In the UK you can get coconut oil in a jar from Holland and Barrett stores - large jar quite expensive. Also from Waitrose, among their cooking oils - a smaller jar and cheaper. From Waitrose you can also buy a coconut baby massage oil - again a small white jar. Coconut oil is solid until about blood temperature. I used to put a bit in a sweetie paper case (the ones with crimped sides to make a cup) and put it in the microwave for a minute to melt because I didn't like the feel of solid fat in my mouth. I could tolerate the oil though. All these oils have coconut oil as the only ingredient.

I used it for at few weeks for "oil pulling" which is swishing it around your mouth to give relief from the pain and ulcers that go with erosive oral lichen planus. You spit it into kitchen paper for rubbish after 10-20 mins of rinsing.

An Emu is one of these big Australian birds, ah. Health Food or Nature stores usually have it.  Coconut oil can be used indeed for cooking as well.  Nature store or even supermarkets have it.  Shop around for best price.

Hi Shazmill I use Hydromol ointment on prescription in UK it looks like very thick Vaseline but you can wash down below with it cos when made wet it goes soapy then when rinsed and dried just apply neatly on affected area. Don't know the cost as I am pensioner and get for free but you can also get Hydromol Bath And Shower lotion.

Hi emu oil is expensive but many LS users use it. You can get it from pharnacies or online pharmacies.

Coconut oil is available online, at supernarket or health stores.  Extra Virgin Organic is best. Coconut oil has many benefits for all sorts of ailments and there is alot about coconut oil online and yes you can cook with it and is also good for the scalp and hair, many properties.

    Good luck.

The emu is a flightless bird that resembles a small ostrich. Emu oil is taken from the fat of this bird during processing. It is used to make medicine.

Emu oil is taken by mouth for improving cholesterol levels, as a source of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acids, for weight loss, and as a cough syrup for colds, H1N1 (swine) flu, and flu.

In veterinary practice, emu oil is used to reduce swelling in joints, prevent cracked or peeling paws, calm "hot spots," and reduce irritation of flea bites.

In manufacturing, emu oil is used to sharpen and oil industrial machinery, for polishing timber and leather, and for conditioning and waterproofing.

You can take this kind of oil by a reliable online site for better price.

    Hi Shazmill,

If you are in the UK you can buy Lucy Bees organic coconut oil from Sainsbury, apply it topically to the affected area, it is solid when taken out the jar but quickly liquifies on contact with skin and is very soothing.

I got Emu oil from Amazon, both oils are used to sooth the skin and moisturise especially after having a pee as urine can have a caustic effect on the skin with LS.

Hydromol or other emollients are very good for washing yourself with but can equally be used to moisturise. Never use soap or shower gels.

I sometimes mix a little emu oil with sudocrem which I find soothing and seems to cling to the skin longer. Think it's basically about trial and error and finding what works for you.

    Good luck.

Emu oil is well suited to human skin as it easily penetrates the outside layers and so is also useful, apart from moisturising, for carrying other applications well  into the skin. For this reason I personally don't use it on days when I will apply clobetasol ( just my own foible ) as we don't need to encourage strong steroid to penetrate too deeply.

Apparently it is good for lowering cholesterol it is claimed ( ? ) as contains omega 3, 6 and 9 though in what proportions i know not.

Does anybody here actually swallow it either alone or in cooking?

I think it's a great moisturiser for vulval area.

You make a good point re Emu oil penetrating deeply, Joodie.  According to Dr. Goldstein though, we do actually want the clobetasol to penetrate deeply as well do we not?  This is because the LS thickens our tissue.  We need to rub the clob into LS affected tissue after soaking to soften it so that the clob will get to the layers of tissue underneath.  At least that is what his webinar indicates.  So maybe the emu would be good to use before the clob application?

Hi Helen. Not me - aaargh!   I like to avoid

emu oil on steroid days and  my reasoning is that topical steroid medicine can be absorbed through the skin, which may cause steroid side effects throughout the body, including increasing the glucose levels in our blood or urine amongst other things.

Emu oil is claimed to penetrate all seven layers of our skin even as far as our joints and muscles and that sounds quite far in to me so I have to ask myself how far I want the clob to go in, bearing in mind how porous our bodies are.

For me it is "just far enough" to do its job, so I'm content with that.
