Why are my eyelids puffing up?

Posted , 11 users are following.

After 2 years of treatment for PMR  my eyelids arenow  puffing up and  reducing my field of vision and my eyes are now blurry and a bit teary for several hours after waking up. I am on 10 mg pred  and have gained a lot of weight..

I assume that this is fluid retention but why now and is there anything I can do about it?

Rick, so sorry you're having this trouble with your eyes. I too had blurry vision and got my eyes tested. The optometrist side in was caused by the steroids and would probably go as I get down or off them but added that it may not!! Not sure if that was cover herself or not! Hopefully as you reduce, the problem will rectify itself. Best of luck!

I too had blurry vision but it doesn't happen much now. I'm on 6.5mg and about to drop to 6 tomorrow. I have 'panda' eyes ......black circles which I feel are worse than the weight gain!🐼🐼. I also suffer from dry eye which was there before PMR but seems to be worse now.

I had dry eye before I had PMR too but it was well under control by taking 1100 mg of Omega 3. But when I started taking prednisone my eye doctor said I had to stop taking it so my eyes have gotten horrible. They have gotten so bad that I am having vision problems. After trying OTC drops with no success he prescribed Restasis. I've only been on it for 4 days. And so far it's been working.

Yes, they've definitely improved, quite alot actually. My lens were adjusted very slightly, tho I couldn't tell the different to be honest but I also cut down drastically on sugar. I was told by a reflexologist I was attending, that too much sugar can affect your sight, now whether this is true or not I've no idea but I did cut down on my sugar intake and there was an improvement. It did coincide with reducing pred so it may have been a coincidence. I have found over the Christmas with more indulgent food around, ie biscuits, chocolates and cake, that the blurry vision has been more evident again, so back to basics tomorrow and get back to healthier eating & hopefully that'll help again. Do you think you're eating alot of sugar and could you cut it down? It would be interesting to see of it made a difference. Also as you reduce the steroids might make a difference, hopefully!

Thank you. I'll see if GP can prescribe when I have to visit next.

Why did you have to stop the omega 3?

Hi Mrs hobbles so glad you mentioned sugar, cause I've been guilty of eating a lot over christmas and really do find i have more pain and CRP and ESR goes up a bit,

So like you I really need to get back on track and back to a healthy diet😊

At first he said the prednisone would do the same thing that the omega-3 did. But when I came to him and said my eyes were terrible I asked him if I could get back on the Omega 3 he was very reluctant but he said I could try it but I would probably briuse a lot more. That was all he said would happened.

Apart from the fact that no they don't do the same thing as far as I can see, I'd lay odds he's trying to get out of it without looking silly. But that is Mrs Cynical speaking...

I looked it up and because it slows blood clotting it can mean greater risk of severe bruising, especially if taken with medication like aspirin.  Sounds like your eyes condition would trump these other possible side effects.

In which case it really is a case of trying it for the answer. I was on warfarin as well as pred for a few years - never an extra bruise to be seen, even if my INR (clotting index) was silly high. I was switched to Pradaxa because the warfarin got complicated - and for the first month I had the most horrendous bruises on my shins. Once I weathered that the bruising has stopped and despte pred plus Pradaxa - not a bruise in sight.

Think most of us would be guilty of that I've the past couple of weeks Ricky! You def need to cut down the sugar intake as the blurry vison can be a warning of pre-diabetes (esp being on pred). I've read that Chromium is good to help with sugar cravings so will check with my pharmacist if it can be taken with pred and start on it quickly! Good luck!

Oh heck, something else to worry about!!  My granny had diabetes and died blind because of it. My vision has become blurry. Am seeing an eye specialist in a few weeks, so will check on that. Thanks
