weight and appetite

I've been on 50mg for around 10 weeks now. I have noticed that my appetite has gone through the roof and I am constantly hungry and eating. The weight is fast piling on. Has anyone else had the same issue?

Hi Shay. I have been on for 6 weeks with no positive effects and I don't have any appetite. It is kind of scary, I go an entire day and remember when going to bed that hey I haven't eaten today. How early did you start to feel the positive effects? I am going to carry out this regiment until 8 weeks and if I don't have any success I have got to try something else probably not another SSRI for I seems not to have any success in the class.

I was the same for the first 7 weeks. I forced myself to eat because I knew I had to. Then....I've gone from one extreme to the other! I lost a stone to start with and now the stone is back on and it's going to keep going back on. I've become obsessed with food, it's rediculous. Maybe it's not the meds? Who knows. Maybe this is who I am but I've been down for so long my appetite was less

But do you feel on this medicine for that is most important to me for I can exercise or take diet pills if I start gaining weight, I just want this depression to lift.

The medication has massively helped with my depression and anxiety. I'm not going to go down the route of diet pills. Think I'd rather be larger than do that. I do hope these work for you. Took time with me but I'm finally happy and anxious free

Hi Shay one last question, at what week did you start to feel better since it had been 7 weeks in total? I am so patiently awaiting for a glimmer of hope. Blessings to you !

Hi Lattifa. When does your doctor planning on upping your dose to the therapeutic level of 100 mg?

I'm seeing her on the 17th, that will be 6 weeks I didn't know 100mg was the therapeutic level?

I'd say I started to relax from week 7. I noticed there were certain situations I would usually panic and nothing happened. I feel like I have my life back. I'm sticking at 50mg as seems to be working. I felt awful the first few weeks but feel good now and hope it continues

Yes I seem to be ok at 50mg so far, anxiety still there a bit, but I hope like you will go soon?

      God willing

I have been on 50mgs for 18 months, works well I've never had to increase. I'd say everyone has their own maintainence dose, mine is 50 mgs.

i was the same lost my appetite initially, now I'm about half a stone over what I would normally be but happy,

its not not a one size fits all, good luck

Hi Tezes. Do you remember at what point you felt better as far as what week?

It could take up to 3 months to get the full effects of the medication. 8 weeks at the least. SSRI's are slow, not because of the medication, but because you're body takes a long time to understand what to do. Not sure what you know about SSRI's, but they basically work by slowing down the process of your brain removing serotonin. Serotonin travels through the synapses and when your body thinks there is enough, it removes some of that serotonin and flushes it out. Unfortunately, for people with anxiety and depression, our bodies tend to remove too much of that serotonin, which our brain needs to properly function. The SSRI's tell the brain to stop taking that "excess" serotonin out, but it takes quite a bit of time for our brains to completely catch on. You're changing the very chemistry of your brain and changing the way it naturally does something. Be patient, give it more than 8 weeks, and you should start to feel better. Also, make sure you try your hardest to keep a positive attitude during this process. It will make this easier and more bearable if you try to focus on the positive.

You may need to up your dose or try a different medication.
