Watching surgery on you tube !!!!!

Posted , 12 users are following.

Hi All,  I finally got my date through for right THR on 15th oct so I decided I would watch the posterior approach on you tuber as that is the way mine is being done !!!!!!  Wow no wonder we are so sore afterwards ! Especially the double dislocation bit. I'm not sure now if it was a good idea to watch or not !! But at least now I know, maybe ignorance is bliss !! I'm having the spinal anaesthesia and I think I will be asking for heavy sedation. Still 35 days from now the first hip will be done, then I have the same to look forward to 3 months later !!! Has anyone else watched the op and if so how did you feel ???  Maggie.

    Hi Maggiemac

Dare not watch it!  I am just over 3 months post op and feeling better every day.  I had spinal injection and sedation and did not feel a thing or hear anything at all.

    Good luck.

Hi maggie, I'm just like u & just had 2 c what I was about 2 go thru, I also watched the knee replacement b4 I had that done as well, my Mrs thinks I'm totally mental but I seem 2 want 2 know exactly whats going 2 b done & whats involved? I had the spinal with my knees but not with the hip, I really don't like the feeling when the spinal starts 2 wear off, but saying that, the pain levels r a lot easier 2 handle with the spinal, I've watched a shoulder replacement on you tube which I may have 2 have eventually & if I'm honest looks far worse than knees or hips? Maybe not such a good idea in this case? At least ur 1 down & 1 2 go so u know what 2 expect next time round, goid luck & hooe all goes well 4 u? ;-)

    Hi

I've had 2 THR's but never watched it in advance.

After the first one....my muscles were sore {not arthritis pain} I mentioned this to the district nurse when she came to check my dressing.

She said....You've never seen one done have you....they tend to throw your leg over your shoulder to get it out of their way while they workcheesygrin so its no wonder your muscles are sore LOL

Maggie, I went one better and in my working days watched in theatre, sore feet and all. I opted for spinal plus sedation or watching. My surgeon hastily opted for sedation (I think he envisaged a discussion with the patient during surgery). I'm 6 months on and hip is fine.  If you trust your surgeon, then relax into the sedation and wait for it to happen while you are asleep.

    Good luck

      Hi Ros

      Yes I did the same.

I hadnt seen it in theatre but during the talk with the consultant beforehand I said a spinal def. and I didnt mind  whether the sedation was enough to knock me out or whether I could hear what was going on...I didnt mind. He's used to me.....if I have spinal injections I'm the one that wants to be able to see the camera as its done  LOL

In the end I had a light sedation.

Hi eileen64, I think I will be having a spinal anesthetic instead of a general. Am scared to death of being put to sleep! Plus Ive had a spinal before and felt much more in control.  However Ive not had any sedation before.  As long as it doesn't make me feel dizzy or light headed I will be ok with it. Im not sure I would want to go to sleep with it though. So perhaps a light sedation would be good for me. I have to see the consultant on 23rd Sept so I would see what he says then. Scary stuff but I think I would still not have a general anaesthetic.

      Hi Shirley,

      You recover from the spinal more easily dont you {or should I say quicker}

You have probably mentioned but I've missed it.....are you having a THR?

The only thing and it's  funny.....after the operation I had a few minutes in the recovery room before going down to the ward again. There was a porter with me. You know the 90 degree angle? dont bend dont twist etc well I'm on the trolly and my knees were bent {or so I thought}feet on the trolly and knees bent. I said to the porter  My knees are bent and they shouldnt be....he said no they aren't...Yes they are  LOL He then said have you just had a spinal? I said yes to which he replied thats why????

You were sitting on the operating table, with your legs hanging and you were bent over while they gave you the spinal. Thats the last thing your brain remembers ...the shape of your legs. sitting, legs hanging so the knees were bent....it still remembers that but I can assure you your legs are completly flatcheesygrin  Arent brains funny things wink S I supposeI was a bit "squiffy" or I would have known my legs were flat LOL But back in the ward a few mins later everything was normal....no dizzieness or anything

That is strange Eileen! Yes brains are very funny things. Im having a THR. Got a really bad arthritic hip that is causing awful pain in my knees etc and impacting on my life every day. Had to stop working because of it. Going to be scared when the time comes wether they put me to sleep or not. So I might as well have a spinal and feel less anxious. Glad you had no dizziness.

      Hi Shirley

I think its normal to feel scared...I've had both done {at different times} and was scared both times LOL

You are up and out of bed quicker with a spinal rather than being groggy for the rest of the day with a GA.....no dizzieness

I hope you can get your pain under to control...to a certain extent  between now and having the operation

Hi Eileen64,  Thanks for your message. Yes probably its normal to feel scared. I wonder if I will end up having my second hip done eventually too.

Yes thats the beauty of a spinal isnt it. Up out of bed quicker and no grogginess or dizziness.  I would feel much better going down the spinal route Im sure.

My knee pain has been bad today. I take Naproxen and use that Deep Freeze Pain Relief spray on them too. I cant get comfortable easily in bed now and have problems all day long with my mobility because of my bad hip. I find that if I have been on my feet any length of time and I sit down its almost impossible to get up again without a major struggle.  So cars are difficult and going to the loo etc. And work. I have  had to stop work and leave my job a week today.

I might add at this point that I am 57 years old. But I feel 20 inside.  I suppose we all do.

      Thanks again for your messages.

      Hi Shirley

I think we all feel about 20 until our bodies kick in and tell usotherwise biggrin

I'm sorry your knee pain has been bad today....I use naproxen and I've got deep freeze spray and gel but use pernaton....which isnt so cold. It doesnt seem to be doing a lot off good at the minute {hips} so hearing you....I might give the freeze a try.....I've got it so why notbiggrin

Its sad that you've got to give up your job.  I'm 68now so dont need to worry about that....my last THR was in Jan and the previous one was 4 years ago.

I cant get comfortable in bed no mnatter what way i lie because of this fracturefrown

I'm lucky that I can drive cause I cant walk very far even on 2 crutches  LOL sdo at least i can drive to places and then walk a bit.

      Take care

Hi Eileen64,  Glad to hear you can drive. I can too. But my walking is limited. I can no longer walk round town easily or as far as I used to.

Yes bad knee pain.  Its evidently referred pain from my bad hips. There is no problem with my knees. Had them xrayed and nothing showed up. And I had been expecting knee replacement ops, not hip replacements!

I find the Deep Freeze spray helpful though more so on some days than others. Try it and see what you think.

Sorry to hear you cant get comfortable in bed. It takes me a while to find a decent position then when I get up to go to the bathroom in the night my right knee (Its the worst of the two) is locked and its really painful walking even a few steps, let alone round town or anywhere else come to that.

      Hi Shirley

I'm on 2 crutches and can only do 50 mins at the most and thats not often LOL  Need to stop for coffee in between timeswink Thats my excuse anyway.

I dont know if it was on this thread I said I saw the consultant lst Monday about the pain......he did X Rays and where the hip is fractured ther is a small bit broken away from the top of the femur......but it hasnt moved for the past few X Rays so he doesnt think its that that is making the pain worse.....so in about 10n days I'm in for a day procedure to have an aspiration on my hip....to draw fluid out and make sure there is no infection.

The next thing although not until November is the pain clinic.

When I get up in the morning its my left hip that is locked...what are we like LOL

Hi Eileen64,  I cant walk for 50 mins or an hour without stopping 2 or 3 times either though Im not on crutches. I use my stick though. Yes I enjoy coffee shops too although my knees are so bad I have trouble getting comfortable when I sit down, then getting back up again!

My fingers will be crossed in hope that no infection is found in your hip. I'm off to see the consultant in about 10 days (23rd Sept). I think he will give me a date for the op!

My friend goes to a pain clinic. She fell down the stairs and is in bad pain all the time.

Its murder getting up in the morning isnt it. Im limping and hobbling like I dont know what!  I know. what are we like?!

Work tomorrow till Friday.  Then I finish on Friday.  Cant work any longer in this state.
