Whole body muscle weakness/atrophy on right side

Posted , 57 users are following.

My symptoms are below:

-Mid 2006- Felt right leg week when I am exercising. Felt right hand weak and fine tremor.

-Did all possible tests and MRI,EMG, everything normal in 2008.

-2006-2017 - I let it go and nothing was bothering.

-But meanwhile all the length I have observed that my right side of the body was little weak in terms of muscle strength and muscle mass.

-I could able to do all the things and can able to do even now.

-But now whole my right side has a little less mass, face, shoulders, trunk hip, glutes, thigh , leg and foot.

-Little that it is not yet innterfering in the daily activities.

-Concerned, I went to neurologist.

-EMG done and it is normal.

-Neuro ordered blood tests.

- midly elevated calcium, aldolase, liver enzymes, album and positive ANA with < 1:80.

-ANA is positive but titer is normal (< 1:80)

-Planning to meet the neuromuscular specialist next month.

-Connecting all dots together till now, I am just wondering what this condition might be?

Given that it is present from long time and I could function normally now with normal EMG, can ALS be ruled out?

Thought this could be polymyositis but I have the weakness and atrophy mosly on one side of the body.

Pleas let me know your thoughts

Hi I have the same but on the left side of my body, there's pain muscle twitching and then atrophy. It is from head to toe also left side. I am 31 and this started a couple of years ago in my leg but has now gone up my side down my arm shoulder back and face. I don't know what to do anymore

So sorry to hear this Tara. I feel the same way. Utterly exhausted, and pretty hopeless. Has anyone been tested fir autoimmune conditions?

    • Posted

I am all left side also Tara, my symptoms came on fast and have steadily declined especially the amount of muscle wasting. I am waiting on my spinal tap results, my nerve conduction test showed severe neuropathy in both left side extremities and they are leaning on a rare type of Genetic Parkinson's but I still think they are stumped.......

I believe I have the same situation. a year ago or more I noticed my left leg and arm muscles

seemed smaller than y right side. Today, as I was waking and since I have noticed my

left cheek, face, muscles are smaller , also. Have read most of the comments on this subject,

and no known cause of one side, atrophy.

will be checking n time to time.

Well I can say one thing is for sure...at least I don't feel all alone in what I'm going through anymore, and I have a lot of empathy for all of the people who have posted here! My prayers go out to each and everyone of you.

Secondly, I do hope that SOMEBODY on this forum, who has posted in the past, will see my comment and UPDATE US if you have had a doctor come up with the root cause for such a debilitating condition and the treatment to get our muscles back! PLEASE POST IF YOU DO have some information to share with all of us who are frustrated from not having an answer!

    BACKSTORY:

I am a single female, age 60, controlled type 2 diabetes & hypertension. All my life I have been an extrovert with high-energy, lots of joy, and very active with my main forms of exercise being dancing and hiking. Having short legs, I've always had to walk at a brisk pace to keep up with all my friends with longer legs. I know STRESS CAUSES ILLNESS, and unfortunately have had a lifetime of traumas that started even before I was born, so likely maybe this IS stress in my body (& yours perhaps?) which has been manifesting itself in various ways. (Now reading "The Healing Codes" by Alexander Loyd which speaks to this and came highly recommended from a dear friend who has had severe RA and just now starting to get better.)

    FAST FORWARD:

In April 2017, I tore my medial meniscus (right leg) but that wasn't diagnosed until the following year, and we were trying other methods for healing: leg braces, canes, PT, injections, etc, but nothing was helping. So, in July 2018 had a medial meniscus surgery, so of course I wasn't able to be as mobile as I had been so some muscle loss on my right leg would be normal as I was recovering. In August 2018, I had a slip&fall accident at Panera. I hit the ground with my left knee and my palms with my arms outstretched. This jarred something within my cervical & thoracic regions, so I started chiropractic & sports therapy massage treatments for the accident, while I was still going to PT for my leg. In October or November 2018 I started to notice weakness in my right arm and hand when I was just doing everyday functioning and grooming: I remember having to brush my teeth with my left hand and that I couldn't cut a potato with my right hand. Still I didn't SEE any difference and figured it was fatigued and tried to rest my right arm for a few days. I do remember though that I was starting to feel tingling underneath my armpit toward my wrist on occasion and was having a slight frozen shoulder in my right scapula, but chiropractic treatment was working on all of this successfully . (Unfortunately, I had to stop the chiropractic massage treatments when my accident case closed in December). As I am one that just "pushes past the pain," I really didn't pay much attention to my upper extremities cuz I was so focused on trying to heal my leg/ knee ...which still WASN'T HEALING by the way! So, in February this year (2019), I began SEEING THE ATROPHY on my right side! - First noticed the base of my thumb on my right hand looked on "deflated" in comparison to the left when I was holding my cell phone. Next, I looked at my forearm and where you could see muscle on the top of my left forearm it was completely flat on my right arm and the skin is so much looser. I THEN remembered the week before stepping out of the shower and noticing that my right breast looked significantly smaller than my left breast, which could account for the pectoral muscles diminishing. (I started to connect the dots!!) My trapezius on my right side, which was always larger than my left so much that I had to adjust my earrings to be shorter on that side to hang evenly, was now smaller than the left side. So in exploring my body, I was now realizing that even in my face on the right side there isn't as much muscle tone and it goes all the way down and into my leg which was not necessarily caused from ONLY disuse!

No longer able to just push past the pain, (now emotional pain, except for the knee) I saw atrophy from head to toe on the entire right side of my body seeming to increase at an alarming rate! So I went in for so many MRIs that I've lost count (cervical, shoulder, & brain), I've had nerve conduction studies/EMG on arm & leg, EKG & multiple blood tests... ALL NORMAL!! As good as it is to get no bad news, it's frustrating cuz I'm no further along and we still don't know what's causing this so we don't know how to fix it!

This condition HAS CHANGED MY LIFE so dramatically in very negative ways: I'm angry, I get depressed because my social life no longer exist since I can't do the things I used to do, I'm isolated because I'm on temporary disability, can't work & live alone , family in the area for support, my joy has been zapped, I'm overwhelmed by doctors appointments (to the point of sometimes SIX PER WEEK), and my body can't keep up with my internal energy level, so this is impacting me being ability to fall asleep at night at a decent hour. I was told NOT to exercise at all because it could damage something since we don't know what's going on. I'm still hoping to find a scholarship to a fitness center with a swimming pool so I could at least get my cardio working and my body moving.

I need my life back! I need my body back! I have so much to do left in this life, and I need to be able to function!! If ANYBODY has answers, please let me know as I'm meeting with my neurologist in a couple of days to figure out what's next. Please pray for me.

    First a short recap.

I have been experiencing unexplained weight and muscle mass loss since early 2018. I used to be around 150 lbs. and now I am 101 lbs.

Everything is gone! Boobs, butt, all of it!

    I am a skeleton.

I have been very frustrated with my doctor who has wasted at least the last year gaining no ground on isolating the cause.

No one seems to have any sense of urgency, and I know that if they were in my position they would be in a panic.

I changed my doctor because she was'nt quite as brilliant as she thought she was.

    I found another doctor.

He knows his stuff. For the first time I am hopeful that a recovery is possible.

    NEW DISCOVERIES!

As it turns out my gall bladder may have alot to do with my condition. It isnt cancerous but it is full of stones which can cause unexplained weight loss.

Its gonna have to come out!

We are waiting a little bit to go in and remove it.

This was an important discovery for me.

One that may tend to be over looked.

I hope this information is helpful.

wellwell I hope you feel better. I had my gallbladder out years ago, so I know that's not my condition. I hope you feel better and can live very well without your gallbladder. I don't even know what they're for! Blessings

    Hi Kristy

I hope you have found some answers since your last posting. You describe gradual weakening and thinning of soft tissue/muscle on your right - here's hoping that it has not progressed any.

I feel that my entire left side has thinned out and become somewhat weaker - most obviously in facial muscles and those of swallowing. As a result I have to cough up food to prevent choking on it - I also have dental changes where the incisors (maxillary) on the left side have moved outwards as a result presumably of muscle weakness - I'm a Dental Hygienist and have never seen this before in my 30 odd years, The muscle wasting has been acknowledged by a rheumatologist in the 90's and described as slight - at least an acknowledgement of sorts.

The incident I think that precipitated the change to my face (I realized later that my whole left side had thinned out) occurred in 1988 - I had fallen asleep on a sundeck with my face and left side pressed on the tiled surface. On awakening, I looked in the mirror of the swimming pool bathroom only to see that my face had drooped somewhat. I rather stupidly went to bed to rest and did not pursue any medical treatment. The change was subtle - only obvious sign was a 'bag' under my left eye and thinning around the cheek area.

Long story short - I had multiple tests - Bell's Palsy was suspected of course - steroid injected into left cheek area, virus on brain stem also postulated although the neurologist suggested it wasnt "screamingly obvious" - thanks for the compassionate stance I thought. One neurologist said " Have I seen it before - yes. Do I know what it is - no.

I have had to take care in buying clothes as they hang off my left side - it has a "straight down" look - shorts especially threaten to fall off the left hip and I can't wear a dress shirt without a tie as the collar simply flaps down due to wasting around my left shoulder muscles. My left leg is visibly thinner than the right (with more varicosities strangely) and my left foot arch has collapsed meaning that I have had to rely occasionally on supports in some shoes.

The subtle nature of these changes along with my active lifestyle - I still swim and bicycle regularly, have made me a non-entity from a medical standpoint which is upsetting to say the least. I feel pretty sure that I am not merely being treated as a body dysmorphic disorder case but it's close to it I fear..

Have recently considered plastic surgery to improve facial appearance but I fear it could look worse.

Thanks for listening - I dearly hope that your case is reaching some resolution - I am so many years into mine that it feels odd to still be dwelling on it but it's honestly very disquieting to look in the mirror and not recognize your face. The right side is unchanged but the left is rather haggard looking. It brings to mind an old Groucho joke - I never forget a face but in your case I'm willing to make an exception!

I wonder if it was related to low blood pressure and some kind of ischaemic condition - perhaps as a result of my heavy sleep on a hard surface. I'm sure I will never find out .

Very much hoping that you are doing well and feeling that your condition, like mine, hopefully, is not a progressive one. That doesn't of course detract from the strangeness of having one side functioning and appearing slightly differently from the other.... Good luck!

    Hey Kristy,

Very same issues. About 3 years ago, my then neurologist picked up on the fact that my right foot brevus muscle was missing on the top of my foot. He felt that it may have been caused

from wearing too tight of footwear.

Following that, I began to notice right foot thinning (atrophy) that soon, within a couple of months migrated to my right ankle. This was very obvious to me.

Within a couple of more months,

I noticed obvious atrophy to my right quad. Again, undeniable in view. I had another EMG done last year that showed some mild issues with a deep peronial nerve in my right ankle/foot. The neuro did not seem concerned at the time amd told me not to worry about it.

But now, more atrophy to include my foot, ankle, calf, quad, trunk oblique, forearm, tricep and face is all noticeable. Strength is not poor, but it is reduced on my entire right side.

Just had an MRI of the brain and spine that showed nothing remarkable. The neuro is scheduling a follow up EMG to look for changes.

I'm a 54 y/o male who has always worked out and been in decent but not super great shape. I fear the same nerve and muscles diseases as I believe everybody on this site does. I hate being dismissed by Docs thinking its no big deal and that I should just be living with it! HOPING you or somebody else on this site finds some definitive answers!

      hello @Steve55737

i have the exact same issues you describe. atrophy right side - right leg, right ankle, right calf, quad, right hand wrist thenar. not much on the right face as yet.

it is not screamingly obvious to others but atrophy s there on the entire right side. started about 3.5 years ago. I'm worried that this maybe ALS , especially since i have twitching too. im only 40 yo male.

any update from your EMG ?
