Who is the best sugeon for fitting Ceramic Hip replacment?

I am seeking a surgeon who regularly fits Ceramic hips in to plastic or possibly ceramic cups and is GOOD!

I have an on-going nightmare with incompetant surgeons who do not believe I am allergic to nickel ( present in most metal hips such as the Exeter 316 style hip) and was delighted to discover a surgeon in Wiltshire who does fit these. I was then strongly warned by 2 people not to go to this man as most of his patients are wrecks when he has finished with them.

Frustrated? Moi?! Can anyone advise me?

I gather there is a Mr Latham in Southampton who is excellent but he is not even seeing anyone until Christmas 2014 and no time to operate on any new patients until JULY3015!

I cant even find out if he does Ceramic hips but i know he does fit Titanium Hips which i would be OK with.

Hi there.... I think that probably one of the top hip surgeons in europe, and certainly in the UK is Sarah Muirhead-Allwood. She operates privately having retired from the NHS a few years ago. I am nearly 4 weeks in from a ceramic on ceramic replacement with her (45 years old) and so far (touch wood!) all going to plan. She came highly recommended from 2 friends who she has operated on (one is his 40s and one in his 80s!). She replaced the Queen Mother's hip so she's extremely experienced and in many people's opinion, the best surgeon around. I had a failed hip arthoroscopy with another surgeon before I had my THR and everyone I met, literally everyone, said, if you can go to Sarah M-H, go straight to her. If you google her you will find the Hip Unit listed in London. It's not worth messing around with these things as I am sure you'll agree! Good luck with it all smile

Many thanks indeed. I had never heard of her but you certainly seemed impressed!  Thanks indeed. I am checking her out now!

I have now thoroughly checked her out! Very interesting. I have not had a reply yet from the team and have asked for prices of THR.

      Cheers!

Her fee is £2k and the anaesthetist is about £500, maybe a bit less. BUPA covered all the hospital bills and about £1200 of her fee and about £120 or so for anaethetist which wasnt great as they were not fee assured and we had to pay the rest. However, I had heard how good she was and hoped it would be worth it. 4 weeks in now, on 2 crutches as I have a short pin, so probably another 2 weeks before I can weight bear.

I have not had a reply back from this Surgeon to get a quote from the team and am surprised to see figures of £2,000 for surgery. I paid that to get 3 screws out of my hip!I guess the difference is the cost of staying in hospital. I stayed in for 1 night only and came home being told to fully weight bear or is it weight bare!?

I am speaking to people who talk about walking on crutches for 3-5 days post surgery and then being without crutches after a week or so.

Maybe a short pin means longer on crutches? I find it so confusing to choose the right person for me!

I believe my op including anaesthetic cost around £5000 then theres around £500 physio ..maybe theres a pricing war!!!

BUPA has covered all mine except the prescription for painkillers that I could have got free through my GP anyway!!

Yes short pin means no weight bearing, thus 2 crutches for a few weeks. I think we all catch up eventually though wink

Yes I think the extra cost would be in the hospital cost.. I didnt pay for this, but spent 4 nights in King Edward VII in Marylebone and BUPA paid direct

I had 3 nights in...appt  two weeks later for staples to be removed, 4 hydrotherapy sessions, 4 physio gym sessions , 6 weekly review...and its cost me £8! I think I had my moneys worth out of all the BUPA payments over the years!
