Hi,im a 19 years old girl. Everything started two weeks ago(i think), when i cannot sleep because anxiety problems. But it got worse with time. When i lay down, i "wake up" in a panic attack phase.I have really poor dreams,i wake up every hour. I read some time ago about a disease called Fatal Insomnia- where the patient cannot sleep at all,had allucinations, dementia, stupor, coma and finally death. I have all the symptoms. I feel like a zombie,i started having light hallucinations, like visions and earing voices.Nobody believes me.Luckily i have my family with me,so they can take care of me when i will start be in the stupor phase. Now in Italy is 05:22 am, i woke up at four am in a panic state. What you would do if you have sporadic fatal insomnia? I mean, stay with your family, friends, tell people how much you loved them...things like that. Please, don't tell me i don't have it- i won't believe you.I only need to know what you would do if you had this condition, your considerations about this illness, etc.Sorry for my bad english,im italian.

Thanks for reading.

Hi Julia. When there's no obvious cause for persistent insomnia then I think it's down to low GABA, like daz84596 mentions. My own view is also this is the reason people fall asleep more easily if they consume alcohol or sleeping pills because they both increase GABA. Chronic long term stress and anxiety lower GABA.

Yep, but remember that alcohol and sleeping pills are not long term solutions for sleeping problems; in fact some might question the efficacy of using them even short term. Do note that an out-of-sync circadian rhythm can also cause sleeping issues; light therapy in the day can be used to reset this, or simply get more sun if you are in a country which has it year round 😃

Absolutely. Alcohol and sleeping pills are not a long term solution. Relaxation techniques help increase GABA but not everyone responds to it. Individual cases need to be investigated by sleep specialists if the insomnia is severe and persistent to see what treatments are available - possibly drugs that are used "off label" for insomnia.
