Worried about large ovarian cyst, possible cancer and operation

Hi Everyone

I am 60 and was diagnosed with a large ovarian cyst on Tuesday after a routine scan on my gallbladder.  The cyst is 8.7cm x 5.5cm approx 31/2 inches by 21/2 inches)  I had a CA125 blood test on Thursday afternoon because, although most of the cyst looks to be fluid, there is a solid part to it too (but don't know the result yet).  I am really worried about what is going to happen to me, whether it is cancer or not, but also how the operation will be done with such a big cyst.  Could they still do this with keyhole or will it need to be the bigger operation?

My doctor has referred me to the consultant as urgent to be seen within two weeks, but she is now on holiday until Tuesday so I cannot talk to her..

Has anyone else been in a similar situation (especially at my age)?  How did they do the operation and what did they remove, just the cyst, the ovaries as well, or more?  How long did it take to get over it?

I would be very grateful for any information anyone can give me please?

Best wishes

Kathy

Hi Julie.  I'm so sorry you are feeling so poorly.  I went through the menopause at 42, so haven't had those terrible symptoms since my op.  But I can remember what it was like when I did go through it.  Have tried anything herbal like black cohosh or st John's wort to tied you over?  They might help a bit - I used to take natural remedies until I went on HRT.  They didn't work as well as HRT but did help a bit.  When can you start your HRT?

I didn't get the news I'd hoped for.  They found cancer on the outside of my ovary so I have to go back in to have everything else removed, and most probably chemo.  At the moment I am so shocked and upset, especially after the awful experience I had before, particularly with regard to my hospital stay.  Now it looks like I might have to be in there for around 5 to 7 days unless they can do it keyhole again.

Has anyone else been in the position of having to go back in for a second op please?

Didn't get the news I had hoped for.  They found cancer on the outside of my ovary so I have to go back in for further surgery - they can't be certain if it is anywhere else - and will probably have chemo.  Has anyone else had experience of this?

I'm very upset at the moment and in shock.

      Kath I'm so so sorry.

You've been through alot and come out the other side, the first op. See this, if you can, as stage two forgetting as far as you can what has gone before and concentrating on this new and unwelcome chapter facing it head on.

Look forward and not back that way you can concentrate all your energies on the end goal - health.

      Big big hugs

Yes I did have to have a second op after something was found at a first but not after the latest operation, though that may yet be to come.

Thanks Taz.  I'm hoping they've caught it early (they think stage 1c) but it is all so daunting.  How well did you recover after your second op and how long after the first one was it?

Second ops are, for some reason, often easier to recover from than the first. I found it so but as I said before everyone is different.

      Just over 2wks.

Ring the My Ovacome nurses on the number I left earlier though I will message it to you as soon as I can

Just got off the phone to a friend, twelve years ago she had womb cancer so everything was removed, pathology found Ovarian cancer as well, she has an inherited syndrome that is rare, talk about a double whammy!! Anyway she asked me to reassure you that she is still very much alive and kicking 😊

She is living proof of how far things have come and how beatable cancer is.

      Big big hugs

Thanks Taz.  That's reassuring.  I hope I do recover easier.  I will try and ring the Ovacome nurse tomorrow.

That is reassuring Taz. Do you know what grade her ovarian cancer was.  Did she have chemo after?  That poor lady.  So glad she is well now.  Please give her my best wishes.

      Big hugs back
