Weight

Further good wishes to you Graham and maybe you could ask a question for me while you are being detained at NHS's pleasure.ย

On a much lighterย winkย Note I'm off to Jamaica early March for a couple of weeks "convalescence" and have been trying to lose a bit of weight so I can get into my holiday trousers(pants to our US cousins). It's not going too well and have been struggling to get down to pre op weight and it suddenly dawned on me, yes I am a bit slow, that the replacement metal must weigh far more than the bone it replaces. Does anyone know the weight of cobalt molybdenum chromium implant. I know yours was ceramic but maybe you or anyone else still in situ so to speak could find out.

I'll see if I can find out, I do know that titanium is very light, I have a titanium watch which feels lighter than plastic.

As for losing weight, eat less, eat better - I used to take sandwiches and pies to work, changed to salad and fruit. Much smaller portions at home, 1 potato instead of 2-3 ... No sugary or fizzy drinks (fizz expands the stomach). And calorie count, watch out for "low fat" which can be high in calories.

Hate to tell you, but my surgeon said the body absorbs the prosthetics and makes no difference at all to our weight!!!๐Ÿ˜–( don't know why) Wish it did as I have a knee and a hip!! I could kid myself that's why the wretched weight is up!!

Hip seems all good BUT haven't been able to try it out really......... Nearly 10 weeks PO but 8 weeks since I hurt my knee ( other leg) pulled hamstring ( grade3) and whatever else associated with, haven't been out of my house except hospital, Physio or specialist in that 8 weeks!!!! Surely that is why I weigh more now, or could it possibly have been Christmas? ๐Ÿ˜‰ ๐ŸŽ…๐Ÿ—๐Ÿจ๐Ÿธ

Just as I thought think surgeon will have to rethink that one. The density of human bone is 1.75 ish whereas the alloy of chromium, molybdenum and cobalt is about 8.5 which means that the prosthesis is about 5 times the weight. So guess the overeating over Christmas and new year isn't the reason for extra weight it HAS to be the op. Doesn't it ???ย

Hi Gaby....I hope it gets better for you soon!!!! I feel for you not getting out as much as you would like. I am here in Canada and it is -27C today. I find it very challenging here as I am so cautious to slip. I wanted to tell you I played a game called Bejewelled ALOT! Passed the time for me that is for sure. Hopefully your knee starts to heal soon!!!!! I send well wishes!
