What else is painful besides your knee

I'm bone on bone right knee on the inside of the joint but feeling sore and stiff at the top of the tibia/calf too.
Now the left knee has decided it wants some action and its getting stiff at the rear of my knee and the same calf/tibia problems.
Are these other problems to be expected with knee pain? I had a hip replacement 11 years ago and suffered from sciatica and other back problems but cycling kept me fit and help keep the back problems away. Now cycling is out of the question as it hurts the left knee.

I'm bone on bone on the inside of my knees, had to give up cycling 10 years ago due to pain and stiffness. I had a left knee replacement 4 months ago and will need the right done at some point. I've had pain on the outside of my knee before and after plus calf pain for a few weeks following surgery. It's been suggested that it's Iliotibial band syndrome that cyclists and runners can be prone to, but can also be due to knock knees, or wearing out the inside of the knee., as it causes the band to shorten. The IT band runs from the pelvis over the hip,and knee to,the tibia. I've been doing exercises and stretches that have helped. You can google it for symptoms, exercises etc, so might be worth a look.

Lynda, thanks for the reply. I was wondering what the effect of the inside of my knee being worn would have on my gait and the problems with my calf. I've had problems with my ITB in the past too.
Thank you

Here ya go...
Other Pain
Everything is interconnected and our bodies subconsciously shift our weight to avoid pain. That's why we get things like sciatica after an op...our hips go out of alignment from the shift. Hope this helps.

Cheers Chico, very reassuring reading that and i experienced the ancillary pain before and after my hip replacement.
Before my hip operation i continued cycling right up till the day before and apart from my hip, both legs were strong and i was told the cycling had helped.
I'm 11 years older now, hardly any cycling, a lot less walking and obviously less muscles in the legs.
I'm not very optimistic about a knee replacement at all.

Take a look at COOLIEF. FDA approved. Just had it done for some hip pain that did not respond to meds or chiropractic. Totally successful. Lots of good results on osteoarthritic knees too. The doc said that he has people coming back every 2-3 years for a repeat procedure to put off a TKR as long as they can. I have a left TKR but my right will need one sooner or later. I fully intend to use COOLIEF on that right knee. Check their website to locate a doc near you. I had a lot of luck with SynVisc for years but I'm beyond that stage now so COOLIEF will be my option before I get a second TKR...last resort.

Sorry but looks like you are needing a new knee! When in pain we walk etc differently without knowing and this can put strain on other areas , I found my lower back was the worst after my knee replacement . I have had both knees done, first was due to injury , but instead of getting it done immediately I put if off for couple of years , this caused strain on good knee and 7 years later had to get that done. This time as soon as it stopped me wanting to walk I didnt hesitate , although I knew what I was up for the end result is worth it. I was lucky because although initially I had a lot of pain it went at about 8 weeks and havent had any real pain since .Good luck

How far could you walk when you had your first knee and on what sort of surfaces??
I had an arthroscopy in 2014 which worked for all of a month till i went back to work, stood up all shift.
I could still walk for a few hours in the hills uptil last year but now it's out of the question.
I'm going to retire this year at some stage and then press for a replacement.
Has anyone the pain and stiffness at the rear of the knee which I'm experiencing with my 'better' knee?

I also had an arthroscopy on my first knee it was awful , extremely painful and didnt work, the pain at rear of knee is caused by knee being worn out , maybe a cyst , had it too. I can walk on any surface now, and could after first knee , my second knee lasted but was getting worse , I walked on beach a lot and that didnt help as quite a slope. Had two different surgeons , the second is neater but new methods and used glue instead of staples . I was 59 for first op and 65 for latest . I could walk any distance really on knee , no problem climbing hills etc but fitness more if an issue than how knee held up . I was lucky both times had good surgeons and had no real problems after about 8 weeks , didnt really take pain meds after that except panadol osteo more for lower back pain. You will find you will be able to walk where you want after op , but of course everyones different and not all get over op as well as others .

Thanks for the reply Jenny. At first i thought the arthroscopy had worked so much so that i ordered new Saucony running shoes while lying on the hospital bed.
I could walk 3 or 4 miles the day after and had a bit of a trot after 3 weeks immediately i went back to work that was it.
I'm encouraging that you got back into walking relatively easily and on different surfaces. The surgeon had originally said only the inside of my knee was worn out and a partial would work so I'll have to see.
The other knee where the pain is at the rear sounds shot too.
How long did you put up with the pain in your knees for?
