Worried about large ovarian cyst, possible cancer and operation

Hi Everyone

I am 60 and was diagnosed with a large ovarian cyst on Tuesday after a routine scan on my gallbladder.  The cyst is 8.7cm x 5.5cm approx 31/2 inches by 21/2 inches)  I had a CA125 blood test on Thursday afternoon because, although most of the cyst looks to be fluid, there is a solid part to it too (but don't know the result yet).  I am really worried about what is going to happen to me, whether it is cancer or not, but also how the operation will be done with such a big cyst.  Could they still do this with keyhole or will it need to be the bigger operation?

My doctor has referred me to the consultant as urgent to be seen within two weeks, but she is now on holiday until Tuesday so I cannot talk to her..

Has anyone else been in a similar situation (especially at my age)?  How did they do the operation and what did they remove, just the cyst, the ovaries as well, or more?  How long did it take to get over it?

I would be very grateful for any information anyone can give me please?

Best wishes

Kathy

I've had a phone call this morning asking me to go in a day earlier for my operation, ie this Thursday.  Now I'm panicking!  So much to do and I'm still trying to get rid of my throat infection.  The tablets don't finish until Friday morning (which I was told not to take).  I have rung the nurse and left a message for her to ring me, but so far, she hasn't rung me back.  I'm not sure if I'm pleased or not.

Stand back and take a deep breathe, you can't do their jobs for them. Think as little as possible about the infection and concentrate your energies and thoughts on getting ready.

      Hey Kathy,

Wow! That is unexpected. But think of the bright side: the sooner it's done, the sooner it will be over and your life will get back to normal.

      Hang in there, my friend!

Thanks Taz.  I was just worried my infection would come back because I'd have to stop the tablets a day early (10 day course) and the operation would make my throat very sore again, because of the tube.  No--one has actually mentioned what I should do about the throat infection re the operation if it's not better, even though the nurse at the pre-op appointment knows about it.

Oh well, I'm not inclined to cancel it because of my throat.  Just want it over and done with.

      Deep breath taken!  Thanks Taz.

PS  How are you feeling today?

      xx Kathy

Thanks Lorena.  Yes, I was in shock for a while.  Rushed round this morning packing my bag.  Have to go and buy the Bisacodyl this afternoon!  The consultant had, apparently looked at his list and though it would work better if I was in on Thursday.  I wonder if it's because they will keep me in over night and there are not so many staff on Saturday (plus I don't suppose he works Sats either).

How are you doing now Lorena?

I had a sore feeling on the right of my throat for a day or two but nothing to write home about as they say. It is more irritated than sore and not everyone gets it.

As to stopping your tablets a day early don't worry, a day rarely makes a difference.

As to the bleeding we spoke of earlier you cannot use tampons because of the risk of infection and the probable discomfort

    Howdy ladies:

I hope you are all doing well. I thought I'd give you a little update on myself.

As some of you know, I had my surgery to take out both ovaries last month and my recovery has been going well. The pain on my pelvis went completely away. Interestingly, about a week or so ago, the pain in my lower back (and flank) came back.  What tha??!  Next, came a pain in my left pelvis, just as it was before the surgery.  Now, here is the weird part: the pains are in exactly the same spots as it was before: the left size of my pelvis, lower back, and flank.  The pain in my back, which I thought was my left kidney, led my doctor to have me do a CT scan, which showed I had a cyst on my right ovary.  So, cyst on the right side of my body and pain on my left?  Odd!  The GYN explained that the ovaries have nerves spanning around the pelvis, and the cyst must have been sitting on some neve that affected the left organs. Makes sense.... I guess.

Anyway, now the darn pain is back, which to me means two things: 1) the original pains had nothing to do with the cyst. Regardless, I am glad they found it and that it is now gone.  2) I have to go back to my general physician to try to figure out from where these pains are coming.  Something else is going on, but the only thing the CT found was the cyst. No kidney stones or UT infections.  Everything else looked clean.

So, the "fun" in cracking this Sherlockian puzzle continues. (sigh!)

    Take care, y'all!

Just rung the hospital and I have to be in the day surgery unit for 7.15am tomorrow.  That's such good news.  The man I spoke to said I should be one of the first to go down if I am going in at that time.

I expect I'll have to stay in overnight - I was told 24 hours - but going in at that time, who knows!

    Please think of me tomorrow.

      Hi Kathy,

I'll be thinking of you and sending you lots of hugs through the airways. Also, I want to share something John Muir, one of our greatest naturalists, wrote back in the early 1900s. Whenever I am worried or scared, I think of this poem and suddenly I feel warm and at peace and sure that everything will turn out all right.  And, amazingly, it always does.

"Climb a mountain and feel the good tiddings.

Nature's peace will flow into you, as the sunshine flows into trees.

The winds will blow their freshness into you, and the storms their energy,

and all your worries will drop off like autumn leaves."

Once you have a chance to rest and recover, please let us know how things went and how you're feeling.  We'll be thinking of you.

Great news Julie, really happy for you. Huge sigh of relief now. Im glad they are being very thorough with you. Mum has her first appointment with the Oncology team on Monday. Very anxious but hopefully we will get some answers. We went to see our GP and she read off the pathology report aloud and it seems Mum has an early stage cancer (1C). Just hoping there is nothing anywhere else as months ago mum had a CT scan and MRI and we still dont know the results. Im hoping if the pathology report said stage 1C they should hopefully be certain of that. I guess we can never be sure! I dont trust any medical teams or Doctors at the moment due to Mums whole experience an how delayed and overly relaxed the consaultants have been. I will have to sadly join a new forum now with Mamillan (which i regret to say). Thank you for all of your suport ladies. I wish you all the best and good health! xxx
