Weaning off atenolol

So this may sound crazy but hear me out. I'm a 32 year old black female with high bp which I take lisinopril/hctz for. Well in January I started feeling anxious so my doctor gave me buspirone. Well I took it starting around May because really I was hesitant about taking it, but it made me loopy/dizzy like and I had palpitations so strong I ended up going to another doctor who put me on atenolol 25mg for 10 days and told me to stop the buspirone. So I stopped taking the buspirone immediately and stopped the atenolol Monday and it's Wednesday and please believe me when I say I have never felt this way in all my life. Like when I walk I feel like I might just faint. And even sitting down I feel so weird. I can't even explain it. I'm jittery and when I ate I felt a little nauseous. Any idea how long this might last? My right eye hurts too.

Studies have shown that hormones such as cortisol are raised for 21 days plus after ceasing and the density of adrenaline receptors increases while on BBs. Studies which only measure pulse and BP do not give a true picture of what is happening in the body. The hypersensitivity to adrenaline which seems to make withdrawal so unpleasant is hard to quantify - such an individual matter.
Starting to feel a bit more myself, still got a bit to go but can see the light at the end of the tunnel at last. It will be 3 weeks next Monday that I took my last 50mg Atenolol. Never again!

Its just the drunk zombie feeling that persists, 16 months after coming of beta blockers.

Hi Peter. How long were you on beta blockers? I was on them for only five months, came off them a month ago and am still not right. Two steps forward, then one step back. Anxiety is my problem - wake up sweating, any stressful thought at all can bring on a "hot flush" and sweating. Seem to improve then a couple of days later, back on the merry go round. I was thinking I am just malingering, but reading people's experiences on here has shown that they can muck you up big time. I imagine I am still suffering from hypersensitivity to adrenaline. I hope it will wear off - this is a tiring way to exist!
Hope your drunk zombie feeling does not persist. I only feel that I could sleep my life away! I thought that was avoidance on my part. What a mess these drugs make of one!

I kept having panic attacks and was given atenolol by my doctor. Yes i helped stop the 100 bp and helped me focus at work but still can not get any sleep. I thought this drug wasn't the best for me in the long run since every test came back negative or normal, from 3 EKGs to cardio enzyme tests. Use to take 50mg a day for a week but now i split it in two and take half a day. Now am lost what to do either to take half every one interval day or completely stop now. Last night was my first night without it and i felt awful all night, couldnt sleep but am okay this morning with heavy eyes from like of sleep

I was on this drug for over a year I'm in the uk. I wasn't given any choice of weaning off this tablet. My gp told me to completely stop I did not one side effects which was good. I lost alot of weight my BP came down it slowed my heart rate down so much at a resting heartbeat. So gp decided to take me off it altogether.

Ive been off it since June 2018 bit strange they giving you beta blockers for anxiety. It's usually given for the heart but in my case BP. Because ramipril my body got used to that drug. So had to try other drugs that suited me. This was the only drug that suited me for my BP. I went straight on to the 50mg

It was given to me initially to treat BP but the issue was my BP was given me panic attacks even at 138/83 and all test didnt show any heart issues. I was later diagnosed with health anxiety disorder, i was getting panic attacks on a regular basis and could go to work anymore. My doctor prescribed atenolol and it stopped the panic attacks and reduced my heart beat which shot to 100 bpm from panic attacks. Now am off it and i feel it creeping back slowly, pains and anxiety

30 years on low dose atenolol and let me tell you weaning off is making me sick. My doctor thought I should go off because my blood pressure was too low and I had been starting to have lightheadedness. Well, weaning off even a low dose us very hard. I do have lightheadedness and after my blood pressure got better she decided I must get a CT scan. Now, I'm not at all sure this is a good idea as I just finished dealing with skin cancer on my face. I don't want a CT scan anywhere near it. I think that the pills caused the lightheadedness and I think going off the pills is also causing lightheadedness. Her idea was to eliminate the possibility of mini strokes which is silly. I have LOW BLOOD PRESSURE and low heart rate, no heart disease except a Mitral Valve Prolapse which, by the way, can also cause lightheadedness. I do feel as if I'm battling a doctor now who tends to jump to the big stuff way before it's indicated. Also, I have a history of anxiety (also can cause lightheadedness) and her jumps are causing me to feel anxious. Is the a simply case of doctors protecting their butts (malpractice) by ordering uncalled for tests? What do these tests do to the patient? They cause untold amounts of stress and false indicators of problems that may not be a problem. Why not start with the obvious culprits plus perhaps my low iron which is hard to fix, ear, eyes all can cause some of this too. Why the big CT scan?

I am have a same problem as everyone of you. For a few times of the doctor visits, my blood pressure was a bit high and my pulse sometimes shot up to little over 100. My primary doctor then prescribed me antenolol 50mg. I did not know anything about it or any side effects. So I took it for about 3 weeks and little more. Sometimes during this period I felt a bit dizzy for like a couple hours and that dizziness went away. But for certain days, the dizziness lasted about a whole day for several days straight and that really affected me and like everybody said I walked like a zombie. However, one day my hands and feet were cold and sweating and I felt really weird and was finally made another appointment to see him. I did the ECG, took blood pressure and pulse measurement and everything was normal and OK. But during this time, I was still taking antenolol he prescribed me. I told him I had side effects of the med and he told me to take 25mg, which split the 50mg he prescribed. He told me to take it for 3 months and came back to see him. But because of the dizziness and the weird feeling I have, I said if there was a way for me to stop it but he refused and thought that I am having anxiety disorder because other people are fine with this medication.
Another feeling I have with this medication is that after I take it, I feel like my heart beats like really slow and sometimes really hard and fast. So I stopped taking for two days due to the dizziness and frog brain feeling but then I felt my heartbeat was irregular or heart palpation so I retook it for about a week and this time split it into 25mg. The feeling is still weird and nervousness and anxiety kicks in. I took it about a week and then stopped. The first day I felt ok and not as dizzy. But the second day, whenever I went to bed I felt like the heart beat really hard and I could feel the pulse everywhere in my body even like beneath the diaphram and through the abdomen. Then whenever I was about to fall into sleep - deep sleep, there was a a pulse of andrenline rush and woke me up. In other word, every time I felt asleep, I got waken up and felt scared and there was a heart racing and the heart pounded really hard and fast. This has happened 5 or 6 times (whenever I was about to be asleep) I am just wondering if any of you have this feeling or have had such a experience? I am trying to wean it off myself so I am just wondering if there is any strategy or better plan to do that.
Should I do it 12.5mg for a week, and then every other day for a week and every other other day for another week and then stop?

Here's what happened when I REDUCED ATENOLOL from a low dose to a super low dose. I was taking half of 25 to half of that, around around 9. I've been taking this drug 25 years for irregular heartbeats NOT high BP. At an older age my BP was going too LOW and my heart rate was in the 40's. REDUCING it caused: exhaustion, headaches, dizziness, balance problems, heart rate problems, anxiety and a general feeling of being sick, like having the FLU. I really felt like I was LOSING MY MIND and my health. This is when the doc. starting suggesting SCARY stuff like, mini strokes and having CT scans and many other tests options. She DID NOT CONNECT the reduction to these symptoms. I said no to everything but the blood test for iron levels. (turns out it is low) Granted, I didn't know for sure if such a small decrease would be doing all of this but I wasn't ready to JUMP ON THE MED TEST HAMSTER WHEEL as I did that many years ago when I was having other weird symptoms. It took them forever to come up with a diagnosis and at that point I felt I was becoming a HYPOCHONDRIAC. I ended up going to the MAYO and they diagnosed anxiety plus a minor POTS problem. BOTH of these can cause a variety of mysterious symptoms. BACK TO THE THE REDUCTION: After enduring a month or so of truly frightening symptoms they started to disappear. It was the reduction that caused the symptoms. It set off my heart stuff plus anxiety plus POTS and totally UNBALANCED my AUTONOMIC NERVOUS system. So, if you already have other health problems like anxiety or POTS or blood pressure problems you can expect to have a rebound effect of those symptoms because the Atenolol acts to reduce some of them. If the heart or BP symptoms become super serious go to the ER. One needs to make sure there are no permanent problems. Going off a long-term med will do this to people. Even if you WEAN OFF SLOWLY it can happen. TALK TO YOUR DRUGGIST. She knew about it when I mentioned the problems I was having. My heart beats irregularly more often now but not much more than when I was on the larger dose of Atenolol. Go figure. I think some of my symptoms over the years were reduced and some were amplified on this drug. It does get better. BUT NOBODY, including the doctor, understands how debilitating it can be to reduce or go off this drug.

Hi Wendy, I am new here just started a taper on beta blocker metoprolol. How are you doing after being off atenolol? Did your doctors give any advice or medication about getting anxiety under control?
