Week 5

Posted , 5 users are following.

I am into week 5 of my tkr, l can just about get a 90% bend but my knee is stiff, is this about par for this period of time. I am not sure what to expect l exercise 3 sessions a day  with 4 activities bending knee back with a scarf round my ankle, pushing my knee down to straighten it, sliding leg under chair and exercise bike. I can do a full rotation peddling backwards but not forwards for some reason.

    This is greatsmile

You are coming along. Amazing after 5 weeks and 90% bending your knee. Keep up the good work. Will feel stiff for a while there’s allot of swelling, keep doing your range of motion. In 2013  I  had Right TkR and after 4 months my knee felt great (I love my knee)

    Take care

    These will help...

    https://patient.info/forums/discuss/tkr-rom-work-at-home-620053

Week 5 is still very early.  Most people achieve their target ROM in the 10-12-week post-op range after a lot of work with a PT.  I went from -14 / +84 to -1 / +123 by week 12.  Lots of work to get there.  There will be advances, setbacks and plateaus...all normal.

Please to not compare your recovery to that of anyone else.  In TKRville, there is no "normal", "should", or "par".  Let go of all your expectations and timelines...they only mess with your head.  This is the most brutal yet most Zen of all surgeries.  "Your knee will be better when it's better."  The whole process takes about a year.  The stiffness will imperceptibly decrease over time but could last 12-18 months.  At 2 years, I still get a twinge now and then.

Your recovery will NOT be linear.  This is the reality of a TKR recovery.  Post it on your fridge...

    Sounds great, well done!

Are you resting, elevating and icing too?

I used to sometime elevate leg by lying on floor and putting leg almost vertical against wall. If you can do this its very effective! And the usual elevating with pillows to a lesser degree, must be above your heart to be effective, so lie down.
