What painkillers are you taking?

I've been waiting for sixteen months to have bilateral full hip replacement with no bone marrow to soften my walk. My doctor is running out of suggestions because my options are limited. I'm currently on 500mg Codeine and 25 microgram fentanyl at the moment. They cannot increase the dosage because I have asthma. This means I also cannot take ibuprofen and am resistant to tramadol. Any suggestions please?

Sorry to hear you're waiting for your op. Please be careful. I've had 2 THR s, one 15 years ago and one 7 months ago. I also have asthma and have avoided ibuprofen, and didn't realise that codeine would also affect me. I was in so much pain 2 years ago, that I was persuaded to take codeine, and after a couple of months was taken seriously ill. This happened gradually, until one day I ended up in A&E with a blocked bowel, which then compressed my bladder and resulted in a UTI. I had to have a catheter for 4 weeks. It was really painful - and life threatening. Once I stopped taking the codeine I did return to normal, but the hip pain was again awful. I simply had to cope with paracetamol for 6 months until I had my 2nd THR. This went really well, but a warning - I'm also very sensitive to tramadol, which I was given after my op, which caused more problems. I've made sure the drugs I mustn't take are written on my medical records now! I really hope you get you op soon.

Hi have you been offered a morphine such as Zomorph , I have taken this now for 5 years , due to chronic pain . Hip and spine, hip revision and then a fracture of the screws used . i really believe no one should be in pain, I am not drugged up , it does not knock me out as its busy doing its job. I work part time . Zomorph slow release is better for me as others made me sick , its worth a go .

i feel for anyone with long term pain .

    hope this helps

sorry posted this on another comment within your post , just realised .

I hope your doing ok , is your wait for surgery long because of Covid ?
