Worried about large ovarian cyst, possible cancer and operation

Hi Everyone

I am 60 and was diagnosed with a large ovarian cyst on Tuesday after a routine scan on my gallbladder.  The cyst is 8.7cm x 5.5cm approx 31/2 inches by 21/2 inches)  I had a CA125 blood test on Thursday afternoon because, although most of the cyst looks to be fluid, there is a solid part to it too (but don't know the result yet).  I am really worried about what is going to happen to me, whether it is cancer or not, but also how the operation will be done with such a big cyst.  Could they still do this with keyhole or will it need to be the bigger operation?

My doctor has referred me to the consultant as urgent to be seen within two weeks, but she is now on holiday until Tuesday so I cannot talk to her..

Has anyone else been in a similar situation (especially at my age)?  How did they do the operation and what did they remove, just the cyst, the ovaries as well, or more?  How long did it take to get over it?

I would be very grateful for any information anyone can give me please?

Best wishes

Kathy

      Hi Julie

Yes - thanks for getting in touch.  It was fine.  Just a lot of hanging around, but the actual scan took about 15 Minutes.  Have you heard any more?

Thanks Taz.  Yes, ticked off list.  Now just appointment with consultant on Weds afternoon (hope I can understand him this time), then pre op and operation!  Hope it doesn't take too long to come round (although still a bit afraid - mostly because still don't know whether I have cancer or not and what they are going to do).

      Hi Taz

Do you know if there is any difference in recovery after a hysterectomy or just ovaries and fallopin tubes.  Does one take longer to recover from than the other and are there any side affects?

Unfortunatly a hysterectomy can take alot longer time to recover from however it does very much depend on the person. With me I am looking at the longer recovery time for the simpler op, but that is me. On the other hand a friend of mine recovered from a hysterectomy in less than half the time she was told it would take so recovery times are very subjective which is why I am loathe to quote them, however if you want timeframes I can certainly post them just let me know and I will give the figures.

The main side effect is that the surgical menopause is caused, this applies to both ops, but I presume you are already in the menopause or are post menopausal.

I will post a fuller list of possible side effects later, as in tomorrow, but am not at all well at the moment because of problems caused by the Epilepsy.I suffer. I can reassure you though that they are not generally serious and that most women wish they had had the surgery along time ago and find they have a new zest for life.

      Big hugs

      Hi Julie

Yes I know what you mean.  I'm scared too.  Part of me is frightened of the operation and part of me wants this thing gone asap.  I see the consultant again next Wednesday so he should have the results of my scan then and may be able to tell me more.

We'll get through this together, alongside the wonderful people on this site who are so supportive.

      Lots of love

      Kathy xx

No.  I had a cannula and they inserted blue dye into it.  I guess it does the same thing but not sure why they did that.  Your way sounds better!  Do you know when you will get your results?

There are several differant scans. One does involved drinking liquid as they need the bladder filled to make the other organs easier to see. Dye injection  is another sort, it is to do with checking how good the blood flow is and so that they can check if there are any unusual blood vessels that they need to be aware of before operating so that they are not cut by accident.

Dye will also be administered this way to check the fallopian tubes
