When will they work

I've been on citalopram in the past before I felt they stopped working. not sure if this is the case now
been on 20mg for 4 weeks now and still not seeing improvements I feel worse than ever x everyone says to keep going and it will get better but feeling pretty hopeless
had a few ok days last week but they were far from great.
my depression is pretty bad even though my main problem is anxiety.
my anxiety is horrible it's making it really difficult to function. the only time I feel safe is when I'm in bed but I force myself to get up every day and do stuff bit it's so difficult
I see people improving already and I don't really see any x
feeling pretty hopeless and hoping for some reassurance x

all people respond to it differently , this is my second time around on them , im on week 8 of citalopram and i am feeling exactly the same as you , depression has kicked in, i have lost my job, my cars broke down , i feel a complete failure but i am just trying to take each day as a small step towards getting better, i have been in bed most of the week with zero appetite i honestly feel horrendous , we will get through this dont worry xx

sorry to hear things are going so bad for you too buddy x sounds like you are struggling a lot too 😓
I've lost my job too and can barely get out of bed some days
have you not seen any improvement at all since you started?

i have seen slight improvement yes but losing my job actually sent me backwards to worse than i was to start with , if it wasnt for the constant worry about work and bills i think i would have been well on the mend by now week 8 in total , i believed i needed this as a clean break from my last job i had held for over 10 years but then reality hit me like a brick , take each day as it comes mate and try keep busy how ever hard it seems , sounds daft coming from someone whos spent the last week or so in bed but it really does help to keep busy and your mind focussed on other things , i have set my goal to get better then get into helping others who are struggling weather in a professional job or just helping people in my spare time

I understand why that could definitely make you go backwards for sure! its situational though so should pass when it sinks in a little bit more and the shock of it passes x but it definitely just adds extra stress doesn't it.
I'm the same as when I'm feeling better I definitely want to come back and help as many people as I can for sure!
it's such a horrible illness and wouldn't wish it upon anybody
trying my best to keep busy but it's so hard to do when feeling so s**t and having no interest in anything at all

thats the depression i believe, it literally took me days to get the energy to wash my bedding even making a phone call to sort theropy and doctors seems like a massive mountain to climb , thats what puts fear in people on here , theres not many success storys so you only seem to see the negatives , i presume once most start getting back on track they just forget about this site, i honestly did the last time i was feeling a lot better , shame really as i know citalopram works wonders for a lot of people you just have to give it time and understand the side effects

have you considered increasing or are you gonna stick to the 20mg and try and ride it out?
do you think you will start to improve some more soon?
what do you normally do to take your mind of it all? is there anything that helps you distract yourself and keep busy? x

im going to ride it out on 20mg as recommended as a dose change can take up to 12 weeks to show effects , if i upped my dose i would be starting the side effects all over again , i think i maybe sensetive to them too so dont want to up to 30mg, 20 seems the most popular and effective

yeah I completely agree with that x I have toyed about with the idea of increasing but know deep down I wont because I think it's more of a placebo thinking something else might work when feeling so crap!
how long did it take you to get better first time buddy? x

what worries me is still feeling so crap at 4 weeks in and not seeing improvement is pretty scary isn't it x
gotta keep going I suppose

I tried them for 8 weeks didn't do anything apart from make my hair fall out but was only on 10mg . Think they seem to take while to kick in and got couple friends swear by them think case of giving it bit longer. The sertraline I'm now trying racking up the anxiety, only swapped because couldn't cope with hair loss! 20mg seems to be the theraputic dose for citalopram.

first time round was probs around 12 -15 weeks to start being fully myself again but me being silly when i couldnt get to to collect my prescription due to working away i just quit them but it came at bit me twice as bad 6 months later , its been a lot harder this time around , i get them thoughts mate just thinking they arent working and shall i up the dose or change med but then i will be back to square one with the side effects etc , i highly recommend sticking with the 20mg for at least 12 weeks before considering changing or upping dose

hi james i am seeing a psychiatrist now and he has given me low dose of lorazepam to take twice a day while we wait for the cit to kick in. It has helped. it doesnt get rid of the anxiety but takes the edge off and helps me to function

yeah definitely gotta stick with them for a while longer x I feel like it's getting worse every day not better. I've been on them before and they worked great. but this time round seems to be a completely different story. 😓
have you tried any others or just citalopram? x

i tried mirtazapine but they made me really really groggy the next day, great for sleep and a good appetite but it was really affecting my work at the time , basically the same as me then, i did read that 2nd time round can be worse

ive got a full pack and im in the uk going through bad citalopram withdrawal wont touch benzos with a bargepole just because one person doesnt get addicted doesnt mean another wont

i agree - was like you and totally resisted taking them but my psychiatrist convinced me. He said he uses them a lot with patients when starting ADs sometimes for 2-3 months and he said he tapers them off them and has never had any problems so i am finally listening to him and taking them and they are helping. As i said the low dose doesnt make the anxiety go away just takes the edge off so its more manageable.

remember good hours/days and bad hours/days - thats all part of the process. it dies sound like you have had some better days so there is some improvement. we just have to keep on plodding and think this too shall pass x

as long as you get them from a doctor and not the street is ok.and iam sure your doctor is not going to contribute to any type of addiction.
