Vestibular Neuritus

Hey, about 3 months ago now i felt very panicky and ill - spaced out and dizzy. I would just want to lay in bed to hide away from it. Long story short i got diagnosed with Labrinthitus at A&E since then i was on escitalopram for a month and was very nervous taking them so stopped. I kept going to my GP and they said anxiety and then BPPV. I did exercises but no luck, my eyesight has gone and i wear glasses to help my head also feels weird and i cant focus on a object very well. Im also very tired!! I couldnt take anymore so saw a ENT specialist at hospital and he checked my hearing and said i have vestibular neuritus but i feel as though there is not enoigh testing i am only 24 and shouldnt be feeling like this. Im worse at night and feel very faint aswell going to the shops is a nightmare i feel like its driving my eyes crazy and my legs go like jelly!! Anyone feel the same?

    Hi rosina10737,

I too went to A&E a couple of months ago and was diagnosed with Labyrinthitis and BPPV. After the dizziness kept coming back I insisted on seeing my ear specialist again. After he heard about my problems in life, he diagnosed me with Vestibual Migraines, and the symptoms he listed seemed to match mine entirely (pressure in the ear, noise, dizziness, nausea and extreme exhaustion/tiredness). He also said I had Vestibular neuritis. He told me I feel exhausted because my muscles are constantly working hard to try and rebalance - I just wanted to lie in bed all day. I did the exercises (Brandt Daroff) for BPPV but they too didn't seem to work. My specialist has told me to persevere with Cawthorne Cooksey exercises (they are co-ordination exercises to help you adjust to the imbalance feelings) and given me Amitriptyline (10mg) to control the migraines. I haven't started taking these yet as I need to talk to my doctor as I have heart palpitations and need to check first if its okay. Keep fighting it, I know how tiring it is, and I hope you get better (which I'm sure you will)!

Thank you for your reply.. this condition makes me feel very isolated im on my 6th month and having an MRI scan friday as i worry about it being more sinister!! My ENT are not very helpful but need to get some VRT therapy they now think i have VN or V Migraines as i have auras for years too i have also been very deaf lately but my hearing came back fine i frel like i need to yawn and unblock my ears and as for palpitstions i have had them for years in having 24 hour ecg next week. wish you all the best.

I have also been told i could have migraines as i have had auras for years and very worrying as they cant see that part of your ear!! Im better than i was but not myself just want to be normal again!!!!! ENT also offered me migraine tablets but worried of taking anything!! Got anxiety now was manually breathing for months as i was terrified of fainting i would say drink more water as i dont and exercise like yoga it helps. Do you feel dizzy with palpitations or get any chest pain? As i do lol! and how are you in supermarkets ect!?

I've had problems with aura migraines since I was 12 years old, I read that vestibular migraines affect people who suffer from them but don't tend to happen until past the age of 40 (which fits in with mine - I'm 46). My specialist said the aura migraines affect the same part of the brain that the nerves to the ears are, so explains the connection. I've been signed off work with stress/anxiety recently so I think anxiety does play a big part in the balance problems. When I'm at my worst I feel noise and pressure in my ear with the dizziness/sickness but it seems to settle after a few days (although it took weeks for the first one to settle). I took one Amitriptyline tablet and it gave me a blinding aura migraine within the hour and made me feel drowsy/drunk the next morning and had to stay in bed all day until it had worn off, so I'm not taking them anymore. I'm taking ibuprofen every morning (after breakfast) and it seems to be (so far) helping ward off further problems. I read that it's rare for some doc's to advise it, but it can't help with some people (and block the migraines). I've also asked to see a vestibular physiotherapist on the NHS, but was told the waiting list is long (private is quicker but expensive). I don't notice my palpitations much (I'm just below the 10 percent), they just feel odd (like my chest is mumbling. I think when I first noticed them (a few years ago), it did make me feel dizzy. I'm asthmatic too which is a pain so it puts me off using my blue inhaler too much in case it can make them worse.

Oh woe i dont fancy taking those tablets!! My anxiety is better but doctors think im just dramatic all the time, they don't get it they just try give me antidepressants all the time but one ENT doctor said sedatives make recovery longer and side effects of most pills is dizziness! Ive had this since september 2019 and had auras every couple months lasting about half hour since 17 im 24 now i do have glasses which i wear as much as i can but especially in evening at my worst my head feels heavy and strange!! im also in physio for my neck which ive had since july 2019 stress makes it worse. Really hope i had labrynthitus or Vestibular neuritis rather than it being a form of migraine way more cringy! Need this MRI Friday which i had to beg for as i convince myself i have a tumour!! Had more headaches recently i take Ibuprofen but think there tension headaches, just hate this as theres no real test for it i take vitamin d as was low but still here 😂 good luck i feel your frustration atleast im not alone as very isolating!!!

Also had the strangest aura month back, since having this my left eye was like blind but only at the top!! Need to see neurologist,,

Yes, your symptoms sound very similar to mine. Check out my original story. My symptoms started early December after a sinus infection. I have to take Xanax to calm the dizziness. Otherwise I am in bed. Eye movements set mine off and the computer does as well. I haven't noticed loss of eye sight. My GP diagnosed viral labyrhythitis. I am now waiting on a referral to a neurologist at a balance center for testing. Lights set it off and I can't go in places like grocery stores. I feel off balance and dizzy.
