Why do I feel so unwell all the time?

I suffer from depression and anxiety, and while I know that these are major factors in affecting general health and wellbeing I am beginning to feel so fed up with feeling unwell all of the time.
I'm so drained and exhausted all the time, I have constant pallor, dark circles under my eyes, terrible dry and flaky skin and my face is covered in red blotches, scabs and blemishes. My hair is so thin and frail it breaks when I brush it and it just always looks flat and dull. Sometimes when I am out walking around, I feel breathless, I drag my feet like my legs are weighed down, lightheaded or like there is a pressure in my skull, or that I'm carrying a block of lead inside my abdomen. I feel sniffley, I go from perspiring excessively to getting chills through my spine. And my muscles ache and 'tenderize' very easily, like my body is constantly in a dull state of pain. I often come home after a day out and have barely enough energy to drag myself upstairs and collapse on my bed and my body almost throbs from fatigue, I can feel every pulse pounding through me because my heart rate is so high. As a woman I also suffer from terribly heavy and painful periods that take a massive toll on my health, and leave me bedridden for at least 2-3 days every month and I still never feel like I completely recover afterwards.
I have tried absolutely everything over the years- specialized diets, exercising regularly, taking vitamins and supplements, holistic treatments and self help books- but I can never seem to feel completely healthy. I have maybe one week out of every couple of months when I feel 'good' but I can rarely enjoy it thinking about when it will end. I'm starting to wonder if there is something really wrong with me under the surface that I have been missing, but my symptoms are so broad and vague I have no idea where to start considering what it could even be.
Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thankyou to those who take the time to read this

I do hope you are feeling better now. I just came across your post and I could associate a lot of the symptoms you are mentioning, and I wondered if a B12 blood test might be a good idea. I have recently been diagnosed with B12 deficiency/pernicious anaemia and you have been having a lot of the symptoms.

Like you I have had depressive illness for a long time. I have also had symptoms like hair breaking and falling out and bad periods. I am now on the menopause and it started when I was 34. Firstly you need to take Vitamin B6 every single day at least 10mg per day for at least 3 months before you will notice a difference, I done this and my bad period symptoms stopped although I had to take it regularly for a few months. You could add an insurance to this and take evening primrose oil 1000mg one per day for all your female symptons (aching breasts etc). They do work. For my hair falling out I tried everything, iron, multivitamins, specialist hair pills, until I got some amino acids complex which includes them all and not just one or two of the amino acids, and took a large tablet of those one each day which I do not like as the tablet is so large. I still take them and for them to work well they need to be taken for at least 9 months along with a multi B vitamins. This was proven by my consultant when I told him I was taking amino acids, he then said take with vitamin B complex. So good luck with that.
The other thing that helps is a daily walk of at least 10 minutes, I do not do this as my breathing is real bad but I should as it keeps us fit, I dont know if you are like me I have got out of fitness and need to get back into it. I find my breathing is better in the summer months so will be walking soon hope you will join me.

I would suggest seeing your GP to see if thyroid is an issue and if iron is an issue anemia and thyroid do make you feel so tired all the time. But you could be like me and find that it is a number of issues and not just one. So do not give up trying to nail it.

Hi Holly!
I'm sorry to hear you're going through this.
I've been having the same feeling for over a year. A general feeling of illness and malaise.
Random aches all over my body and constant fatigue.
I finally got medical insurance and went to see a GP. My blood test showed hyperactive thyroid and high cholesterol and low HDL (good cholesterol).
My thyroid ultra-sound showed cystic nodules and enlarged lymph nodes. I'm going to see an endocrinologist at the end of this month and I'm a bit worried about the swollen lymph nodes.
My PCP thinks the low energy and fatigue is caused by the hyperactive thyroid.
I also suffer from anxiety and that alone can do harm to your body in many ways.
I would go ahead and start from a blood test amd go from there.
I wish you well

High cholesterol is fine espeically is someone as old as I am, its all a fallacy and there is along story behind it, but as many people die of heart attack who have very low cholesterol as high, It is two things which are the problem high coagulation blood clotting which causes heart attacks strokes and embolism I think too. I think you will find this mighrt help you and its no harm anyway not being a drug make sure it doesnt interact with what you are takng though usually it doesnt. Niacin things blood too.
I have just started taking it, and jumpe into taking 300 twice daily and went tomato red and boiled, but then I felt sleepy and dizzy afterwards so I brought t down for a slow start. Please try the niacin before drugs go to youtube niacin vitamin B3 and see what they say.

Hey holly47
How you doing now?
I have a whole mix of physcialy health problems with the anxiety and depression on top as it naturally comes...I find on my tired days when whenn even holding a cup of tea is difficult - I call them my recharging days and there's plenty of them! I think my body is deliberatley making my muscles heavy to stop me from doing too much so they can rest and recharge. Frustrating when you have things to do I know...but on my better days I make sure I do something extra special that I've always wanted to do. I have a buscket list of some sorts but they are very simple ideas often things that can be done close to home and on a low budget. Each time I do finish something on the list I feel fanstatic...probably more then other people would becuase it's been more difficult to reach those goals. Even though my problems and my health hasn't changed one bit my whole attitude on life has! :D Never thought such a simple list would make so much difference. So maybe you need to try and doing something you've always wanted to do in life no matter how difficult it is to you...if you put your mind to it you can achieve it! Hope this helps you x

Holly,
Try researching Sjögren's syndrome it sound like a lot like many of the symptoms and is overlooked a lot. The maya clinic provides a lot of information on it. I hope things get better

I am concerned that you are taking antipsychotics as they can cause hair loss or lithium I think disagrees with some people. I take mood stablisers and wellbutrin the only one that helps and rarelt amysulpride. I am not someone who is into taking drugs actually. However lately I have found that Niacin can help in many ways with out symptoms especially yours with the skin and hair problems etc. and other than that which has to gradually become high doses, try looking up the niacin depression thing on youtube- and also turmeric which can take away joint and muscle pains supposedly better than drugs like anti inflaments can. My brother who is 84 can vouch for that as he is back playing table tennis after taking it regularly and many up to date docs recommend NIacin or B3 vitamin. YOu have to start low say 50 mg and you should get a red flush but its not harm and they say it just shows it working then you keeping increasing dose as necesary to keep getting a flush but now more than to the flush ( some people take hundred or even thousands of mg of it you cant overdose is a natural vitamin to us. I hope this gets sense because before I have tried to help people in various ways and its been shut. Anyway good luck, I am just starting on B3 now in very low doses to accustom myself to it. My husband takes 600mg a day now before he gets a flush and asays he seems to have more energy and can last working all day whereas before he used to get tired.

Hi Holly,
Looking at your symptoms, I agree they do seem to point in several different directions.
The one thing I can see connecting them is hormones, which doesn't narrow it down all that much.
Also, have you been to an immunology specialist? Just to rule out autoimmune disorders.
I would recommend that you start reading: books & internet; and enlist loved ones who are willing to help to read on your behalf.
An infectious disease specialist might be worth seeing, as well.
It may take multiple doctors, tons of reading and even more attempted treatment modalities before you find the answers you're looking for.
Just remember, each step is important and serves a purpose; and enjoy the happiness wherever you find it.
Sending love,
K
