagnosed w BPV. Just recently I fell a sleep on my son's memory foam mattress after reading him a book and the same exact thing happened. It felt again like an airplane spiralling out of control towards the ground. I have had it for 16 weeks intermittently ever since. Every time I lay on it for a lengthy amount of time I get extremely dizzy getting up from it. I believe these mattresses have something to do with sparking or contributing to BPV 100%
