Will have hip replacement in August...

I live in the USA and found your forum very helpful reading.  I have had a total knee replacement but now need a hip replacement as well.  I was wondering what type of replacement is preferred:  metal on metal, metal on plastic or ceramic on ceramic?  Also is there a brand name that doesn't have a lot of recalls?  Thank you for any information you can provide.

    Hi Mary Ann

    I'm sorry I wont be much help....I'm in the UK

    We dont have a lot of choice.......I do know NOT metal on metal

    As for brand names.....I've had 2 THR's and dont know the brand names.

    I think each surgeon over here has their own preference

      Hi Eileen,

      Thank you so much for responding.  It is basically the same here as to the reference of the surgeon's preference.  There has been a lot of recalls here in the US.  Lawyers advertise on television to call them if you've had a "whatever name" hip implant to call them if you are having trouble with your recalled hip replacement.  I will probably have more questions after the surgery.  I have to go to a "joint academy" class this Wednesday where they explain procedure, hosptial stay and recovery.  It is just nice to have someone to talk with who has gone through the process.  Thanks again Eileen.

      Hi

      Its interesting to hear the differences in countries.

      Never heard of a Joint academy

      We have a pre assessment

      Then we go to group physiotherapy.....just to be told about exercises etc

      Then in our area the Occupational Therapist has a mock kitchen and a mock bathroom and she takes you round that and shows you the different equipment that they will let you have for the time you need if for your recovery

      Here.....we get toilet seats {raised}

      a chair if we dont have a chair the right height.....I had setees and they were a no no.

      Crutches,

      a trolly.....that is good. You walk to it with your crutches. Prop your crutches up and take the trolly {as an aid} into the kitchen to make tea or whatever and come back then wheel the things back. Good if your husband works.

      Grabbers for picking things off the floor

      Shoe horns {never used it lol} and things to put your socks/tights on with {never used that}

      Long handled bath spoinges or brushes

      It'll be interesting to hear what you're told.

      Love

      Lucky you, Eileen, All I got before the op was a letter asking me to measure my toilet seat height and also my chair. Then I was loaned (for 6 weeks) a raiser for the toilet, a walking frame and crutches.

      After the op I was given a book of exercises and the minimal supervision while in hospital, no follow-up once I left and certainly no mock-up kitchen or even a trolly to use (I bought my own as I couldn't manage otherwise). yes I was given a long-handled sponge, shoe horn and also leg raiser but that was it.

      Gosh Eileen you were lucky!!! I went to the Nuffield in Derby and only had a toilet seat and 2 crutches to go home with pouch a piece of paper with some excercises on ...... Shocking

      Similar Annette! I went to a private hospital (bupa) in Surrey I under the choose & book scheme through the NHS, can't complain about the private care, own room, great food, sky tv etc, but just crutches & excersise booklet! No injections either. I had injections for the 3 days I was there & now aspirin, which I take anyway. Apparently the injections are over £6 a pop each so I suppose being an NHS patient, well, it doesn't need working out that it's probably costings!

      Hi Jayive

      I did have to do measurement beforehand and take them in to my OT appointment.

      I was only given a page of exercises as well ....told how to do them in hopital then left to it.

      I think there are few hospitals {I'm in the North East} that have these mock kitchens etc.   I didnt get shown one for my 2nd THR 4 years after the first oneconfused  I assume its the money angle of it.,

      I got the trolly because I saw it on my first visit and it wasnt mentioned but I said could i have one of those {all of this was just for the 6 weeks or therabouts} Of course you can....if you dont ask you dont get LOL I only knew about the trolly from another forum. Not allowed to put websites on herewink

      Hi Christine

      I'm in the North East and went to Hexham General for both THR's

      I dont think all hospitals are the same.

      As far as I know most of them have you back for a 6 week check up.

      Then they have you back some months later but I cant exactly remember

      After that if its only oA you never see them again or thats what I found

      Our hospital sends you home with either crutches or sticks and I thought that was normal.

      Ring your hospital......ask for the Occupational Therapist {most places you can refer yourself to an OT}

      Make an appointment and see her. They are usually very good at supplying you with things.....either temporarily or permanently.

      Things like my grabber was temporary but after the 6 weeks was up and i sent the raised toilet seat back I asked if i could keep the grabber and they said yes.

      Hubby then found one in a car boot sale so I have one upstairs and one downstairs.  LOL

      Wherabouts are you in the North.?

      pm me if you want any more info....cant put links on here

      love

      I will update you after the class.  I had a total knee replacement in 2011 and they tell me the hip is easier recovery due to the lesser range of motion you have to get back.  I have most of the things you listed above but we don't get the use of anything we purchase or own and hopefully Medicare (if you are old enough) or your personal health insurance will pay for it.  I will be in touch.

    NOT metal on metal. Otherwise it's rather up to your surgeon. The question I asked was the median survival time of the prosthesis as I wanted one which was well established. The one I have has a median survival of over 20 years and rising so I have a good chance of dying of something before I need a revision because, of couse, I am going to be in the upper half of the distribution!

    After hip replacement you have to learn NOT to do things which your hip might let you do - like bending down.  They tell me that when I have my TKR in a couple of weeks I can do anything I can persuade the knee to do.  But they also tell me that both of them need a steady rehab where you listen to your body and don't overdo it too soon.

    Good luck.

    Definitely not METAL! I'm 3 weeks post op on a THR with uncemented ceramic/ceramic. I never got a thing when I came out, I already had a raised toilet seat. Family help with stockings, shoes etc so good there. You do forget things though, I've turned round a couple of times but all good, I think. When I drop a crutch I follow the procedure in the excersise book so bend over with the operated leg compltelty straight, again I think all is ok. I'm very impatient & the thing I find most tough is sitting for long periods, say on a chair, basically my bum still hurts! I never realised that the incision would be that far back cheesygrin

      Hi Martin I am also 3 weeks in and keep getting what feels like a muscle spasm or trapped nerve in deep in my butt cheek!  Scari s his healing well but still a bit sore , but I am very impatient , still need help with the dreaded stockings too , I am having a ceremonial burning of those on Aug 1st my 6 weeks will be up then .

      how are you getting on walking can you walk without help yet any limp?

      Hey Anette......well mine was uncemented so only partial weight for 3 weeks using both crutches, seeing physio tomorrow so hopefully down to one crutch? Even with the two crutches Anette I really feel the operated leg is longer & was told that could happen, so yes I feel like I'm limping. Funny you should say that about spasms! My daughter drove me to pick up my wife from Gatwick (40min journey), I have a Nissan Note so fortunate enough that it's quite high anyway, I put a pillow on the seat, but on the way back but there was a shooting pain that went down to my knee!! Could it be the body on the mend?, I'm sure I've not done anything wrong, yes I expect we all forget sometimes & maybe turn round etc. I've got to admit I really feel for all you females out there, going to the loo is easy for us guys, how on earth do you manage?! Also Annette I recieved a letter from the surgeon the other day, well his secretary & it said the stockings can come off after 3 weeks!! Perhaps the Physio had a surprise for me tomorrow smile
