Why when I eat unhealthy food or drink alcohol do I feel better?

Don't want to go into too much deatail but I have had my gall bladder out and an umbilical hernia repair. I have suffered with nausea, constipation and sickness for around 5 years. I have had 2 endoscopies both showing severe stomach inflammation and also evidence of bile in lower duodendum. I am negative for helico bacter and everything else they tested for (I assume cancers). What I cannot understand is the following and would love to know if anyone experiences something similar:

A) Why do I feel better when I eat high calorie, unhealthy food and excessive amounts? I go to the toilet better (runny stool sorry for detail!) and my nausea disappears

B) Why do I also feel better when I drink alcohol?? If I go out for a few drinks whether it is beer, wine or spirits the more I drink the better my nausea and stomach issues. This seems to go against all the stuff I read about these stomach complaints. Has anyone experienced anything similar?

I would also love to know what I should be doing with my specialist. He is completely indifferent, he wants rid of me but he has not even given me a diagnosis. He only sees me every 9 months and between appointments I have no help. I have been with him for almost 4 years and have suffered throughout. I have had no motility study although motillium (domperidone) does help intermittently, no stool study, no barium swallow, no colonoscopy, no Ph test and nothing else. I am a 40 year old man who is just at the end of his tether. I am always in a bad mood due to this and my wife and daughter never see the ebst of me anymore. I have an appointment due in June.........what should I demand of my gastro specialist. I have had enough and I need to get answers to this. I would even be willing to pay for Linx surgery privately if I could at least get a definitive diagnosis of my problems. God I am so gutted about this, any help or advice would be really gratefully received. Many thanks.

Paul

I will look into it as I think I do react badly to lots of fruit and veg. I am going to try pro biotics and apple cider vinegar first. Thank God this site has sensible people on it with practical advice. I have a lot of things to try now and to look into and i am very grateful. If only my doc was as bothered about my condition as the people here. Thanks!

    Dear Paul

I believe everyone is entitled to a second opinion, even on the NHS.  I would discuss this option with your GP.  Best of luck.  Angie

Angus you are right, I asked for second opinion and best thing ever did. But checked up my condition on the web first, and saw a consultant who was high up onn my condition and would have travelled anywhere to see him, but, was lucky to find he was at my local hospital. What good luck was that.

    Hi Paul,

Just a note on the diet question... I don't know why it works but The doctor who just completed my endoscopy yesterday has put me on a low fiber diet due to the gastritis... He said no fresh green vegetables no whole grains.. And it seems essentially nothing healthy! He wants me eating white bread, white rice, only canned vegetables or those cooked to death with nothing good left in them... He must've seen by the look on my face that I didn't understand this... How can this unhealthy diet to be good for me? He explained that the condition of my stomach is such that it cannot digest the whole grains and high-fiber anything right now so I need to give it a break... So for the next couple of weeks I will be eating quite unhealthy food it seems and taking my meds... He said that should make me feel substantially better in two weeks when I come back to see him next... So maybe this is why you feel better when you eat low fiber foods which are considerably more unhealthy foods... It seems so odd, but here we go... smile

Just thought I would update. Had been feeling pretty grim and went to GP who referred me urgently to hospital. Guess what?? Another Gastroscopy!!!!!! I was in two minds whether to go but I did........operative said, "nothing of note", I had told him that I wasn't too bad that day and he would find lower gastritis than usual but then I got a letter a few days later saying I was positive for helico bacter! I have had 3 gastroscopies over the past 4 years and this has never come up before. Why has it come up now?? Did they miss it?? I heard it leads to cancer (a 6 fold increase in possibility), the antibiotics have not helped my symptoms.........ARGHHHHH!!!! any advice gratefully, info, thoughts gratefully  received. Just feel like I am being badly let down and that I am just going round in circles with bad news all around me!

so sorry to hear you're going through this. definitely would consider another doctor...it's hard to find one that listens, or one that will have a real discussion with you. I feel like sometimes, they know more than they are letting on but feel like they can't break bad news to you for some reason. maybe because it's because they think it's something that you don't want to hear and because it's not absolutely critical to your medication plan
