Worried about large ovarian cyst, possible cancer and operation

Posted , 9 users are following.

Hi Everyone

I am 60 and was diagnosed with a large ovarian cyst on Tuesday after a routine scan on my gallbladder.  The cyst is 8.7cm x 5.5cm approx 31/2 inches by 21/2 inches)  I had a CA125 blood test on Thursday afternoon because, although most of the cyst looks to be fluid, there is a solid part to it too (but don't know the result yet).  I am really worried about what is going to happen to me, whether it is cancer or not, but also how the operation will be done with such a big cyst.  Could they still do this with keyhole or will it need to be the bigger operation?

My doctor has referred me to the consultant as urgent to be seen within two weeks, but she is now on holiday until Tuesday so I cannot talk to her..

Has anyone else been in a similar situation (especially at my age)?  How did they do the operation and what did they remove, just the cyst, the ovaries as well, or more?  How long did it take to get over it?

I would be very grateful for any information anyone can give me please?

Best wishes

Kathy

My mum had op 2 weeks ago today. Some of you I have been chatting to and it has helped me so muchm just quickly updating... we have been ringing hospital for any news of a post op. Mum had some biopsy samples taken from her total hysterectomy and we have not heard a sibgke thing. Today, we spoke to a receptionist of the gynea/onc who has been working mums case. Apparently the biopsy results have arrived back TODAY but they haven't been checked. They have given mum an appointment date of 27th November (which is ages!!!) Esp if she needs chemo ir something after.

So mum said, "what if my cyst is cancerous and I won't know until a month away, will they move my appointment closer" and the receptionist replied "oh ermm didn't think of that...well your consaultant is going to Australia for a holiday so you wont be seen till later anyway. .."

    So badly organised! !!!!

The receptionist/mcmillen burse said they will look at my mums results and phone us either tomorrow or next week with results. ..how disgusting to be told over the phone. My mum has had nothing but bad luck throughout all of this. NHS for you lol.

So now we are sat at home scared to deatg every time our phone rings...waiting for news. Just awful sad

I'm so sorry Livi.  That really is a disgraceful way to treat your mum.  Sending hugs.

This is disgraceful and God forbid it comes back as cancer, but if it does demand to see someone ASAP. Your consultant being away is not an excuse, they have a team and are covered for when on leave.

Hi ladies I have some really sad news. My mum was diagnosed today with Stage 1c Ovarian cancer. She needs to have chemotherapy starting December. I feel so gutted and were all in shock. The cyst had cancer cells around the edge so the chemo will hopefully kill off any floating cells in her body. Fallopian tubes, womb, cervix, abdominal fat and nyph glands were all clear though.  I feel devastated,  and disgusted its taken hospital ages to deal with it xx

      Dear Livi

I'm so sorry your mum (and you) are having to go through this.  Hopefully, they will have caught it early though, so the chemotherapy should, as you say, kill off any floating cells and she will be OK.

Love and best wishes to you both.xx Kathy

I am so sorry to hear your sad news. Please cotact the Ovacome charity immediatly for the help and information you need at this time, they were set up specifically to help wwomen with ovarian cancer and their relatives.

Their helpline is 02072996650, I think all the nurses who man it have personal experience of ovarian cancer and the woman in charge, Ruth, is lovely.

    Hi,

Sorry too hear what you are going through, I'm new too this and came across your discussion.

In May this year I had a borderline ovarian cyst measuring 22cm and filled with 5 litres of fluid removed keyhole surgery I was very lucky I had a great surgeon willing too do it keyhole as I'm hoping I will still be able too conceive a baby, unfortunately I had too have my right ovary and fallopian tube removed which has resulted in being referred too fertility.

The recovery after surgery wasn't too bad but there is swelling and you will be tender, plenty rest after. It took pathology a few weeks too get back to me which was when I found out it was borderline, I have been recommended to have a hysterectomy if we are lucky enough too fall pregnant as we would be happy too have no more children after that, apparently if it happens too one ovary it may happen too the other, I have too have scans every 3 months too keep an eye on my left ovary, so far so good.

I wanted too share my experience with you, I know what an anxious time, try not worry and i wish you well for your surgery and a speedy recovery

Hi kj32.  It's very helpful to hear of your experience.  It must be such a worrying time for you and you are so young to go through this.

I am 60 and due to have a 9cm cyst and both ovaries and fallopian tubes removed next Friday 14 November, but have a throat infection at the moment so am praying it is better by then so that I can still have the op.  Can you tell me please, how large a cut did you have to have to remove your cyst?  How did you feel after the operation and how long did it take you to feel anywhere near normal again?  Did you stay in hospital over night?

      xx Kathy

    Hi Kathy,

I did have too stay overnight as they like too make sure you can urinate 3 times normally before going home, I made sure I kept drinking loads and I mean loads of water, jugs of it, as they will put a catheter in during your op, you don't need too get up to go to toilet over night.

I had 4 incisions made, one on either side of my stomach at 1cm, another one on my lower abdomen 3cm (where they would give you a c section) and one inside my belly button, when you wake up there is no pain but swelling, they will keep you topped up on pain relief, I got oral morphine and tramadol with paracetamol and ibuprofen so didn't feel pain, I stopped the morphine in the morning as it prevents you from going home tbh other than pain relief it makes you sleepy so can actually sleep in hospital too recover from the general.

When I got home I had discomfort more than pain, it's like trapped wind all around you abdomen, this I because at the start of surgery they use air too extend the stomach to give them room to move and to see what there doing, the best way too relieve this I would say try when you feel up to it go for short walks it helps to move the bagged up air left behind, it only lasts a day or two, then just take it easy and stick to the rules .........no heavy lifting or hoovering, really anything that will cause you to strain tummy muscles,I also went and bought antiseptic wipes to keep incisions clean I was scared of infection, I had disolvible stitches but the were irritating me kept catching my trousers so had what was left on the outside removed about 3 weeks later.

It took me about 6-8 weeks in honesty too feel more myself but I'd went through so much with it being 22cm I couldn't eat or breath as it was squishing my other organs, I lost alot of weight from being sick after eating, so your recovery may be quicker, unfortunately iv had more issues not relating to the op but still gynie, so still going through it but as of removal surgery it went well and recovery wasn't as bad as thought my fiancé has been a complete star looking after me, so make sure you have lots of support, I'm only 32 and never had any problems before so it's came as a complete shock too us, its been going on 9 months now but I keep just plodding on and try be positive. Since I found out iv stopped smoking (15years I'd smoked for) I know terrible, eating healthy and taking vitimans too and soon start exercising (docs orders not too just now) and I do feel alot better

I hope iv not rambled on too much and iv answered all your questions and not too detailed to add too your nerves and sorry your feeling unwell, try taking it easy, I understand it's a nerve wracking time  I felt the same but looking back, I wish I'd relaxed a bit I'm sure you are in great hands

    Best wishes

    Kira 😊

Thank you so much Kiara.  You haven't rambled on at all.  This has been really helpful to me and I will take on board your suggestions.  It's helpful to know about the morphine - that they won't let you home if you are still on it, and that you didn't have much pain.  Also the tip to drink loads.  It's also helpful to know about the incisions.

Can I ask, if you don't mind, did you find it difficult to go to the loo after your op and did you take any laxatives?  The walking is a good idea.  What did you do to stop the stitches catching on your trousers/underwear?  Did you use painkillers once home, and which ones?

I'm so sorry you are still suffering.  You are remarkable to stay so strong through it all, and well done for giving up smoking and changing to a healthier lifestyle.

I do hope that you will get sorted out as quickly as possible.  Your fiance sounds a real gem!

      Hi Kath,

Maybe your surgeon got a cancellation so could fit you in a day early, on the day of my op I was meant too go last out of 3 other ladies, so my family were surprised too get a call that I was out of surgery, hours before they expected, the wee lady before me had eaten something.

They send you home with painkillers and will give you a discharge letter my fiance took it too my gp and got a repeat prescription. Tbh the pain meds constipated me a bit but it took about 4 days too return normal, but I suffer from irritable bowel any way so might have been that,

Try not worry yourself sick you will need all your energy, x

Thanks kj32.  You are probably right - I rang back and they said it fitted in on the surgeon's list better if I came in a day earlier.  That poor lady who had eaten something - she must have been distraught when she couldn't go for her op, but good for you!

Yes, I know I must try not to worry.  It's just you don't know what they are going to find when they get in there - my cyst has a solid area. But I do just want to get this thing out of me! How long did it take you to feel normal afterwards, physically ie going for a walk?

Thank you so much for your reassurances.

      xx Kathy

Thanks Taz.  I appreciate that.  I'm so glad you have a doctor's appointment booked.

Just psyching myself up for tomorrow and the 4 Bisocodyl.  Have you any tips regarding this, and the pain I'm going to get (not sure if you have any experience of this)?

      xxxx Hugs

Never used them and do you mean pain related to them or the op? If them and they are a laxative, period type cramps at most I would have thought, you know the loo now feeling smile

To have got this far you are a strong woman and it is just another step on the road to better health.
