Will Gastrisis ever go?

Hi everyone,

I've had Gastrisis on and off now for about 1-2 months. I've had a gastroscopy to confirm it and biopsys done (waiting of results). I'm currently on omeprazole and gaviscon. The Gastrisis went completely for around 2 weeks, then after a McDonald's burger (my own fault I know) it came back! The first day of the flare up was horrendous, now it's settled down again, now 100% but I do feel maybe 80% better, I wake up around 5am with burning and cramps but they settle down as the day goes on then completely go... Same again day after.

When I first got the Gastrisis it was sudden, happened overnight and before that I've never had any kind of trouble with my stomach, or had issues with eating any type of food. My doctors guessing a bug has caused it but until the biopsys are back we won't know.

All I'm asking is if anyone has been in a similar situation and has got rid of it completely? I'm only 26, and a bit worried about living my life this way long term.

If it is a bug that's caused the problem, then when it's treated should the Gastrisis go?

Hi Laura, I feel very sorry for you as I'm in the same boat. Biopsy confirmed inflammation of the duodenum. I'm 80% back to normal but still suffer if I try to eat normally again. Like you I'm only 28, and dread to think I have this forever. But other forums have posters who have got better but apparently it does take time. Up to a tart in some cases!!! I've been like this since October and it's been very drawn out. Just wish it would clear up and go away for good. I was never an unhealthy eater anyway but it seems like something just went wrong one day. I'll be following this decision in the hope that someone can provide a happy resolution. Doctors haven't been too concerned or provided much advice to get rid of it! Do you get bad indigestion, burping and feel like food just sits in Your stomach?

Yeah I also get indigestion, burping after foods and it does feel like it takes a while for food to go down so I don't eat at least 3-4 hours before bed.

I think if I knew it was going to get better I would feel better in myself because I know their is an end

Thanks for all these messages, they really have made me feel better in the fact it should hopefully go. I think when it's been dragged out so long, along with not sleeping properly its just mentally draining me.

I've never been a drinker to start with, maybe have a few at new year but that's all so can rule that out, I don't smoke, don't do drugs, and have never really taken any type of medication. I once took paracetamol for earache but other than that nothing. I did however go to Cuba in sept 2014 and caught a bug while their which gave me chronic sick, diarrhoea and cramps. When I got home I was given sickness tablets, dirolyte, and buscopan and soon got back to normal. My doctor Keeps mentioning that which has me thinking he thinks it's a bug from their but it was over a year ago now so I'm not too sure.

Probably not helped by another forum I was on which I asked the same question and got the reply....

"Once you have Gastrisis you never get rid of it, it's a lifelong problem and once you've had it you'll more than likely to get stomach cancer"

Needless to say I was fuming! Not the best thing to say to someone who's worried.

Hi Laura, I'm determined to remain upbeat like you. What a horrible person saying that it's completely untrue. As long as you haven't got any other physical problems or ongoing conditions, I have been lead to believe that gastritis can and will clear up. It's just inflammation that needs to be fixed and as long as the trigger has gone it should heal. You just need to be sensible with your food for a long while! Not the best thing to hear but in the long term it pays dividends!

Although l was diagnosed with acid reflux many years ago, l never experienced any symptoms. lve always been fairly careful with food, never ate anything excessively fatty or spicy hot. Then last year started with severe nausea, bloating burping discomfort and went off food, just had very plain small meals, no ready meals, no canned,

basically pots, veg, chicken fish rice pasta. Scope showed some inflammation of stomach duodenum, but no pylori,l was given reslt straight after as they can see the inflammation, saw it myself  on the pics they take,  so prescribed omprazole which did settle it 90percent, still flares a little now and again, but not for too long, though try to stick to the plain diet, l think if your vunerable prone to any inflammatory condition anywhere in the body, nose, eyes chest skin, you need to be a bit more careful not to do anything to aggrevate it, some aggrevated by allergens to you, or high fat foods, whatever aggrevates, avoid best you can, not always easy, as we do get tempted, and sometimes you can eat something that seems ok but might be a bit iffy, as probably happened on the  hol in cuba. Alcahol can aggrevate, l,m very wary with it now. But if l take care l can keep it settled and do hope in time it will settle down totally, might take a while, l hope Barrett or paul will answer as both know a lot about gastritus and will explain how it happens and advice. Good luck

Laura, once they get back the results of your biopsy it could well show the particular cause of your problems, and with that be able to give you the right meds to put it right completely, so good luck with that.

    Hi Laura

'Gastritis' inflammation of the stomach can be acute ( suddenly) or ( chronic) if not treated and it can be caused by many different things : alcohol, NSAIDs, bile, h. Pylori etc. If the cause is determined, gastritis is curable. It sounds you had acute gastritis that now became long term, because the cause needs to be found so it can get better. The biopsy will show if the inflammation is caused by a bacterial infection that can be treated. I hope you find out and keep us posted.
