What does a diverticulitis flare up feel like after a bowel resection?

Posted , 7 users are following.

I had a bowel resection done five weeks ago. (Removed my small colon.) I have been healing very well but yesterday I started having a nagging discomfort on the left side of my lower belly. It is not a throbbing pain and i do not have a fever. Also, if I lay still it doesn't seem to bother me.

When i had diverticulitis in the past my pain was mostly in my lower back on the left side and lower left abdomen and the pain was a constant throbbing. This discomfort is up higher.

Does what I am experiencing sound like a flare up? To anyone who has had a bowel resection and then a flare up, what did /does it feel like?

I have lost so much weight I really do not want to go back on liquids unless it is necessary. I am struggling to put weight back on.

Thank you for your help.

SUPPOSEDLY it's rare, only about 10% of people have flare ups after a resection. I have had 3 since June, nothing at all compared to the ones prior to my surgery. Maybe you overdid something you weren't supposed to be doing yet? You still should be careful with your diet, I waited 8 weeks before trying more "normal " foods. I only knew it was a flare up because of the nausea (which is much different from the flu).

Thank you for your reply. I am hoping this is not a flare up. I have been up most of the night . Pain is not any worse or any better. l am going to see my doctor tomorrow to be sure. If this is a flare it is mild compared to my per surgery. Have you had to go back on meds for your flares? I don't do well on them at all and fear the thought of going through that again.

Only the 1 time. The other 2 I was able to divert the inflammation by going on bland soft foods for a couple days. My trigger is stress. Keep in mind, your body has gone through a lot and is still healing. Resection surgery is major.

Thank you for responding. I am sure hoping this passes. Up until this developed I had been feeling so good.

I had the resection October 31st. I had pain in that area and around my surgery incisions. My surgeon said that was normal and could have some discomfort up to 3 months. The resection cuts out the area of diverticulitis so you should not have any attacks. I've had 2 post op visits with my surgeon and will go back again in 3 months for another check up. When i left the hospital i ask what i should eat and he said your cured you can eat what ever you want. i did take it slow because i was little nervous. If you have concerns check with your doctor. I feel great and happy to have my life back to normal. God is good!

Thank you for your reply. I went to see my doctor this morning she also thinks it could be inflammation in my belly. They did do blood work to look for infection. Still no fever. I wont get the results until Monday.

I was also told i could eat anything. I did take it slow at first but recently have tried to add some more fiber. Sure praying this does pass and it is not a flare.

And yes I agree, God is good!

Hullo all, my resection is Feb 10th. I'm a chronic diverticulitis bloke. My discomfort is constant. I've been in Augmentin for two bloody months! What £h*te that is🤬. I too have been told I'll be disease free after this.

That is wonderful! Recovering from the surgery is a lot easier then recovering from a flare. You will be so much better after your surgery. I wish you a speedy recovery so you can get on with your life.

I have pockets on my entire colon so for me a recurrence is possible. Best wishes for you and God Bless!

Let us know how your getting along. I'll be sending prayers your way.

Right there with you - My surgery was on Dec. 4. I have on and off discomfort but mainly they are around the incision and come and go so I'm hoping it is just still the healing process. Kinda worries me b/c I am like you - have diverticuli other places in my colon so it could happen, although surgeon said very low percentage chance. I think we are probably over aware of every little pain. I lost a lot of weight, too, and really working on gaining some back. So glad I had the surgery - I am finally eating things I haven't been able to eat in a couple years. Going slow on spicy and fried, but have slowly added spinach salad and some desserts. Hope all works out well for you.

Dee, thank you for your response. I am feeling better but I am still concerned. The pain/ discomfort I was having was to the left of my incision. The nagging feeling has stopped and now just feels sore. I'm also feeling a slight discomfort in my back at times. Which is where I felt most of my diverticulitis pain before my surgery but had not been feeling until this. Maybe as you say I'm just noticing everything more now. I go back to my surgeon the first of Feb. maybe he will have an explanation. I am 66 years old. This all started for me at the end of Sept. when I had a severe diverticulitis attack and allergic reactions to the meds. and it has really taken a toll on me. I am glad I had the surgery as I have been doing so much better. I had started eating so much better and had gained two pounds but with this set back I'm back to square one with the weight gain. I'm 5 ft. 7 " and 110 Lbs. My normal weight was 120. I wish you all the best .

Our stories continue to be so similar! I am 76 - 5'6 and now weigh 115 - normal 125. Gained about 3 lb. I am still having trouble having regular BM - went out to eat today for the first time and ate way more than normal (and a lettuce salad) and had diarrhea about as soon as I got home. Kinda discouraging. I need to remember my colon is quite a bit shorter than before. Prayers for both of us.

Our stories really are similar! I thank you for your prayers. I'll be praying for you too. I hope you will let me know how you are getting alone. I'm glad you got to go out for dinner. I know it will take some getting our systems working normally or maybe getting use to our new normal. Do you take a probiotic? If not that may help with the BM's . This evening my soreness seems to be gone. Praise the good Lord! Just going to take it one day at a time and pray it doesn't come back.

So thankful for you that the pain has eased - or disappeared! So hope it stays gone! Yes, let's stay in touch - I think the more we can relate to someone going through the same thing the better! Look forward to hearing you had a great report from your surgeon in February. Did some retail therapy this morning - so I'm feeling good (my bank account maybe not so much) 😃

How was the first BM after the surgery? Bloody, or normal? What pain meds did they give you for home use? I know they won't be giving me dilaudid. Any advice is appreciated lads/lasses.

I'm not Abby, but I can respond to your question. My very first BM was almost all liquid and did have blood in it. Liquid stools continued for about 3 days - then gradually got better. Never had blood in them after first one. I never took anything but tylenol after the surgery. I think there was something in iv, but pain was definitely not as bad as I anticipated. I had NO gas pain which everyone said would be bad. My surgeon had the reputation of really working to get as much gas out before he totally ended the surgery. He did an excellent job! Any other questions, I'll be glad to try and answer. Overall - surgery not nearly as bad as I thought, and very very much worth it so far!

Cheers for the response mate. I've had ankle surgery after a compound fracture, obviously had to go under. My question is this...were you scared? My anxiety over this surgery is sky high. I know I must do it as my daily life is hampered by this. They knocked me out for the 1.5 hour scope I had on Dec 18th. I remember thinking thank f**k I woke up. I'm probably stressing over nothing, but I'd like to hear your feelings pal.

Hi Jacob, My first bowel movement did have blood in it. I think that is almost expected. When I went back to see my surgeon after two weeks I was still seeing blood. He said that was no cause for alarm at that point. He said it was most likely a hemorrhoid. I believe he was correct. After my third week I have not seen any more. I was in the hospital for four days and took pain meds there . When I left the hospital they gave me Oxycodone but I never had the need to take them. I have taken Tylenol on occasion.

Jacob, Try not to stress over your surgery. Easy to say, I know. You will do great. Your surgery may not last as long as your scope. My surgery was about an hour. It is natural to be scared before any surgery and yes I did have my fears. You are not alone. In the end I am glad I had it. I believe you will be also.

Thank you for the kind words. I suppose the weirdest thing about the surgery is the way you wake up...and that feeling you just lost hours of time but it feels like only a moment. I'll heed your words. It is what it is I reckon, Que Sera Sera, etc.

I'll be thinking of you on the 10th. and sending prayers your way. If you like send us an update. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

      Cheers matey👍🏻.

Also, this is for everyone...What method did you go with? My surgery is scheduled with the Xi robot.

Mine was laproscopic which I think is similar to robotic. Either is definitely preferable to the open surgery - that is one main reason to get it done in a non-emergency setting. Recovery is much quicker and easier with laproscopic/robotic. Best to you on your upcoming surgery. Seriously, don't be afraid, it is not that bad!!

Mine was a non emergency but it was an open surgery as the surgeon thought he may need to take my fallopian tube because it became inflamed when I had my abscess. Fortunately, that had healed and he said my tubes were good. My incision is probably about six inches long. It took about two weeks for the tape to fall off and by that time it had healed. I know no other way but even being opened was not too bad. Except when I coughed. lol

That's pretty much how long my main scar was, and same time to heal. I had my ovaries and tubes removed the first of August, and some of the cuts were close to the same place! For someone who had never had surgery except for tonsillectomy when I was 3, I couldnt believe I had two major surgeries in 4 months.

That is a lot to go through in such a short period of time! I had a tubal done when I was 30 . That was my only surgery until this one. I have been blessed with good health up until this happened. I'm hoping this is just a bump in the road.
