Weight Gain After Thyroid Removal

Posted , 36 users are following.

I am due to have my Thyroid removed in the next couple of months and have been told i will be prescribed Thyroxene afterwards. I have recently searched the internet for more info and have repeatedly come across horror stories of people gaining lots of weight. The specialist and surgeon i spoke to did mention some weight gain is possible until the correct doseage is found. Is it true that i will not be able to control my weight gain after the op even though i will be on Thyroxene

Hi I had my thyroid removed on January 17 2017 because like you I had papillary carcinoma on the left side of my thyroid.  I  take 88mcg of Levothyroxine.  I am unsure of how or why doctors select certain doses but I did mention my fear of gaining weight.  I have to do some more research online and then ask my doctor when I see her in a few months.  Also like you I feel tired too but I don't know if it's only my lack of a thyroid or my Multiple Sclerois too?

Hi Anita, I am not sure about the meds your doctor has you on. This is the fist time I have heard of this med after a complete Thyroidectomy.

Hi i felt the same way you did but as I read different patient accounts I believe it depends on each of us individually.  I can't expect not gain weight if I have a bad diet or don't do some exercise (even a litle bit helps).  Of course the thyroid medication also plays a role so I encourage everyone to educate yourself as much as possible, bug the doctor and pray (I always ask God for help smile

Looking for any info that may help with reducing weight gain after thyroidectomy. I had a partial thyroidectomy 20 years ago. They took the left lobe due to a goiter. I had six children afterwards and never needed medication or had any issues with weight gain or tiredness. Just a normal life. Then at age 38 I got pregnant with my seventh child. In 8 weeks I gained over 40 lbs. For the first time I had to start thyroid medicine. During my pregnancy they also identified a 2.5 cm mass growing on what's left of my thyroid. Life went on and I continued to take thyroid meds. I moved from 25mcg when it all started to 125mcg for the last year. I lost all the weight and went back to size 2 my normal size. This last September I started to put on weight. I increased my exercise and decreased my carb intake. Nothing has helped. Nine months later I was weighing 143. I went in to get things checked out they said my mass had to come out because it was measuring 8cm. So 4 days ago they removed the rest of my thyroid with the mass. I was sent home day surgery with a follow up appointment in three weeks. I'm freaking out because I wasn't sent home with any medication increase. I'm wondering how much my levels will fall in three weeks time? How much weight will I gain? I have yet to find any info on weight gain the first few weeks. I'm all ready heavier but I'm pretty sure that's just from surgery. I weighed 143 on my scale morning of surgery. Two days later when I stepped back on my scale it says 155. I would really just like to get ahead of this before my levels get out of control. I'm thinking I'm gonna go see my pcp tomorrow and explain the surgeon won't see me till the 26th. What's even lovelier is my actual endo won't see me till August 15th. That's just crazy to me!!!

    Hi Anita,

I was 70 kg (11 stone) when I had most of my thyroid removed at 34 years old ( I am 5ft 9 so tall).

    Now I am 96 kg-26 years later-that’s 26 kg heavier.

I have put on 6 kg in the past 2years dud to menopause/age.

My thtroxine dose isat the upper end of the range (800mcg a week) so it ismore than adequate.

I eat no carbs at night & lowcarbs during the day.

Current dietary intake is @1000-1200a day max.

    I walk alit-at least anhr a day.

    No joy.

    Don’t let doctors fool you!

Watch what you eat from the day hou have surgery. I was ever told anything!

Lesson learned. Do your own research.

Doctors don’t really care if you put on weight. ‘As lng as you are healthy’  is the standard reply.

Protein shakes are nowmy only recourse...& becoming my life.

    Be warned!
