Will have hip replacement in August...

I live in the USA and found your forum very helpful reading.  I have had a total knee replacement but now need a hip replacement as well.  I was wondering what type of replacement is preferred:  metal on metal, metal on plastic or ceramic on ceramic?  Also is there a brand name that doesn't have a lot of recalls?  Thank you for any information you can provide.

    hi maryann

i have had two hip replacements in the last 7 months as the first was not done correctly first surgon's used ceramic femur head titanium rod thats as much as i no as i never had a follow up with him.

second surgon used colbut, titanium rod, and metal plate and screws not a clue what the femur head is made of but did get a follow up with the second surgon he was from a different hospital but our surgon's seem to put what they think is best to suit them and the patient

i have know about the USA having one recalled that did use metal on metal forgot the name i did read about it as it was causeing poison to leak into the blood stream and the patien'ts had to have them took back out also ask if it is going to be cemented or not my first wasen't but second is.

im 9 weeks post op but still im having problems again i just cannot bend my knee and getting a lot of pain from the hip and the whole of my leg down to my feet.

good luck and hope you have a speedy recovery.

Here in the UK, we are mostly sent home from the op with crutches and a toilet seat. It's a bit like being sent to war without any arms, no map on your own. And as for what is the best prosthesis? Well, apart from the no no metal on metal, what's the best cake recipe? Every surgeon can tell you why the one he uses is his preferred one. They seem to like dissing each others work too. My left hip is ceramic and apart from the noises it makes, feels like it's my body now. That surgeon believed he was doing the best for me as I was relatively young and very active. He retired. Second surgeon could see no advantage to ceramic and used the usual metal with plastic.

Haha yeah Juliette, mind kinda clicks, if I put my hand on it you can feel it, can't hear anything, but I can feel it cheesygrin, I'm 53 & my surgeon said that he likes ceramic/ceramic in 'younger' patients, also he likes the uncemented method, why, who knows?

Juliette, I found you reply hilarious -- sent home with crutches and a toilet seat. I thoiught post op recovery here was pretty bad, at least as far as the surgeon was concerned who just disappeared and I didn't see him until 30 days later -- peek-a-boo, remember me? I was first sent to an unlicensed facility that was basically a hospice where people were sent to die. It was awful and when I made a big stink about it, threaten a lawsuit, they then sent me to the finest facility in the area that turned out to be a mile from my home. I had to buy whatever appliances I needed, a toilet seat riser, a shoe horn like device for putting socks on, and a cane and Rollator walker. My recovery went faster than expected up until it started to go wrong.

Martin, Mine makes a symphony of noise. I think it makes less than it did at first but it clunks under stress and if I bend forward with weight on that leg it can make a squeak like the air being expelled from a rubber glove. I have had an examination under anaesthetic but they can't find an abnormality. However the hip is very flexible and I can sit cross legged on the floor with ease.

Thanks Juliette that is interesting.  And yes, I am not really sure I can actually request metal on plastic or ceramic but I will find out soon.  I appreciate this information.  Hope you are doing well.

I'm 47 and 7 weeks post op, I asked why some are cemented (mine isn't) and was told they don't like to cement younger people as revision surgery is difficult if needed x

After THR I was sent for two weeks inpatient physiccal therapy at a brand new facility. It was very nice and almost like a vacation except that someone came around three times a day and dragged me off to the big therapy room where I underwent a series of increasing intensity exercises. I would just start getting comfy in my nice private room then in would pop the therapist to haul me off for another round of walking 50 steps unaided. Damnation that hurt !!!! Anyway, I got the Zimmer CPT plastic on plastic as that made the most sense to me. I don't know if that is the best but my research turneed up no major problems. I am only18 months out. As for surgeons, I don't think the patient is capable of vetting a surgeon. We can only make our selection based on our limited knowledge and hope for the best. In my case it was not good enough - the surgeon made a mistake

Hello mary ann, i am in California.   I am not an expert, there are others in this forum who have far mor knowledge but from reading people's experience, i learned that you should stay away from metal on metal as the technic causes serious damage to the your body.  I had both hips replaced 10 months apart, my doctors (2) told me i had Depuy on my right and Zimmer on the left.  The Depuy components i have in my body have not been recalled, Depuy has had some parts recalled in the past but doctor said i do not have those-they go by serial numbers.  The one implant that has a lot of recalls is Stryker.  That is all i know.

Thanks Kaleani, I appreciate the information.  I am going to a "joint academy" session that the hospital holds this Wednesday.  I will bring up the question on metal on metal.  Hope you are doing well.

Hi Mary Ann, I'm in Cleveland OH & had THR 3/28. The hosp. offers Joint Camp at which time they explain the procedure, exercises, etc. Also their recommendations for aids to use at home after surgery. Fortunately I had raised toilet seats, canes, a walker and other such helpers as I have bad discs. After surgery & 3 days in the surgical unit I spent 8 days in their skilled nursing unit. I could have gone home after the 3 days or into a separate nursing home for rehab but thought why not just stay where I was as all my records were there. During the 8 days I had PT and OT as well as PT when I came home. Medicare and my secondary ins. pd for all.(The surgery was anterior which is being used more in the US as healing is quicker and movement less restrictive) All that being said for the last  month I've had pain in the hip and down my leg just like the pain on the other side from the bad discs. I see thr surgeon the end of July so we'll see what he says. I don't know what materials were used, just titanium. Good luck.

Hi and thank you for your reply.  I actually went to Joint Academy last night and did receive all the information.  I, too, have most of the stuff I need as I had TKR in 2011 on the same leg.  My biggest problem right now is that I also need a left shoulder replacement and have pain now.  It's my right leg for hip and left shoulder.  I asked if I could have a cortisone shot a few weeks before surgery and the surgeon thought it would be a good idea.  My surgeon chose posterior but he does so with patients who have a little more weight on them.  So sorry you are having pain it just seems to show up somewhere all the time!  Glad to hear that Medicare and secondary ins. paid.  I was wondering how much I would have to come up with.  Thank you again for your reply and let me know how your appt goes in July.  Best of luck with that.
