Why Osteoporosis ?

I'm 46 and have had osteoporosis for 15 years t score -5 in the spine and -2.5 in the hip, the condition drives me crazy as I feel like I'm waiting for a fracture to happen everyday! I had my second IV of Zod Acid last month, since the last infusion I have started sertraline for anxciaty. No Doctor can give me an reason why, all my blood tests are normal and I was very active as a young man.

I hear you Gary3000! Aaaaargh! This is no way to live, is it? I think it might have been better not knowing, right? Are you still able to be active? They say osteoporosis is a silent disease. I'm not so sure. I'm in a great deal of pain if I do too much activity throughout the day-have to pace myself. My heart goes out to you!!

Hi, thank you for your comments, yes I'm very active with no pain. I'm just finding it hard to leave the house every day not knowing the outcome, sounds daft but the brain is a strange organ!

The experts say OS does NOT cause pain - many have really low t-scores  for years, but don't know about it.

Are you sure you haven't got Osteoarthritis.  Has your rheumatologist checked you for OA?

I have just seen that you have already had hormone tests, I am surprised, your osteoporosis must be one of the rarer causes, but the advice you have been given about magnssium and k2, at this stage is about all you can hope for at this time, try and put the bone loss back faster than it is taken away, to beat the disease, thats what I am trying to do.  Alcohol is said to be a cause for osteoporosis in men as well, and some women, big drinkers, I believe, or frequently over a long period of time.  I am trying the supplements Gary, to beat osteoporosis in my spine:-  2x vit.K2 (MK7)

1x500mg Calcium D3, 1x15mg zinc with copper and 2x150mg magnesium.  I did some research on the internet to get the ratio correct, but it is all experimental Gary.  I do not know if it is working for me yet though, I wont have another scan yet for a while.

I agree there must be lots of people with very low T scores as I was told I was -5 in the spine 15 years ago age 31, at the time I was having an MRI scan to see why I was getting sciatica. In time the sciatica sorted its self out, what we did learn from the scan was the bone mass did not look right so I then had the dex scan with confirmed the diagnosis.

Re: the Osteoarthritis I have has blood tests for all related conditions around Osteoporosis with no problems found.I have never been on steroids or drank too much alcohol nor smoked and have always worked out at the gym, mad world (although I do sometimes think the motor car has to blame for and increase in osteoporosis as no one walks anywhere anymore)

Sounds as though you have done everything right, which indicates a hormone problem though. Perhaps another hormone that was not tested is to blame for your condition, i will see what I can fing on the Cochrane Library.

He knows of my pain and difficulty in being active, and has done some labwork, but I'm thinking the tests were because of the severe osteoporosis diagnosis. I will check with him on that. Thanks for your thoughts.

Just curious...sounds like your -5 spine T-score was 15 years ago. Have you had a recent bone density scan? I'm just wondering what exactly you're doing and if it has been improving your scores.

Hi they scan me every two years, I was on bisphosphonates for 8 years there was an improvement -3 in the spine but after 4 years I went Back to -5, my last scan was 20 months ago after the scan I was started on a once a year Zod Acid IV for three years next scan in 4 months.

I have less than desirable T-scores too. I hope your next scan shows positive results. I don't think I've heard of Zod Acid IV. Are you doing well, so side-effects, on this med? It seems like many on this site have decided to go natural, and I wish I could, but the whole thing is rather scary, so thought it best tocave to the fear-mongering and take the med I was prescribed. My very best to you!

If it is zoledronic acid it is one of the bisphosphonates.  This would be an IV form, which avoids stomach and oesophagus problems.

Gary, is it time for a drug holiday?

      Hi Anhaga

your right my next drug holiday is in 18 months, I know all risks with taking bisphosphonates but as my T score was so low the risk of fractuer was higher than the side affects of bisphosphonates based on my age and condition.

...so your last scan (20 months ago) showed -5 in your spine? Was that while you were still on the biophosphonates, or did you take a drug break in there somewhere? It (the concern, the stress) never quite goes away, does it? Did what they prescribed for you for the anxiety, is that helping? My heart to yours...

Hi, yes I was on a drug holiday at the time, I'm feeling much better now I'm taking the stress meds! Thank you

So, have you only had the two IV of Zod Acid? One when first diagnosed, and the other after your drug holiday? How long of a holiday was it? I would love to take a holiday, but I've been reading around that after taking Forteo they are probably going to want me to start something else. Aaaaargh! I hate this! I think I was diagnosed about 4 years ago and I know what you mean about the stress!
