I've facing surgery in a week and have reservations.  Would like to know how others have recovered.

Hello all, I’ve read most responses & feel similarities. I am 44 & one week out from Robotic hysterectomy, rectocele & repair of my perineum. One of my biggest complaints is constantly feeling the need to have a BM even after I’ve had one. I’m assuming it’s just pressure on the healing areas but i sure hope this feeling goes away. I didn’t have any rectocele discomfort before my op but since i was getting a hysterectomy already & my Dr said rectocele repair i just said ok. I didn’t really grasp beforehand the discomfort & healing time i would need. I took 6 weeks off from my job in L&D where i am a CST & work 12 hour shifts. My other main complaint is the discomfort when i urinate, almost like a UTI. I’ve been taking AZO Standard for the weird sensation. I was put on an antibiotic the day after my op so I’m hoping if i have one this will clear it up. I’m hoping i just was not used to having a foley cath & am just still recovering from it. So anyone else have the same feeling of not being empty after a BM at this point in their recovery?

I had the same surgery and yes,I felt that way. Had to take a lot of stool softeners as well as Miralax and ducolax. I also switched to a soft diet. That helped me a lot.. It took a good 3 weeks to feel better. The first two weeks were hell.Get a urine culture to make sure you are on the right antibiotic. Might just be sore from Catheter.Good luck with your recovery. I can't believe I am 6 weeks out already. Be patient!

I can relate to your feeling of always having the need to have a BM ..Not sure why. Hopefully this will eventually go away. Also sometimes when I feel the urge to urinate I cant make it to the bathroom. This never happened before..I am 3 weeks post op.

I am 18 days post op from a midurethral sling and rectocele repair. I was told by my surgeon that I wouldn’t have a lot of pain afterward but I did for about a week. I found that the stool softeners quit working on maybe the 4th day so I would suggest not moving onto laxatives and just drink plenty of water & consume good fibrous foods. Constipation  is often an issue for several weeks post op. I got in the shower and massages my stomach to get things moving in week 2 and it actually worked! The medical assistant told me the only thing that can typically make the surgery fail is chronic constipation & if you had another child. Stay off your feet as much as possible. Silly me went outside because I was stir crazy on Day 10 and did some light yard work & I was so swollen for days!!! Use ice packs starting the second week and put pillows under your legs. I leave a frozen eye mask until it gets warm. I wish I was further along so I could tell you more!

I am three weeks out from a sacrospinous fixation. This also lifted my bladder so there was no need for an anterior repair. I had pain in my right buttock for about a week and a half. But what I am still experiencing is sort of a burning feeling, a pressure kind of feeling when I stand or walk. Not inside my vagina but around my pubic bone (don’t know how else to explain this). Does anyone recognize this? I also still need to urinate often during the day and off and on have an urge feeling. Will that all settle down?

My bladder did settle down but it took a couple months. I do remember the pressure you are describing. I think it just takes awhile for our bodies to bounce back.

You may be right. Just makes me wonder then why they expect you to be able to get back to work after six weeks.

I was not able to return to work full time for a few months. At 6 weeks I could only handle part time.

I  am about 7 weeks post op of hysterectomy, anterior posterior repair, etc..... I am having a lot of vaginal burning. Is this normal?  Anyone else having this issue?

I did have burning. I think it’s from the trauma of the surgery. It went away for me but I don’t remember how long after. I felt pretty beat up for a couple months.

I had a vaginal hysterectomy, with rectocele, and cystocele repair 5 weeks ago. The hardest part has been trying to rest and not do too much. I haven’t had pain, just a Strange week feeling in that area and the occasional itchy feeling on the inside, (must be the stitches). After a day of doing too much, the next day the feeling of weakness and itchiness are worse and I really worry that I have ruined the repair. I will not know until next week at my 6 week appointment. But after a day of feeling good yesterday and over doing it, I am resting today and very worried.

I spent the first couple of months terrified that everything that I did had wrecked it.  The dr told me to stop stressing - they stitch things up really well.  All the best for your healing.

I am so glad to have found this discussion group. I cried when I read some of the posts. I had a hysterectomy 6yrs ago and was back at work after 2 weeks. I am now 3wks post rectocele repair and no idea when I will be fit for work. The whole do nothing think is just not in me - yesterday I cleaned the bathroom and did 2 lots of ironing and was exhausted beyond belief by the evening. I then read the posts on this and realise I have really overdone it. Today I am resting completely. I agree with previous comments, because you cant see a wound it is very hard to recover properly. I was very lucky pain wise and stopped taking painkillers within a few days. I did need medical help for bowel movement - I went 5 days post op without going which was BAD! My main concern now is that I still have a pinky/yellowy smelly discharge after 3 weeks - is this normal?? Im not in pain just achy. This discharge is not as bad as the first few days but it just does not seem to be stopping. I am very concious of the smell.

Sounds like you were trying to do too much at three  weeks. I am almost 5 weeks after cystocele repair and still have slight discharge but not smelly. If you have pain also maybe check with GP in case you have an infection.

Wish you the very best with your recovery.  It takes quite awhile to recover from prolapse surgery.

Hi - now at 4 weeks. The discharge is definitely easing and less smelly. I think I just have a very sensitive nose! This discussion forum has been a godsend, so many women sharing their experience has been far more help than the medical profession has been. I think I have been very very lucky as I have had no pain at all since the first couple of days. The problem is still not to overdo it. At 4 weeks I sometimes forget that Ive even had surgery and end up overdoing it - this means a day of doing nothing (today!) The biggest worry is undoing the repair. I overdid it yesterday and today I feel scratchy and bulgy down there - the bulgy feeling worried me a lot as I wondered if I had damaged myself. However, reading other posts I have found that this is quite normal at 4-6 weeks so fingers crossed. (That "bulgy" feeling is internal only - after a careful external exam I found no evidence of bulge!!) Anyway, I have advised my work today that I will not be back for a while - my "i'll be back after 2 weeks" was way way to optimistic!!

Anyway, thanks girls and hope everyone is recovering well.
