What gives meaning to your life?

Posted , 6 users are following.

Sometimes when we're seriously ill we can get very low and depressed. It happened to me recently and I lost sight, for a while, of what gives meaning to my life. Reasons I want to stay alive are important to me, as well as simply wanting to live, and they give me hope of recovery.

I have several meaningful things in my life, my son first of course, but for me personally it's studying for a degree. It keeps me motivated and gives me something to aim for, I could get work from home when I get it and I enjoy studying, it keeps my brain active and interested.

What's an important meaning in your life that keeps you going?

Hello Georgia, I am glad that you have found some meaning in your life. Keeping the brain active is a great way to learn, i am partially disabled and i do online courses to keep my brain active. I like to learn new things and doing these courses are free and from the comfort of my home. My main important meaning in my life thou as to be my grandchildren as well as my daughters. My grandchildren are 3 and 1 and i love being with them and seeing them grow and develope their learning. They bring great joy and their innocence is so refreshing. I do worry sometimes about the world we live in and that their innocence will not last, i want to protect them from evil but this is not possible. So on a positive note i will always be there for them while i can.

I haven't got any grandchildren yet but I have a son so perhaps one day; they must be delightful to you. razz

I do free online courses too when I'm inbetween modules. I study Alison courses, it's great that they're free and they have so many courses! And you can get certificates for a fairly low price though I haven't yet.

Who do you study with? Might be courses I haven't heard of. Oh and there's Vision2learn where the courses are studied from home with local collage tutors. I've several of those.

Hi Georgia, I do the Future learn courses. They do a range of courses, i have done Forensic Science, Forensic Physchology, Drugs and the Times of Richard 111 to name a few. I mainly do courses for interest but there are courses to help with your job prospects etc. Courses last approx 6 - 8 wks for about 4-6 hrs a week. They are not degrees but you can get a participation certificate for £25. These courses keep me going as i am not able to work. I will look into the ones you have mentioned.

Thanks, I'll look into that one, sounds good. I also do them for interest but also to improve my chances of gettting some kind of work from home, or if I get better something else.

Future learn looks excellent! Owned by the OU, who I study with. I've signed up for a course on the brain starting in June just after I've finished my module, perfect, thanks! razz

      Hello Georgia,

It is so nice to see you back in here again.

Well the people that give me meaning in my life, have got to be first and foremost my beloved Husband Peter, we both found a deep love so late on in our lives,it is so very precious to us both. This followed so very very closely by my dear and loving family. My daughter, and her Husband,  My  Grandaughters and their Husband`s,my four Grandchildren ,and my 6 Great Grandchildren .All of whom I love so very dearly ,always have and I always will.It is so important to me that all those I love dearly and deeply are well  aware of this ,and I have made it crystal clear to them all of this .And to all the newfound friends in here  my love goes out to you all .

This is what matters to me most of all .

I'm glad you have such a wonderful family Milly. What gives meaning to your life for you personally? I should have worded my post better because I'm interested in the things they do because even when we're ill, or especially I think we need goals and things to do to keep us active and our brains going etc.

Well until recently my Husband and I used to go sequence dancing ,I was always interested in ballroom dancing ,so when we met and both loved dancing that did it for me.Adde to that Georgia,I just used to love taking photos ,I still do no one is safe when I am around with my camera. But I tend mailny to read a lot even when feeling depressed I look to my books ,but I dont rwead fiction, al my books are factual books .I read a lot of health books and am into as it says in my dicsussion into holistic remedies. I was a fully qualified heaer for a lot of years till I moved around a lot ,that tended to stop me doing it ,Tha was my passion, giving people healing. It may seem odd to you that while I was able to do this for others ,I can still be depressed with things going on ,but we are not always able to give to ourselves that which we can give to others .

      Andre Privit......ha,ha. Great.

I do so much miss that pair of clowns, and then there was the breakfast scene set to the music of 'the stripper'. I can just hear it now.....#Da, da, da, de, da, da, daaa.....da, da, da, de, da, da , daaa ......Dum, de, dum, de, dum, dum, dum.......................' #

What ever they did was wonderous, especially the one with Shiley Bassey and 'the boot'...........

Such a great loss to society. I could go on and one, but would only bore the younger generation who believe that if there isn't a swear word in it, then it's a bad joke.

Yes, a totally different style of humour (if it is hunour). there was smutty humour but not not brought into the home. Panto had its share of smut but you had to go to get it. I think that made a difference. Still do not like pantomime. Perhaps I was old fashioned then. Perhaps I just like humour to be clever rather than risqué.

So you enjoyed the 'Fowacaowous'  and the 'dead parrot' jokes then too did you?

I have never been a fan of any obsenity being used to emphasis humour, neither to I like to see or hear any violence on the 'box' or elsewhere.

I think that maybe makes us antiques George?

I'd have to hide from you because I don't like having my photo taken! Probably because of my mum always forcing us to have them taken. She'd make us get changed and fuss around. We'd stand there for what seemed like ages with a false smile while she fiddled with the cameras! Put me off for life! lol

I'm a qualified Herbalist, well not with a university but with the BSY school. I know what you mean about healing others, I've done a little of that but it's harder to heal ourselves, though herbs do help me a great deal and I couldn't do without them.

What kinds of healing can you do?

    • Posted

Yes, Achemedes , I think I am glad to be an antque although I cannot claim a pedegree of some 2,500 years, nor have I invented screws or run excidetly dripping wet down the street forgetting even to wrap a towel round me. Ah well, we cannot all be antique and famous.

Ah yes George, but you can at least say 'there but for the grace of God go I'.

I qualified in Spirutal healing Georgia,it is hands on healing done within my then Church and also went to peoples homes and gave them it there.I also had a little room in my then home where I had people come to me for healing. They were fully clothed ,and it was hands on .and working ,as channels being given strong impressions of where to place our hands ,the impressions coming from the Lord .

I was a spiritualist for many years till the end of last years when something happend to make me take notice and I reverted back to my previous Christianity.

As I said I have done no healing for some years now due to moving around so much at the time.I went to my then local Church 4 times a week ,twice for the healing services, and twice for services .

I also took an aromatherpy course in Leeds where I was living at that time. Also crystal healing  too.

Well you maybe not get out of the way quick enough ,if with me ,as I have the knack of just getting the photo at the right time lol

Arrrggghhhh there was a flash in the corner of the room, was that you Milly?!!!

Great on the healing; perhaps you'll be able to get back into it one day. I've been learning about Aromatherapy and Crystals etc but I haven't done courses. I've done some distance healing and had results but I find that having ME really puts a damper on it because it takes concentration and energy. I do it prayerfully by the way.

Yes when we have something of a problem of our own to contend with it does make it that bit more difficult.

But it is well worth it when we get the wonderful feedback we get from those we have given healing to .

When people said to me thank you for the healing,My standard reply was always,I have not healed you ,I am only the channel through which the healing has come .The healing has come from our Lord .

Distant healing is equally effective,I used to do this via the computer at one time.

The person on the other end (on their computer) would place one hand on their computer ,I would plce one hand on mine, and just wait...with my eyes closed ....then when I was strongly impressed to do so I would open my eyes ,and relay on to the other person what it was they had to do. This believe it or not  Georgia did work.I got a lot of feed back from them ,and it was always good strong feedback .Telling me what it was they were feeling at the time .Maybe you could try this Georgia?I still have lots of my beautiful crystals, and I still use aromatherapy oils for myself .I do these things in conjunction with prayer too ,there is  always a prayer of protection before and a prayer of thanks afterwards.

I do it during prayerful meditation, or used to, I don't very often now. I believe you that it works while you're on the computer because the healing energy is everywhere and in it there's no time or distance.

I have lots of beautiful crystals and I can really feel their healing energy sometimes. I need to cleanse mine; I haven't done it for ages!

Should have said I make soap and put essential oils in it. I make it for myself and my mum's partner, Harry for his exzema and my skin itching, it really helps us both.

      Arch ~

Have you ever heard Keith Urban's version of "But for the Grace of God".  Makes me cry all the time when I listen to it.  It touches my heart at how pure it is.

Anyway, sorry, I bounced in on your discussion with someone else. smile

      Take care!

No, but I will look it up and that's a definite, and about bouncing-in - feel free - you are always welcome, that is from my perspective you are.

Yes Arch 'But for the grace of God go I'. 'Walk a mile in my shoes' before you judge me.
    • Posted

That is true, but it cuts in many different ways if you think about it.

Have you never been subconsciouly guilty of placing a judgement on someone, or are you perfect?

For example your neighbour, the man who irritates you so much, have you never made a judgement of him?

'Do not judge lest you be judged', and in any event how we can know that a judgement has taken place or in fact, how can you judge anyone who is always pulling your leg, as the goalposts are always moving?

I personally do not judge anyone, as I prefer them to do that for themelves, and in any event it is non of my business.

    • Posted

Yes I'm subconsiously guilty of judging you right now and also consciously!

      Because you judged me!

    • Posted

I'm not claiming to be a Samaritan, just a normal person.
    • Posted

You prefer people to judge themselves? What kind of hellish world are you from? Shouldn't people encourage themselves rather?
    • Posted

As a footnote I would say that Samaritans are just ordinary people who can and often do bleed the same colour blood as you do, have the same range of feelings as you, and breath the same air.

The main difference being that despite their often own despair they prefer to put to put that to one side and try to help others out of their hole of despair.

    • Posted

I am from a world where people should be able to encourage themselves but who often cannot.
    • Posted

I'm always encouraging people out of their holes of despair but sometimes I find it harder to encourage myself out of it!

It's easy helping others but helping oneself? Especially with such a disease as ME where your moods are severely affected.

    • Posted

Also I never tell anyone that people are worse off than them so they shouldn't feel so bad! I've never heard any Samaritan other than you suggest that.
    • Posted

In about an hour I'm going to visit my neighbours a few doors down who are old and sick but I'm not a Samaritan. Or am I?
