Why are my eyelids puffing up?

Posted , 11 users are following.

After 2 years of treatment for PMR  my eyelids arenow  puffing up and  reducing my field of vision and my eyes are now blurry and a bit teary for several hours after waking up. I am on 10 mg pred  and have gained a lot of weight..

I assume that this is fluid retention but why now and is there anything I can do about it?

Hi Ricky - I don't have an answer for you but I have the SAME problem after 3 yrs on Pred. I too am on 10 mg but have had this problem now for around a couple of months. I assumed it was the weight gain (puffy face). I went to the opthamologist and had another eye test and new glasses but to be honest it's not improved the blurry vision, mainly in one eye. I have an appointmnt with the eye specialist on 1 Feb so will discuss all possible scenarios with her. Happy to let you know the result of that visit if you are interested, but I am hoping there will be a few informative suggestions to your post in the next 24 hours. Sarah

Thank you.  Yes, I am definitely interested in hearing what your specialist has to say.

OK, will diarise to let you know. Already some positive responses below I see. I suspect it is all part and parcel of Pred but will find out from specialist what she thinks - she has been in the business a good few years, so hopefully will have some knowledge about steroids and vision. Hopefully by the time I see her, you will be 'sorted out'. Fingers crossed. Sarah

Have always had puffy eyes since being on pred, and blurred vision, when my eyes are tested they cannot find a problem...this I find the most difficult to deal with.....so I guess it`s a common problem when taking pred, or it`s the PMR.....

Hi, vision can also be affected by changes in your blood sugar. Unlikely to be the cause but if not checked for a while get your nurse to do a fasting blood sugar.

Hi Ricky I was diagnosed 2 years ago first with PMR and then with GCA. And vision went in right eye but so lucky it came back and had 3 episodes of this which was so frightening. But I have always had the blurred vision. But hadn't really been there in last couple of months. Because I started back driving again. I am down to 5mg. But pain back in thighs buthe not as bad as was before. And is bearable. Just don't want to increase pred. But maybe the fact that I dont have the blurred vision might be due to fact I'm down to 5mg. Hope this helps. Best of luck

so the blurred vision seems directly linked to the dosage.  that's encouraging.... thank you.

I have had GCA for seven years and a limited bout with PMR. On this last flare (80 mg. pred) I could hardly open my eyes. I'm down to 4 mg. and the swelling came down in my eyelids, not much in my body and face yet. My vision hasn't been clear since this began. I created cataracts which were removed but I still don't see as well as before. Maybe it's my age, 71, as well. Now that alot of the puffyness in my eyelids has reduced I find I have big bags under my eyes. I HATE them. Jan

Hi Jan don't tell me you had it for 7 years? I've had it for 2 years , started off with PMR was on 20mg and when I was reducing by doctors orders, I developed bad headaches and was admitted to hospital where they did a positive biopsy for GCA, I was on 60mg then, but week later I lost sight in right eye but it came back I had 3 episodes of this, my dose was increased to 80mg, I'm down to 5 with pains in my thighs and very stiff in mornings, but don't want to increase, but back to see rheumatologist on Thursday and bloods will be taken a day before, cause my CRP and ESR always reflect on pain I have, I wish you wellX

I  do understand - I can't bear to look at myself in the mirror!   But it is interesting that on 4 mg your eyelid puffiness went down.  That's encouraging.   Thank you.

I would ask your optometrist to check you for dry eye syndrome as well as other checks. Many people find that pred tends to cause puffiness in the face due to fluid retention - but there are other things as well and it doesn't have to be the pred.

The puffiness would not explain it but the runny eyes upon waking is an exact symptoms of dry eye syndrome. I would see your eye doctor for diagnosis. My eye doctor put me on 1100 mg of Omega-3 and that worked until I started prednisone and then I had to get off of it. After that my dry eye became a real problem again. Now I'm on Restasis and it seems to be solving the problem. But I'm only on day 4. Dry eye can cause visual problems as well. I can only see up close for about 5-10 minutes and then everything goes blurry. In addition it takes me as much as 10 minutes to adjust from one distance to another. Good luck one getting this worked out.

I will check this with the eye doctor.  I hadn't realised that runny eyes on waking is a symptom of dry eye syndrome. Thank you.

I wonder why you had to stop taking the Omega 3....  is it contraindicated with Prednisone?  Anyway, I just gulped down some Omega 3 ..... thanks :-)

Hello Amkoffee, wondering why pred and omega 3 don't agree?
