Weight Gain After Thyroid Removal

Posted , 36 users are following.

I am due to have my Thyroid removed in the next couple of months and have been told i will be prescribed Thyroxene afterwards. I have recently searched the internet for more info and have repeatedly come across horror stories of people gaining lots of weight. The specialist and surgeon i spoke to did mention some weight gain is possible until the correct doseage is found. Is it true that i will not be able to control my weight gain after the op even though i will be on Thyroxene

Have you been tested for Celiac disease?  It is an autoimmune disease and causes damage to your intestines if you eat gluten.  If you have it and are eating things with gluten you will lose weight and become malnourished, and continue to get sicker until you stop.  As thyroid disease is also an autoimmune disease, it is not uncommon if a person has one to also have the other. (I have both).  I was never really underweight (I think mine was discovered in the early stages), but as soon as I stopped eating gluten I gained about 10 lbs - ugh!  But, I am definately healthier and feel better.  I hope you feel and get better soon!

      Hi There,

I just had a full thyroidectomy and left neck dissection 5 weeks ago. I initially was looking for information regarding the numbness and choking feeling in my neck , left ear, and throat, but see lots of women complaining about weight gain . When did the gaining begin may I ask? I was put on thyroid med the night after surgery and I don't see my Endocrinologist until the 23 of this month.

My weight began in the summer months I had my surgery in February 17,2016 I made a year already! But after I had my surgery in February, I began to notice that my clothing wasn't fitting me anymore this started June, july, august and September is when I realized I had gained 40 pounds I was 130 even after having to kids one is 17 and a 6 yr old I lost all the wait! Then I went to see the Endroconologist and he said it's not cancerous, but inlarged! He said do you want to come every 3 months and get a biopsy or just take it out! He never said to me that after the surgery I still had to see him every 3 months, or else I would never had done it! I cry every day! I don't eat much because I'm afraid of gaining more weight? I want to sue that ass for ruining my everything!

Prior to my surgery I was concerned with gaining weight once my thyroid was removed and researched what to eat once I became thyroid less / hypothyroidism. I changed my diet approximately 2 weeks prior to surgery and am mostly vegetarian with some meat mostly fruits and salads. Lots of raw almonds avocados apple sauce (unsweetened) fig Newtons and my one vice a Dr. pepper daily. I love to run but have only been able.to walk since surgery and the way my neck/throat feels.

Hi there. I'm doing well so far. Immediately following surgery I was put on 25mcg Liothyronine but was seen by the endocrinologist last week and was switched to 112mcg levothyroxine. So far so good. I will be having the RAI treatment end of May beginning of June. I am an avid runner and have watched my food intake so far. Still very concerned with weight gain based on all these horror stories. My neck is still very numb with swelling inside near the throat feels like I'm being g choked scar is healing nicely. How are you?

Hi there. Sorry for the delay in response I was unable to login and couldn't get a password reset forever! Thank yo for checking back in on my progress. I am doing well. Haven't gained any weight but do exercise on a regular basis and eat what in limited amounts. Had my RAI almost a month ago. All went well just some residual radiation burns in my nostrils. My running is good most days but there are a few when I can tell I don't have the energy to go to far to fast so I will walk to get the distance and exercise. For me I think we need to be mentally strong and just keep up the same life style we had prior to surgery.

I'm only 17 and I found out I had a overactive thyroid with graves disease when I was 15, when I first discovered I had something wrong with me with in 4/5 months I had dropped 3stone like it was nothing and I could eat what I wanted without even putting a single pound back on, after I had full thyroid removal surgery I was placed on 150mg of levelthyroxine.. not that I feel like it's ever worked for me since I still feel weak tired and most all I got depression of how long I could sleep for which isolated me from my friends, a year after my surgery I started feeling okay for a while eatting right dieting when I needed to and every 2 weeks I'd go to the gym 4 times considering I didn't need to, and after being okay for a while I started gaining weight I couldn't say how much I've gained but I can say it's not loads but a lot, as I'm not in charge of My dosage since its under the age of 18 I have to have My parents around me my doctor told me a few weeks ago if your dosage isn't correct for youre body you're could gain thing which is why it's important to sort you dosage out properly before taking t3 or anything to help speed up weigh gain or loss.
