Wanting to die

I've been depressed a long time. And I've sought professional help and I even take Prozac. None of it has been helping me. I'm slowly slipping into this darkness and I can't get out. I don't know what to do and I'm just so tired. What should I do?

Dear Angelina - go back to you physician and tell him/her exact;y ehat you have told us  - sounds like the prozac or the prozac dose is not helping your depression.Until you find a med or some other support like counselling u could stay the same. We on this site all know what it feels like and that feeling of descending into darkness  an be scary. i think the fact that you are on this site shows that you are still functioning enough to reach out and that is enough sometimes to keep u going. See that doc!  jen

Angelina, please understand that long term Prozac therapy can actually cause depression to get worse.  Please consider some TALK therapy with a good therapist and taper off the Prozac.  I'm a strong believer that long term usage of psychotropic drugs is not good and will either fry your brain or make your depression worse.  As with any drug, they will work at first but as your body builds up a resistence to it's affects, the benefits will wear off and either adjustments need to made in dosage or a change in the medication.  I understand that depression is a debilitating illness but I think we handle too many diseases nowadays by over prescribing drugs.  It's a temporary fix and should be used to manage a person until they learn how to manage their own thoughts and feelings which will actually change the way the chemical component of the brain functions.  Talk therapy can be very helpfull and is nonaddictive and does not alter brain chemistry to the point of being physically dependent on a substance.  It's just like alcohol or heroin.  Once the brain becomes dependent, it stops functioning on it's own.  Watch your diet and exercise and try to stay healthy.  A healthy body makes for a healthier brain and keeps depression and axiety at bay.
