Waiting to have right hip done. I can't bear the pain anymore

im 49 & have suffered with hip pain on & off for last 4/5 years. X Ray in 2013 showed mild arthritis. New x Ray in February 2015 showed severe advanced OA. I've had lots of scans, cts etc since February. I had a major trauma as a 7 yr old child that majorly affected the way I walk & my hips have compensated for this all my life to date. I have an extremely high pain threshold but finding in the last 2 months that no matter what I take isn't even taking the edge off it. Any advice as to the best meds to take would be so appreciated. Up til now I've been taking difene & solpadol & then doc recommended taking tradol & difene. Spoke to pharmacists today & she said take paracetamol too. I've had a really bad day pain wise & am now sorry I delayed my op for a 2nd opinion. I could be 4 weeks post op if I went for it at the time. But surgeon needs to take my other conditions into consideration before I will be happy. My body must be preparing in advance as the only way I can sleep is on my back. Normally I would be a side sleeper in the foetal position. Sorry for the rant but I'm just at the edge of my tether with pain right now. Off to take more pain meds hoping I might sleep a few hours.

Is tramadol the same tradol? I asked pharmacist today & I think it is. But my heads a bit fuzzy between lack of sleep, pain & pain killers. What's amythrptilline? It's never been suggested here in Ireland. Is ther another name for it? How long since Ur 1st op? Fair play Ur going back to work. Are u up for it? I can't wait to be able to do day to day tasks never mi d back to work. I need my other hip done too they say 6 months apart. Would that be right?

Amitriptyline...10mgs, that is straight off of the box...They are a kind of painkiller and a slumber pill that put you to sleep, yes, they do make you drowsey, so dont take them during the day, at, all...as small as they are they are quite strong with the sleep side of their action, Just google them to find out more...Yes they said 6 months to me as well, and I am still waiting...So watch my space....cool I am lucky in that I work in a casino and can sit and deal Poker some nights....

      Kind regards Ian.

Morning dear Gossip ... I am so sorry that you are in so much pain and want the surgery as soon as possible ...

however ..... not to be negative ... you wrote that you have inected foot ulcers and just started taking anti-biotics .... when you have an infection they will NOT operate ... it is too risky - I am not a medical person but the way I understand it is, is that the infection will go straight to the new joint - there is a lot of warnings about infection for life after THR ... I had a tooth pulled and had an infection in my mouth - had to wait for 4-6 weeks -

There is a reason you went for a second opinion ...

please trust that feeling ... Pain is a bad decision maker ...

stop beating your self up, darling ... seriously ... I am a great believer of gut feeling and some kind of guidance - trust it , trust your self -

I wish I knew what you can do about the pain ....

be very gentle with your self - we are all here for you ....

enjoy your weekend with your hubby and the spa treatment !!!!

    love and blessings

    renee

Hi gossip, I know how you feel, the pain grinds you down,I feel for you. I am 11 days post op and through I face 12 weeks on crutches I am so relieved to get it done after years of pain and putting life on hold. My doc gave me transdermal patches that you change every 72 hours they contain fentanyl and slowly releases over the 72 hour period.I didn't find they took the pain away but did take the edge off. Also took cocodamol and extra strength ibuprofen. Doc also said I could take tramadol as well but personally wanted to still be able to focus. Hate taking all this stuff but need to function and look forward to being able to wean myself off soon. I find it incredible that with all the scientific discoveries theses days they have yet to find a pain killer that can actually take on the pain of arthritis and not have you totally 'away with the fairies' as a side effect. Good luck with your op.

Thanx Sue. I know we won't regret the decision to have the op done as all the other hippies on here are so positive about their experiences. Of course we will have pain after the op but at least I know it will get easier once the healing process is over. Best of luck to u too on Ur op.

    Hi Gossip

Sorry to hear you are in so much pain. In case you aren't already doing so, mske sure you take your pain meds regularly even if you feel you don't really need them pain is easier to orevent than cure and the meds do have an accummulative effect.

I concur with others here - make a nuisance of yourself until you have a date - it works!

    Good luck

Hi, Gossip and Sue, you won't regret getting new hips, I have rhumatoid arthritus , had it for about 12 years, I had a double hip replacement on 21.5.15, all I can say is amazing , the pain just went no more limping, no more pain, can get in the car, upstairs, yes there was pain after op, but bearable, now 6 weeks on I'm taking no painkillers at all and feel my life as been given back to me,

so go for it, it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be.

    good luck to you both.

    kaye 😀👍

what kind of doctor did you go to find out that this is what you needed? My regular doctor said the xray showed nothing and I just had another xray and a catscan and nothing. Now I'm going to try and get to a orthopedic specialist. do you think this is the right move to make?

I certanly hope this is what's wrong with my hip. When I turn on it in sleep I get such intense pain and can hardly walk. I've had xrays and CT scan and they can find nothing. If I don't sleep on it but on my back, which is not my favorite way to sleep, I can deal with it and they told me at ER that tramadol is what works best for these kinds of pains. I've researched everything and now I know it isn't a sciatic nerve or disc problem, doc said my hip joint looked fine. I have osteoarthritis of the spine but have been able to manage it with the tramadol but when I turn on that side nothing will take that pain away.

Hi Jan so sad to hear this as I had the pain you describe , started 10 years ago. I was told time and time again the pain was due to the arthritis in my spine and I was just feeling it in my hip. Now 11 Days post total hip replacement, I was told I hardly had any head of femur left when they operated. All these years I thought I was going mad when I was actually walking bone on bone.I had also had xrays that they said were normal.Keep at it Jan and hope you get better soon.
