What are some good questions to ask my Uro Doc.?

Hello again everyone.  This last week I have put some concerns out there in regards to Urolift that's not doing anything and it was only 9 months ago with 5 devices, urine retention, lower back pain, etc.

I have an appt on Friday the 22nd (2 days out) and I am putting my feelers out there for some good questions I should ask him.

Re: X-rays to see my implants, creatine levels, current size of prostate,  other options avail. ??    And I know some of you have been through hell and back.  I learned along time ago that wisdom is only good if you use it!

I recommend a HoLEP procedure if that's at all possible. Had mine 5 weeks ago and am now back to normal, flow rate like a horse, and no pain or discomfort. Only one thing different to before and that's RE. But a small price to pay for a 74 year old..

      Thank you John.

I did watch a video and did some reading and it sounds like the holep could definitely be an option.   Other than the RE it sounds to be an effective method.

Is HoLEP covered by Medicare? It appears not to be and that would be a major problem for some.

My insurance policy covered most of the costs in the UK, but the HoLEP procedure can cost anything between £7-12k here, depending on consultant charges, size of prostate, and length of procedure and days in hospital.

Thank you for the reply. Besides the cost there are few providers here in the USA. In case you are not familiar with Medicare, it is our government administered health insurance for those 65+. It is my primary coverage. I am slated for a surgical procedure in June (suprapubic prostatectomy via robot assistance) and expect that to be the end of my BPH problem. There are other procedures in the works but years away from approval, so for those who can wait there is hope.

Prostate volume 120ml is too large for TURP procedure per my Uro and I trust his advise.

I had very sucessful Thulium/Holmium laser surgery for my 135 gram prostate three years ago.He took away about 85 grams of tissue. Find another urologist.

In your about me you mention brownish semen. That is usually from old blood. Did you bleed much after the TUMP? Now that is an old discredited procedure from the early 90's.

Ask your uro what he would do if he personally had the same problem as you. If he says TURP go elsewhere and ask the same question.

OK Lester I will ask him.  So for you a TURP is something to stay away from.   Which is what I am gathering from others.  It kind of sounds like the Holep and TURP are very similar.

TURP, Holep, and Green Light Laser are similar with variations. It's the recovery period that's bad.

When I had my Urolift done in December 2015, the doc said it would take 4 months to stabilize.  Nine months seems WAY to long to me!  If you have chronic urine retension, you should be cathing to reduce the likeihood of problems with the kidneys, according to both my uro-docs.  Are you cathing now; is that how you know you are "in retention?"

      Cartoon an,

No I am not catching.   My Uro and I both know that after I feel like I have completly voided, the bladder scan still shows approx. 300-350 cc left in bladder.   However in the past 2-3 months I have been having lower back pain consistently.  And I have noticed that my urine stream is slow and doesn't last too long,   So it's got to be going somewhere.   I will def. be getting a bladder scan on Friday to see if the amount I am retaining has increased or not.    Have you done the self cathing?

I started self-cathing in August of 2014, after refusing TURP.  I cathed over 2,000 times, before having the Urolift in Dec.  I have a permanently stretched bladder that can retain over 500cc without complaining.  That's why I was advised to continue cathing, which I did once each day at bedtime for four months.  I recently switched to 2 X each day, after finding retention of up to 500cc at midday.  I use hydrophilic ("pre-lubed") SpeediCaths, which I find simple and 100% reliable, which is better than I can say for my own plumbing!  :-D   Other than than I pee with anything form normal volume to just a trickle, depending on who-knows-what?!  :-)
