    Hi Vanessa

I can't believe your physio told you to walk without your crutches. Both my surgeon and physio told me that it is very important to keep using the crutches for walking because they help to keep one straight and when walking they help to strengthen the groin and buttock muscles. They told me that I should carry on using one crutch or stick for at least 12 weeks when walking out and for up to 8 weeks indoors. I'm 10wpo now and although a slight limp can walk much much straighter. I would suggest a second opinion on this one

P.s. my surgeon told me at my 6wpo that once I felt comfortable with the physio exercises that walking with one crutch was by far the best exercise

I'm sure I read somewhere that if you are waddling you will be using your muscles incorrectly. Far better to use your crutches and not waddle and use the muscles in the correct way. I think 3 weeks is a little early.  When you get stronger you will be able to go down to one crutch and then none. You have to retrain your muscles after the op and I can't believe that using them incorrectly will help. I used mine for quite a while and even when I could walk quite well I took them along and used them when I started to flag and waddle.

Vanessa, i am trying to walk with no crutch its hard, walking on a crutch i walk practically normal still slight limp, but with out i walk better than I did before but not good, i had alot of complications along with my op, and have muscles that have locked in and around my hips, but every day you try it gets better, I just have to remember it's not a race, as my physio told me it's quality not quantity.

Hi Vanessa, I have just come of my crutches but have got 2 sticks that I have to use for another 4 weeks or so (I'm 6 weeks po now) so that will be 10-12 weeks with walking aids!  That's what my consultant does, time will only tell how it goes, presently I find it much harder with the sticks than crutches, maybe because I'm now using a different set of muscles, and first thing in the morning I'm really stiff and it's hard work to get going, likewise going from chair to standing is hard work!

Really don't know how you can walk unaided at 3 weeks!!!!!!!

I think the answer is 'it varies' - I have an extremely good prvate hospital, but I am on NHS.

I saw a physio one-to-one weekly for first 4 weeks

then I had physio 'classes', for next 6 weeks - 60 mins of targetted exercises with other hippies and knee patients.
