Week 1 Pain

Hi, I am 47 years old and on day 5 of my right THR. I am so sore and stiff in my thigh, is this normal? I have been going through some other posts and see people say 'home and pain not 2 bad' or 'home from hospital and not needing pain relief'. I am still taking oral morphine, couldn't cope with the pain without it. Is this normal? Thanks

Hi Helen! I second the ice, ice, ice! Your thigh soreness is normal in my opinion. I massaged the areas that would allow it. I think k that helped. Take your pain meds when you need them, too! Your one and only job right now is to take care of YOU! Walk as you can, don't overdo it at this stage. Eat healthy foods and try to be positive! You are very early on and may experience ups and downs. Sleep when you can. I had troubles sleeping on my back, once I relaxed about it and didn't stress so much because I wasn't getting a solid block of sleep every night, I took advantage of much needed naps and it eventually resolved as I healed. Patience is key. All the best to you Dear! 😄

    Helen,

Five days is not much time! I don’t want to scare you, but I am five months out and still experience stiffness (not so much pain) when I get up from a sitting position. Doing PT helps a lot. The exercises are important, and, as other people have said, it’s super important to move around. For the first couple of weeks, I’d set a twenty minute timer and make sure I got up and walked around at least that often, even if it was just to do a few laps around the kitchen island! Everyone heals differently and you have to go at your own pace, though.
